If he winds up being forced into an ordinary life, with an ordinary job (probably unskilled or semi-skilled), with an ordinary social circle because anyone remotely geeky won't go near him? I mean, it still won't quite do. But if it absolutely has to? Someone like him will suffer plenty there. He'll suffer in ways that it would be illegal to subject him to in prison. All the worse because it won't look like suffering to literally anyone else: it's all of his own making, himself to himself, and there is nothing he can do to stop it. I could almost live with that.
