I got 3 cards yesterday for 1.50. Base set Magmar, Neo Genesis Lanturn, and Neo Discovery Hoppip. Nothing rare, but they're new to me.

Every day Bamco doesn't release Tekken Bowling as a standalone game is a day they leave money on the table. There was an app, but even that was free!

Pentamagic Trick (Quan Chi)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdA4pmr_gFc
Either that glass is reinforced to stop it from breaking on impact, or Quan Chi was dropping very carefully, hard enough to slice up his opponent, but not so hard as to make the glass break. Slicing into six pieces isnt something weve seen before, and the best part is when the fleshy ribbons fall once Quan Chi removes the glass. However, this is very quick and restrained for an MK1 fatality for a playable character. Even some of the kameos are more elaborate than this.
Rough placement: Number 359

Final Offering (Quan Chi)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKoqsT30JEI
Quan Chis first fatality may have been a little underwhelming by MK1 standards, but this one more than makes up for it. This is essentially a combination of his MK9 X-ray (the neck snap is reused wholesale from that, though it is of course deadly here) and the hypnosis fatality from MKX. The thought of a person being made to end their own life while under hypnosis is terrifying enough in MKX when they didnt react much to their pain. This time, its even worse as theyre screaming while mutilating themselves, as if suffering such pain is threatening to break the hypnosis, but they arent able to resist for long enough.
Rough placement: Number 3

Fantasize (Khameleon)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HkyLCsKhfQ
Khameleons gimmick is that she uses the moves from various other female ninjas (in this game, she uses moves from Kitana, Mileena and Jade). However, only two of the ninjas appear in her fatality. The lack of a move from Jade in the fatality is very disappointing. Maybe she could have used Jades staff to pole vault up and shoot the head with Mileenas sai? That said, what is here is at least pretty decent. Kitana has had beheading fatalities in the older games, and this continues that tradition, while adding more onto it. Finally, allow me to extend a warm-hearted congratulations to Khameleon for finally graduating from the No-Fatality Losers Club! Suck it, Chameleon!
Rough placement: Number 343

Now for the DLC characters. I'll start with the first character and kameo pair today, with the next pair to follow tomorrow. As these aren't an official part of the ranking, they're getting an unofficial rough placement at the end of each entry.

Trained Killer (Omni Man)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL-vdFF8B4c
Omni Man just went up to Leatherface and said You dont seem to understand. The best guest fatality isnt yours to conquer. The only thing I know about Omni Man are some of the memes (Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power is my favourite, although Think, think! grew on me after this game made him say it and do the pose when he wins a round), so I assume his fatalities reference things he does in the show. This one is unique in that, although it doesnt cause a whole lot of damage to the opponent until the end, there is a lot of collateral damage from the other passengers on the train all crashing into them. This fatality gives you a good insight into (what I imagine to be) Omni Mans personality, that hes all-powerful but also arrogant, and makes no attempt to minimize civilian casualties in his battles.
Rough placement: Number 20

Like Putty (Omni Man)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG_vreeVhq0
Did the Viltrum Empire have access to Game of Thrones, or did Omni Man watch it after he came to Earth? Either way, he one-ups the Mountain with this head squash. Not only does he squeeze until an eye pops out like the Mountain did, he then uses the head as a weapon to destroy the rest of the body. The stomp is the last bit of dominance Omni Man needed, to show just how insignificant his opponent is to him. Speaking of the Mountain, remember that time the High Sparrows men picked a fight with him, and he ripped that one dudes spine out with his bare hands? That was wild. He could have had a shot at being a guest character back in MK11, but hes missed his chance now that Game of Thrones is over and its popularity has tanked.
Rough placement: Number 82

Disembowling Ball (Tremor)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wve43itUMNs
Tremor is one of the kameo characters to get a new fatality, even though he already had ones to work with. Maybe they were too elaborate to recreate for a kameo? Anyway, this one isnt bad at all despite its simplicity. The boulder growing larger as it rolls towards the opponent is fun, as it absorbs rocks from the earth like a deadly Katamari. The squashed opponent also looks really pulped and messy after being squashed, which gets across how much that boulder was weighing down on them while it rolled over them. Fun fact: The Black Dragons were disqualified from the factions bowling league for cheating because Tremor bowled a perfect game every time.
Rough placement: Number 105

5. Royal Blender (Kitana, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32lTz1nOkHU
Do you know whats better than being diced with one fan? Being diced with two fans, thats what! Suffering this from both ends, with the fans meeting in the middle when theres nothing left of you must be awful. What makes it even worse is that the two fans dont start at the same time the bottom one gets a head start so that the opponent gets to live long enough to realize whats happening to them before their head gets shredded.

