We did this one fairly recently

And now that I've seen what Gilgamesh Island entails, I'm not sure I want to take the time to do all this either! Based on what I'm reading here, it looks like I'd need to grind levels quite a bit to even have a chance at completing all this because it's apparently still hard even at max levels.

Man, I was kinda looking forward to seeing how it ended. Guess there's always YouTube! Maybe it's time to move toward the end of the game now, after all.

Okay, I'm basically done with Chapter 12 of Rebirth.

The Yuffie date was better than I expected, although I'm disappointed that Cloud didn't respond with "...Something" when Yuffie asks him to say something like in the original. Also, I appreciated them showing Cid falling asleep during Loveless. Great callback to a random conversation you can have with him in the original game. I did enjoy the Rufus fight, but I gotta say, I'm beginning to feel that this game has too many boss fights, arena/simulation battles, etc.

Also I guess they decided to make Cait Sith a bit more sympathetic by not having him kidnap Marlene and Elmyra this time. I'm kinda surprised the party is all, "Cait Sith knows the way to the temple," and they don't...just make him take them there. I guess they don't trust him to actually get them there, which is understandable, I suppose. Also they have him leave the party entirely, leaving his gear behind and everything, too. I guess they could do it differently this time around, but they need him to get the Black Materia, so I assume he'll rejoin the party by the end. Maybe they'll wait until Part 3 this time around though.

Arguments for Smash should be focused on how Smash by itself changed the landscape, because that's what it can relyon.

I think the fact that Smash is the poster child for "often imitated, never duplicated" in this genre (and perhaps in gaming in general) is enough to warrant its place here. I just disagree that it didn't influence anything else other than its knockoffs.

Wait so Knuckles is only onscreen for like 10% of the show or something?

I mean he was in a lot of the first episode but they're definitely making the story a lot about the humans and Knuckles is just kinda along for the ride, or so it seems after one episode

just have Trucy study magic at the distinguished Khura'in School of Magic to reunite her with Apollo for the epic case or something (or just have Apollo visit on a break from Khura'in, whichever)

Actually, maybe the best way to do it would have been to do both of Phoenix's cases back to back. You get a good first impression of Nahyuta because he actually beats Phoenix in his first appearance, and you lay the foundation for Apollo vs. Nahyuta in this case.

also changing the case order maybe lets Phoenix get home in time to see Trucy's show

just compare what 3-4 does for Godot with 6-4 for Nahyuta

the fact that it's a trial-only case isn't an issue because 3-4 does a ton to advance Godot's character

I think Spirit of Justice's plot did a lot of things right structurally. Having Phoenix be boots on the ground in Khura'in first is a good use of the character, and letting Apollo take the lead in the finale is the right call, too. I also think it's why they needed to have Apollo stay at the end because three playable characters isn't a tenable situation for the series. Needing Athena to take the lead for 6-4 instead of having another Apollo/Nahyuta case to advance their story is a problem there's no easy answer for with three protagonists.

I also think having Phoenix punk Nahyuta on his home turf in the opening case of the game when he barely knows what he's doing in their court system would've taken a lot of bite out of the character.

All right, I am basically done with Chapter 11 in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth!

So Nibelheim was repurposed into a "mako poisoning treatment center," huh. It's interesting that they don't just try to pretend they're residents who've lived there for years like the original game. Also, they're really trying to get me to invest in this Wutai storyline with Glen Lodbrok, and I just ain't there yet. I suppose it might hit differently if you actually played Ever Crisis.

Anyway, exploring Shinra Manor was pretty good. Controlling Cait Sith felt a little clunky at times, but it was a nice change of pace, at least. I like making Yin and Yang into a mini-boss fight, and I'm glad they kept Lost Number (or whatever they called it in this game. Forgotten Experiment or something boring) in as a boss fight, too.

I wonder how Vincent responds if you tell him your foe is Shinra or Wutai. I figured the "right" answer was Sephiroth, but I'd be curious to know how the dialogue changes with the other two. I like how they made Vincent's first Limit Break into a boss fight. That was pretty fun. He didn't leave with us though, so I wonder what brings us back around to have him "join" the party (although I already know he's not playable). I guess they did this to have him join really late to justify him not being playable, like with Red XIII in Remake.

