| Lopen 04/03/24 2:51:19 PM #53 | I think his presence and character work elevated a career with a lot of meh ring work and promos, and some standout matches to firmly "good" even if yeah he had a lot of bad stuff there (even though I'd say most of the truly bad stuff was before the attitude era)
I think it's all under the same umbrella though. Taker having a compelling character MADE matches and promos better. I think it's dumbing down wrestling as an artform to just try and isolate the character from these things entirely. Now if you hated the character it becomes harder to say this guy was good in the ring or on the mic but at that point you're not really trying to be objective about it and it's just your preferences. The character was legendary and his performance at it was legendary. Which I mean you can absolutely say no in spite of this, this topic series has nothing to do with being objective. I'm just taking umbrage with him being called "bad in the ring"-- he probably shouldn't really be considered that by any objective measure that is taking the total package into play. --- No problem! | Lopen 04/03/24 10:08:33 AM #50 | Yeah I dunno. Maybe the IWC has changed a lot since I paid attention to it (I frequented wrestling forums in the 2000s) but imo that would be a "hot take" and certainly not one I'd agree with.
But to each their own-- I personally can't stand to watch like 95% of Triple H matches (we probably share common ground in thinking his mania matches with Taker are garbage-- I actually preferred their first mania match in the early 00s to his hyped ones) and a lot of people say he's good too. --- No problem! I'm not saying Undertaker was an amazing promo and his material was often garbage, but he did what he needed to to bring hype for his character and the match/feud. Like I definitely think it's the type of character that can just devolve into long winded pointless babble ala Bray Wyatt but Undertaker generally didn't do that and would just talk about souls and shit and how the other guy was gonna rest in peace and be on his way. I'm not going to go find Undertaker promos on YouTube to watch but in the context of the show it was effective and never made me want to change the channel. Like he's nowhere near my favorite but this "he's a bad wrestler and/or a bad promo" stuff is completely alien to me. Not even normal workrate snob smarks think that generally-- this is a very bold proclamation. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |

Edgeworth interacting with the spiritual stuff salvages it quite a bit for me, but I do think the heavy focus on that stuff is what keeps this case from being anywhere near 2-4 quality for me. (And also prefer 1-5) --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |

I mean I don't agree he generally had bad matches after like 1995 or so, particularly not enough to be considered the poster child of them. I also love dumb hokey stuff and question why people who are staunchly against it would be into pro wrestling to begin with (and no it's not just a WWE thing WWE just has more of it) so obviously I don't care about that aspect. I still had fun and honestly had no intention to attack Chris for a bad game until he started attacking me first Chris being better equipped to solve the game is meaningless given he was the main mislynch on the board for good reason he led like 2 mislynches and shot a guy he thought was town and blamed one of his mislynches for it Yes he had a better idea of who the scum were. Being able to remove yourself from the POE when you played a super scummy game is actually helpful for solving So yes I'd vote him again. This isn't me being stubborn this is me saying there was no reason to townread him and if town is going to play like that I'm going to be wrong a lot. And so will other town. The only reason Chris had difficulty getting votes is 3/6 living people were scum. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
