The highest efficiency we've had is 72.7% in VGMC14 (granted, the efficiency % can't explain the rush to get everything locked in VGMC16--and if it weren't for the locks, we would have seen an efficiency much higher than 61.3%). I guess if you took the 8.79 noms and reduced the efficiency to 72.7%, it would suggest....6.39 noms for a song to qualify? (assuming my calculations are correct)

Whoops! The nom efficiency in VGMC14 was 58.5%. (58.5% of ALL noms, but 72.7% of USED noms) That would suggest 5.14 noms to qualify, not 6.39. So, six noms for locking may not be so low, after all, even after accounting for increased efficiency. If I were in charge I think I'd go with seven noms to lock a song, not eight....

Clarification: that's the % of used noms going toward songs that made the cut. If you divide by all noms it's more like 58%.

I agree, in a nutshell. I think locking nominations should come at a price. That way the music that doesn't lock can get in with fewer noms--a benefit for songs having no security. That way people would hesitate on whether it's actually worth it to lock a song.

If we have, say, 90 nominators (hopefully this is an overestimate) who each have 25 noms, then assuming every available nom gets used and with absolute max efficiency (meaning every nom is used on the 256 qualifiying songs), that's an average of 8.79 noms per qualifying song. Of course, we're not going to be perfectly efficient, and 85.2% is the highest nom usage % we've had. If we assume 90% of noms are used with perfect efficiency considering that (which means 90% efficiency for ALL available), that drops us to about 7.91 noms per qualifying song.

Keeping in mind my suggestion that locking should come at a price, 8 noms to lock sounds good to me! Of course, that may mean it will only take 5 or 6 noms to qualify without locking, but that's how I would like it!

I mean, I wish we could have the ideal setting of being able to lock music fairly easily--it's nice to get something in easily AND secured. This worked in VGMC 14 and 15. But with the large amount of music getting nominated and with nomination efficiency improving every year (plus with people rushing to lock things more and more), it is unfortunately not possible anymore, unless we want a mad rush of noms to lock music like last contest (OR if we had more than 256 songs in the tournament...)

Pursuit ~ Cornered isn't very good music. Likewise with most other pursuit themes in the series. The only one that's great is Pursuit ~ Wanting to Find the Truth, and even then, it's not amazing. Just great.

2-3 has a fantastic villain and fantastic concluding day 2 trial (even if the rest of the case is "meh").

I am with Leonhart on Dual Destinies being the most consistently good Ace Attorney game in the series. Even 5-2 is great.

GAA1 is the worst game in the series (but not bad still!), while GAA2 is about average in the pecking order, I'd say. What hurts GAA2 the most (I feel) is that the main villains are forgettable in the final case. The final case still has some really cool stuff going on leading up to the climax (and there's a good twist), though. The second and third cases are fantastic for non-final cases, too.

Hey, a match I can vote in! Except I can't decide which one... I like Smash more than MK in general, but MKDS is my second favorite MK, while Brawl is beat out by all except the first Smash. What breaks the tie is the one with the more fun single-player mode.

Good topic! We don't agree on music all that much, but I admire your time, effort, and fun presentation! Very well done. Having two tracks get a perfect ten was a definite surprise! Last topic I got maybe one in the 80+ range and that was it, I think.

Holy Wilds is one of my favorites from Opoona. You mentioned low tones. I totally agree with that. The full sound really fills out with the majestic, mystical feeling it evokes. The perfect score you gave for it would have been a powerful motivator for me to get it into the next VGMC. The problem is that, well, it was rolled in BOST6, and it got nearly doubled by Small Two of Pieces. >.< I will nominate some other Opoona track next VGMC...

Interesting to see the March movement of First Suite in Eb nearly get first place, meanwhile the other movements only got between 50 and 60 points! But the march movement is my favorite, too. Marches tend to be shallow in terms of design. The music is just... there. This piece is different... I guess being part of a suite means it has to be more than that by necessity. But yeah, the way the two contrasting themes get combined and build towards the climax is totally epic. And I love the energy the ornaments give at....dang it. Did I give you the North Texas recording rather than Eastman? I love the stronger brass in that version, even though it is less clean, admittedly. I haven't listened to most of the music in this topic, but I really do enjoy These Hallowed Wings. That one's a keeper, for sure.

SMB3 seems better (in terms of level design and power-ups), but SMW gives me better feelings. Actually, one advantage SMW has is "secrets", which is quite a big deal. And Yoshi is a big deal, too, even if he kind of breaks the game. SMW, it is.

I love End of the Raging Waves, but not quite as much as the EO5 version. I also get the feeling that if I discovered the EO3 version today (without having heard any other versions), I wouldn't think it's that great. That's because my tastes have changed since discovering the EO3+EO5 versions... I mean, I'm sure you guys know how if you love a song for a long time, then your tastes shift against that kind of music, you often still love that song, anyway. Corridors of Time used to be my favorite CT track, but now it's likely not in my top ten from it. It's still great, though! (it's so magically evocative!) But the other is so dang epic.

Secret of the Forest has blossomed for me as of late. I'm very happy it retired. All of it is great, but it's the piano at the end that always gets me! Vengeful God has a fantastic atmosphere (plus the FM sound is really "cool"), but it doesn't take you very many places, so I get board kind of quickly. But okay, there a a cool chord change that I can't ignore (I love the chromatic shift between the chord at 0:09 and the chord at 0:13). But it goes through the same four chords the ENTIRE loop, which causes me to get bored with it. I feel like it has wasted potential.

My favorite CT track keeps changing, from Corridors of Time to Boss Battle 1 to Tyrano's Lair, but this one is my current favorite... maybe? I sure love the foreboding atmosphere... I may like Tyrano's Lair more still, though. Their Own Brand of Justice is apparently another battle theme that I didn't know about until this contest (I don't think). Maybe it's objectively no worse than End of the Raging Waves, but because my tastes are not what they used to be, this one gets the shaft, unfortunately. But this has no powerful surprise chord change at the climactic moment like End of the Raging Waves does...
