Whenever my bf and I are out to eat I ALWAYS tip a lot. Servers deal with a lot of stupid shit, people who think they're entitled to be little shits (also see: people who think it's the server's fault the cook made your meal incorrectly), AND are disgustingly underpaid, so it's the least I can do.

I've pretty much made 20% my norm and I'm not Mr. Money bags. I realize how badly waiters and pizza delivery people are getting screwed.

If I can't afford a tip, I don't go out or order in. Simple as that.

Nah. Though it is my standard for above average service. I'll go higher if it's phenomenal.

But I'll also only leave a penny faced down if the service is bad. This whole idea of leaving something even if the service is poor is for the birds.

That doesn't apply here.

Serving is a tip-based occupation. If you do poorly, your tips will reflect.

It's not black and white though. I always take into consideration how busy the restaurant is compared to the staff on hand. I also recognize effort.

But I take no issue stiffing a server who is rude or clearly does not care about doing a good job.

How does it not apply? You're an employee of the restaurant or establishment. It's not the same as sitting on the corner and spanging/busking, or offering to shine shoes outside of a high rise building.

I usually start at 20-30% and just deduct a bit if the service isn't up to my standard. Lately, service in general has gotten very poor at most places, but the restaurants have gotten insanely busy as well. Although, there are several places I go where I'm known enough to get the best service and I generally tip like 70-100% there because I love having that waiter and I want to always get the same one whenever I go. One waiter in particular is not just serving, but helping to make a night out a memorable experience, and I feel like money isn't even an apt enough expression of the gratitude I feel toward them.

I don't think its a standard but I do think people shouldn't be total dicks. Just this week alone, I've dealt with entitled people who want everything then and there. When I have several tables to run and I work in a "quick service" industry, its rough when people don't care if we're understaffed and you could see the sweat on my face from how fast I have to move to get things done.

I believe that tipping by percentage is a stupid system. Why does the person in a more expensive restaurant deserve more of a tip? If I go to Denny's with a group of 4 and we all get drinks and our bill comes out to $50, is our waitress deserving of one quarter of the tip she would get at a fancy restaurant where our bill is $200?

Your purchases should have tax included, and servers should be paid the minimum wage instead of being expected to live on tips.

How many servers are actually being paid the minimum wage after all that hubbub a few years ago? It wouldn't surprise me if there were still places that paid servers $4 an hour.

Yes? What else do you want them to do? There's a bit of conversation in there, but I don't need a big song and dance routine to keep them from being a bad server. I got my drinks, I got my food, I'm happy.

I tip 20% and that was considered generous back in the day. I also worked as a dishwasher and worked my way up as a cook. Now I hate tipping with a passion. People will go on and on about how bad servers have it, but ask any server if they want to switch to dishwashing or prepping food. They'll turn tail and bail out so hard.

From my experiance bad tippers are usually poor people.

When I worked in nicer places I usually felt bad for them. They're obviously way out of their price range and really just shouldnt have been there.

I dont mean that in an elitist way. But if the price of dinner stresses you out it's not worth it. Imo at least. I've been there

My problem with tipping is that, at the places I worked at, they don't split the tips. They do a great job with the service and get tipped? That's fine. I do an exceptional job with the meal and have the people saying "Wow!"? They get tipped. So what happens is for the "special of the day", we phone it in and experiment on the staff to make the actually really good meals and concoctions. One time I made a nachos and cheese mix to share around and I had a server ask me one time why I didn't make it a special. I looked at my coworker and we laughed at her. Rule of thumb for cooking: if they're not paying for the knowledge, keep it in your head. No need to make your master richer.

Really, they should raise the prices and do away with tipping. Just felt like venting a bit.