Cid finally has some storyline significance here by telling us that he knew Ifalna, and he met Aerith when she was really young. I guess Aerith must look a lot like her mom if Cid could recognize her! He offers to fly us to Gold Saucer for free so we can find the Keystone in order to enter the Temple of the Ancients. Oh right, I did like the pained expression on Reeve's face during the Shinra meeting when they show the Cait Sith camera. Nice touch.

Darklaw was absolutely trying to prosecute Espella for the murder of the Storyteller (and in the overarching plot, being the cause of the Legendary Fire)

Layton comes in for the final...maybe 20% of the case? And the Storyteller is maybe there for the final 10% of it. As Bitto said, this is a really long case. In fact, counting the "investigation" segment after the trial segment of L-3 ends, it takes up almost half the game.

She doesn't get arrested in T&T, but she does get accused of killing her mother by Dahlia in 3-5, so I guess the streak could be getting accused of murder instead...!

I doubt anyone's trading up for Harrison and the top 3 will almost certainly draft QBs if they stay where they are, so you should be good on that count

PS1 vs. N64 wasn't close. The PS1 sold around 100 million and the N64 sold around 30-35 million.

I did appreciate the progress you saw in the animations starting with this case. Showing Maya holding the pipe was something cool you didn't see in previous games.

Hot take time: Most of PW1's soundtrack isn't very good (it's got a few very memorable tracks, don't get me wrong), so hearing remixes of them doesn't do much for me.

I doubt anyone voting for the Wii is doing it out of favoritism though.

Yes, the N64 is a very top heavy console, but you have to ignore a lot of its negatives to include it on a Rushmore. If you want to include a Nintendo console for its library, just pick the SNES.

Okay, I am basically done with Rebirth Chapter 10, aside from cleaning up World Intel stuff.

As I mentioned before, this depiction of Cosmo Canyon was practically perfect. It looked super good and had the right atmosphere, in addition to the banger remix of the town theme.

I liked how they portrayed Bugenhagen here. He's still mostly the wise old sage, but the mask drops a couple of times, and you can see his frustration and hopelessness at the Planet's situation. I thought it was interesting that he basically said it was impossible that we saw Weapons, but he never really elaborates on why he thinks that.

The Cave of the Gi was pretty good. It would've been nice if you could've chosen Red XIII's partner instead of it having to be Barret, but he was a pretty good choice if it had to just be one party member. I loved him putting on his sunglasses to cover up his tears when he sees Red XIII's interaction with Seto.

Then we got two big detours back to back. As Gi Nattak is ferrying us over to the Gi Village, we get another Zack scene, and it's the wildest one yet. Zack and Biggs both say that right before their deaths, they saw a wind and next thing they knew, they were somewhere completely different and alive. On top of that, their memories don't match because (I assume) they were saved at different points in time. Biggs has memories of Mercenary Cloud, but Zack is still taking care of comatose Cloud, who hasn't awoken to that persona yet. Zack believes Aerith was the one who saved them, but I agree with Biggs when he asks, "Why me?" It's an interesting choice to save him out of all the members of Avalanche.

Back to the Gi Village, they explain that they're cursed to be wandering spirits who can never return to the Lifestream because they weren't created by it. So where did they come from then? Are they offshoots of Jenova or something? Regardless, they wanted to find a way to end their existence, and that's how the Black Materia came into existence. However, Gi Nattak claimed the Cetra stole it from them before they could use it, and he asks us to get it back for him. Well, I guess if Meteor destroyed the Planet, that would do the trick and get rid of the Gi, too.

Cait Sith thinks he might know where the Black Materia is when Gi Nattak said it was located at a place of Cetra worship. I guess Shinra already found it, so if he can find access to a Shinra terminal, he could verify it for sure. Unfortunately, Bugenhagen repurposed Cosmo Canyon's into a windmill! When a black robed guy shows up at the front gate muttering about Nibelheim, Cait Sith is sure there's a terminal there. Nobody knows how to bring up that Nibelheim shouldn't exist anymore, but we're headed there anyway!

It does feel longer than that, but it moves at a pretty fast pace. They cram in a lot of stuff into a small window of time.
