Also, one last fun tidbit: do you like Isaac Asimov? Because Shinjuku is based on one of his works. Every EoR is built out of a crossover between two literary properties with a secret third property forming the hidden core of the story. It's an insanely cool concept and they do a lot with it.

#1 is Starcraft 1 and it's not even a little bit close. Partly because the game might legitimately be the best esport of all time, but also because it has the best casters with like, decades of synergy together and they know how to make even a total newbie grasp how the game functions.

#2 onwards is trickier. I kinda wanna say either Marvel 2 or a King of Fighters entry? Both are absolute hype machines and always get massive reactions from any crowd, and they're on exact opposite ends of the 'wtf is going on' spectrum -- Marvel 2 is such a mad scramble that the sheer insanity takes over, KoF is so clear about what's going on that you can track it easily even if you don't know a single thing about it.

I'm just trying to figure out what my character's motivation is. Am I trying to save the monsters from the humans? Is there an evil plot that I haven't seen yet? Or is the story basically, "the friends we made along the way?"

Nor people who put focus into gameplay over narrative, since it's such a mechanically simple game

I couldn't disagree with this more strongly

Undertale is a ludic masterpiece. It's one of its strongest aspects, in fact -- the intermixing of gameplay and story is what makes it such a memorable experience and without it it'd land a lot less hard. There's a reason tons of 'boss fight' mods exist for it too, like for example Undertale RED. It holds your hand a lot early on and if you stay on the 'correct' path, but the deeper into it you go the less true this is. That one fight (you know which) made like ten hours of my life vanish in a flash and I can't say that a game that did that has weak gameplay.

She talks about how good the story is, but I haven't really seen much in regards to story as of yet (just got to a snow town). All I know is I'm some kind of kid that fell into a hole and wants to go home or something, lol.

Out of curiosity, you wouldn't call, say, exploring Toriel's house story? Like, finding out what kind of person she is, what her hobbies are, why she's so nice to you and so on? To me, that's what Undertale's story is about. It's in taking time to stop, explore your environs, and learn about everyone around you. This includes your 'enemies' in the random encounters, by the way.

Or maybe people should stop telling him to shut up? It is clearly not actually going to make him shut up. It hasn't until now. Making those posts is not some selfless thing about helping LMS, it's a selfish release of frustration.

I'd say when it's multiple people repeatedly attacking a single guy who hasn't actually made any personal attacks themselves, bullying is a fair assessment. Even when they have, it could be considered that (see ertyu).

This is a bad take

Telling people their actions are unwanted is how you get them to stop (or, well, you punch the daylights out of them if they don't take the hint/escalate legally/whatever else is the next step from 'stop'). If gamefaqs modding policy was sensible there would be a 'report for inappropriate content' option and we'd just use that en masse, but we don't have that so telling him 'you're stupid, shut up' is what we got.

it might be Mario Party -- huge series of its own, plus other party games like Fusion Frenzy and Fall Guys fit this vein from after the original Party-trilogy. Did these kinds of multiplayer minigame-collections exist much before 1999? Even other Nintendo variations like Remix and WarioWare.

This is actually a really good question and I have no answer to it. Mario Party 1 might honestly be the game that proved 'hey, minigames!' was a real gaming genre. If so, it would be the really obvious inclusion for the fourth slot, but I'm not sure the genre wasn't established before it. Likewise, SMRPG is credited as 'the first RPG that actually sold in the west' but the existence of Final Fantasy 4 (and 1, even) makes me wonder if that was actually true. Mario history is gaming history to such a degree that I would kill for a gaming historian's takes on this, actually.

It just kind of feels like the trilogy owes at least as much to other sci-fi and action movies of the '80s and '90s as it does to the previous six movies if not more. Doesn't help that Abrams directed Super 8 (a bigtime homage to Spielberg's past work) and that the screenwriter of Raiders of the Lost Ark has a co-writing credit on The Force Awakens (when his only previous brush with Star Wars was a screenplay credit on Empire Strikes Back).

Can you like, name a specific work that influences the sequel trilogy's feel at all

Because I frankly don't agree with this. I can't recall a single non-arthouse 80s or 90s movie (and I would bet all the money in the world that arthouse anything did not enter the discussion for it) that does the 'spend 30 minutes following people with no names whom you know little about' thing that The Force Awakens does, for example. I feel this is more having a pet hypothesis and wanting to force it than something substantiated. Open to being convinced with examples tho.

We didn't say FF was dead during the wait for FFXV

I'd only say something is dead if there's no hope for a new title, and 2-D Mario didn't fit that bill

The franchise was absolutely buried until 7R dropped tho, as a referential entity in the RPG world. It wasn't dead in terms of new games (a better comparison here would be megaman, tbqh), but it was completely destroyed critically by the one-two punch of FF13 and FF15 until XIV Shadowbringers and 7R dropped to prove that Final Fantasy had found its groove again.

Anyway, I'm convinced. Restating my previous two picks with the new ones for clarity...

SMB1
SMB64
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Feels right I think.

SMB1
SM64

First two are easy. Last two, not so much. SMB1 saved gaming, and it should really be an unanimous inclusion as a simple measure of respect for the most important game of all time. SM64 changed gaming, and while it's ok if not everyone has it in their lists, it just makes sense in the same way the first iconic coloured film should prolly be on a movies Rushmore. After that it gets difficult. SMB3 was huge, SMW was huge, but like...all Mario games are huge. The two SMB2 combined sold over 10 million copies without ever being pack-in games (which unambiguously helped SMB3 sell 18m). Sales, I think, are not enough when evaluating which Marios deserve to get the nod over others. I feel like, more than any other videogame series, Mario games have to be evaluated by their impact on other games, and not just their own franchise. Given that, I kinda lean away from SMB3 and SMW. Can anyone say that they really changed the course of platformers in a way SMB1 didn't? So the question is...what Mario games had the most outsized impact? My gut says there should be one rep for 'casual' or 'party' gaming, which means either a Mario Kart or a Mario Party game, but the last slot is difficult to settle on. What do you guys think is the third most game-changing Mario game after 1 and 64?

Lowkey one of my favorite FGO things I ever did was help set this up.

Also: STRONG recommendation for reading FGO Turas Realta. It's one of the two Arc 1 manga adaptations (it's the one featuring male Fujimaru) and unlike the other one which entered dev hell, it has kept going at a steady pace and is currently on Babylonia. As far as I'm concerned, Turas Fujimaru is very much the canon version of the character -- a much more complex character than the one we get to play as, but still demonstrably the same guy.

The first three should be pretty straightforward, but I want to go to bat for the last one because I think it's important. Sonic was a joke for the better part of two decades. You know when people actually realized the franchise actually might have found its groove again outside 'just make yet another 2d sonic that's similar to the Genesis ones'? When they reached Giganto or watched a vid of someone playing against it and saw a Super Sonic fight that was more than just 'bonk dude in the head three times to win'. A huge part of making that work was using a type of music the series has never really tried before. It's also an independently popular song that's gotten significant amounts of play in memes and other such things. It's a very recent entry but it feels right, IMO.

I mean I guess like

"Has enough basic detail and depth to be considered a world" is technically a "more detailed world"

Very detailed games existed in the first and second generations, just not graphically. Colossal Cave is from 1976 for example, only four years after Pong. It's hard to say exactly what divides 'actual, real game' games from the first generation from the ones in the second in terms of depth, but they did exist. It was just a hard tradeoff between graphics and gameplay depth is all.

Also some of you don't really appreciate how much more recognizable DC characters in general were over Marvel before the MCU.

This is true and important (Spiderman exempted)

I think there's a genuine argument for having an S tier of recognition for Superman, Batman and Spidey because those three completely dominate any other comic characters in recognizability. Set those aside and I think 'who's an A-lister comics character?' makes a lot more sense. At that point your A-list is like, Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hulk, etc. and Iron Man is a tier below those.

Scorching hot take: Cardgames are better when the resource you fight over is literal board positioning over mana. The game Duelyst died because of mismanagement, but its idea of grid-based combat was a brilliant way of controlling ramp in a consistent resource environment by limiting the amount of ways an opponent could leverage it with smart positioning.

I don't think any selection for FF makes any sense without the first two (and the victory fanfare, but that's too short to be a full song unto itself). They're the most immediately recognizable tracks the series has. OWA is a step below that, representing the post-SNES period, and Answers reps the game with which FF began to swing back into prominence after hitting its slump. Seems about right to me.

People have been increasingly lenient on it as time passes.

'Lenient on it' does not mean 'is someone's fave'

People have warmed up to Terminator 3 because the followups to it were Terminator Salvation (an unmitigated disaster that did nothing right), Terminator Genisys (a divisive movie due to making a beloved character into the main antagonist, and also fielding two leads who had little chemistry with each other), and Terminator Dark Fate (a very messy movie that did not live up to the hype generated around it). It's easy to warm up to a technically competent movie that makes an absolute hash of the universe lore when the followups also do that but they are less complete and well-done products! This does not mean that literally anyone takes it over Terminator 1 or Terminator 2: Judgement Day (or hell, Terminator: Resistance if they count expanded universe media, as it's pretty much the real Terminator 3 that everyone wanted)

I don't understand how the sequel trilogy gets raked over the coals for featuring a "happy ending override" and then re-hashing the plot of the original trilogy, but older movies that are guilty of not much different like Ghostbusters II and Terminator 3 have become varying degrees of nostalgic favorite. Only thing that makes sense is they care mostly about the overarching story of Star Wars, so they don't care about comparing it to those past movies.

Terminator 3 is no one's nostalgic favorite