4. Make a Wish (Noob, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpoRR7tOPdA
Noob summons a shadow clone to join him in playing with the opponent, but they havent quite grasped the concept of sharing yet This game was no stranger to violence, but this fatality is particularly shocking with how gruesome it is. Other fatalities where people are ripped apart are relatively quick, but this one draws it out, and also has the opponent in a very uncomfortable pose while theyre being killed. Rumour has it theres a friendship version of this, which involves Noob and the clone not ripping the opponent all the way, instead taking them to Disneyland as one last positive experience before they die of their traumatic injuries. Okay, so I started the rumour right this moment...

3. Mind Game (Quan Chi, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlmSffmd9hA
I first saw this fatality in a trailer for MKX, which cut to the logo just as the hypnotised, slack-jawed opponent walks into the knife. That definitely made a scary impression on me! This full version is even worse, with how they continually walk into the knife, all the way to the hilt, and all with little reaction besides sickening gurgling noises. Quan Chi finishing them off by levitating then dropping them to cut them in half is almost merciful by this point.

2. Double Trouble (Noob, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCYhhwd-Ow4
If you thought that Noob and his shadow couldnt find a way to top the last time they ripped someone in half, you are sorely mistaken! Kintaro tearing his way out of someone was bad enough, but the shadow clone is worse because Kintaro takes a while to come out, and ripping off the arms isnt that bad by Mortal Kombat standards. The shadow clone is faster, and comes up through the mouth, with the first look we get at it being its fingers coming up and out of the opponents mouth, forcing it open. Just imagine having that stuck in your throat, and no amount of coughing, gagging or vomiting will clear the blockage, because the blockage has a will of its own. Death is a kindness when it comes, as you no longer have to deal with that.

1. Temporal Execution (Geras, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r7buSMprPI
Kronika and Quan Chi have fatalities that go on forever. Geras laughs at those amateurs, as this fatality carries on forever across dimensions! Geras attacks his opponent with the severed head of their own counterpart from an alternate timeline, before presenting it to them as a gift. I love the audio cue as they look at the head, suggesting that theyre slowly comprehending what exactly it is theyre looking at. Just before the D4C-esque existential crisis can begin, the cycle begins anew! Violence, comedy, creativity, originality, scale This fatality has it all, making it a worthy winner. Flawless victory!

On that note, the kountdown is over! Thank you to everyone who has read along, and I hope you enjoyed this topic as much as I did. We're not quite finished yet, however. As I promised at the start, I will look at the fatalities for the currently released DLC characters and kameos as well. Look forward to that soon!

We were this close to greatness. This close!

I miscounted the remaining characters again yesterday. There are actually 6 left, not 5. Forget about violent video games making you violent, they make you lose the ability to count as well. No matter - At last, the top 10 is here. Final round, fight!

10. Leg Beatdown (Quan Chi, MK4)
9. Beatdown (Quan Chi, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rUhzWty1t8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxCEXoeuy_Y
The original fatality that carries on forever. Kronika has dominion over time, but all Quan Chi needs is sheer, unmitigated bloodlust. That hes doing something more physically strenuous and doesnt use magic to back him up makes his achievement more impressive. As for where that rage came from, Quan Chi made his debut in the kid-friendly cartoon, Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, where fatalities and gore are off limits. Once he came over to the games, he had something to prove.

8. Razors Edge (Kung Lao, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBS7TJEViwM
The first time Kung Lao used his hat as a trap instead of a projectile or cutting weapon. While the Mortal Kombat X version has the opponent being cut by the saw headfirst, this one has the edge because they go feet first. Kung Lao has to be more proactive here in dragging the opponent into the saw, not to mention the cut begins at the groin. Youll want to wince and put a protective hand between your legs after watching this one!

7. Meat Slicer (Kung Lao, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMmizb5q9wA
This time, the hat is floating in midair. Is there anything it cant do? Kung Lao doesnt settle for merely pushing the opponent into it either. He toys with them, spinning them around and moving closer and further away to cut pieces of them off at a time. For a guy who has such a simple gimmick, Kung Lao has gotten a lot of mileage out of it, and its somehow yet to get old.

6. Tele-copter (Kenshi, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HRVec7np18
Like Kung Lao, Kenshi also levitates his weapon and uses it as a trap. However, Kenshi turns it sideways for use as a fan, then levitating the unfortunate opponent into it to dice them to bits. The result is predictably messy, but a touch of focused gore gets in as slow motion is used to show the opponent making contact with the blade and their face being sliced off. The most impressive thing about this fatality is that Kenshi is able to stay dry during it. Did he use telekinesis for that too, or did he position himself in the perfect spot to stay dry?

15. Eye-solated (Rain, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7Kh6VVTexY
This fatality is another one that mixes several different ideas. Rains watery destructo disc has multiple applications, as he can use it to cut people in half both horizontally and vertically, and the highly pressurized water from it shoots upwards to flay the upper half of the body. The finish where he catches the eyes in a bubble is just the sort of touch that makes a fatality funny instead of offputting.

14. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow (Sindel, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oHwUO51GYY
Sindel goes through a lot of shampoo as it is with all that hair, so she does things like this to make herself feel that its not going to waste. This is a fatality I really wouldnt want done on me, because having so much hair in my mouth would taste awful, not to mention having it move around inside me. Yuck! It also shows us just how much mastery Sindel has over her hair by this stage, having gained enough control to use it in fiendish new applications. Would it be better to watch this on an empty stomach, or after eating?

13. Roman Candle (Li Mei, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SInK8ejJ8nU
This fatality is even flashier than Li Meis other fatality in this game. Using the opponents insides as a fuse to light her fireworks is delightfully creative, as does the decapitating flip kick that further extends the fuse. The light show when the fireworks go off is very pretty, almost as if Li Meis victory is being celebrated.

12. New Species (Dvorah, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsmvyP2XgNY
Wheres Kurt Russell with a flamethrower when you need him? This fatality leans hard into horror as Dvorahs spawn incubates inside the opponent, bursting out of the body in horrific fashion. Dont let anyone who suffers from arachnophobia watch this unless youre a sadist and its April 1st.

11. Below Freezing (Sub Zero, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45ltYqdklC4
Speaking of sadism, Kuai Liang seems to be taking after his more malicious older brother for this one. After freezing his opponents legs and breaking them off, he slowly follows them while their upper half drags itself away, pleading for mercy. I think the finishing stomp is less putting them out of their misery and more Sub Zero has had enough of toying with them.

All of today's kharacters are eliminated. 5 kharacters remain. Next time, the top 10!

Onto the top 20!

20. Hook and Sinker (Leatherface, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8pQhiGQAns
This is another really brutal one that fits the dark atmosphere of Mortal Kombat X. Simply cutting someone in half with the chainsaw wouldnt be enough for a fatality, so the earlier parts with the meat tenderizer and meat hook are used to both increase the violence factor, and to establish the grimy character that makes this unique to Leatherface. Well done for having the highest ranked fatality for a guest character, Leatherface! Go celebrate by treating yourself to a pretty mask or something. Just try not to think about where the meat hook came down from when this fatality is used outdoors.

19. Frozen in Time (Sub Zero, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOcbO6RSNXk
This fatality incorporates a bit of everything from Sub Zeros moveset. He uses the ice clone, which he doesnt tend to use in fatalities so thats another point in its favour, as a trap. He uses the ice slide to knock his opponent into the trap. Then comes the upside down spine rip, and flexing by slamming the head down onto the ice clones outstretched spear. Its fun to see his individual moves combined like this, and the clone into slide in particular is possible in gameplay, albeit without the spear.

18. The Scarecrow (Sektor, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX6kqFgOz4A
Of all the ways people could be killed in Mortal Kombat 9, this may be one of the most creative. I like how after being hit with the device, the opponent panics while Sektor is typing into his wrist pad. They dont know what it does yet, but they know it wont be something good! How sudden the result is also makes this really shocking, as it takes a moment to register what happens. Why do the Lin Kuei or the Tekunin even need scarecrows? Surely its too cold in the Lin Kueis regions for them to grow crops, and the Tekunin are cyborgs who dont need to eat.

17. War Ritual (Nightwolf, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=786WKVGpPoA
I mentioned during the bear fatality that Nightwolf has two excellent fatalities in MK11, and heres his second one. Weve seen him use his tomahawks before, but the results this time are much more violent than before. Pulling the jaw takes a big chunk of the opponents skin with it, while the result of the tomahawk throw is also more impressive than it has been in the past. Was this ritual intended to deter any other tribes from picking a fight with Nightwolfs tribe?

16. Cant Die (Dvorah, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjJEfVB0M3Y
Youll wish you could die if Dvorah used this on you! Mortal Kombat 11 had a couple of fatalities where the opponents skin was peeled off, but this one makes the most sense, as Dvorah restrains the opponent with goo, then uses her appendages to peel the skin off. She manages to do it in a very painful way too, with the camera getting a clear view of the opponents remains. Was it not enough for her to kill Baraka once?

25. Road Rash (Kabal, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dw5alin1KA
JB wanted to see what would happen if Injustice didnt pull its punches, and this fatality gives us an idea of what we could expect from that hypothetical Flash: using super speed to cause a serious case of friction burn. If that werent creative enough, Kabal running back in the opposite direction to get his hookswords so the speeding opponent can fly right into them is an excellent way to finish this.

24. Krash and Burn (Johnny Cage, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6fP2w2pCC0
This fatality is a good example of the difference ending strong can make. For a lot of it, I didnt think this was anything special and was looking at being somewhere in the lower half of the ranking. Then Johnny started the car and it drove off, with the opponent being dragged along by their intestines, which are stuck in the door. That touch of Itchy and Scratchy-esque violence made me burst out laughing and saw this rocket up the list faster than Johnnys car speeds into the nearest wall before it crashes and explodes.

23. Feeding Time (Shang Tsung, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZLKSf0m77o
Shang Tsung must be a master alchemist if he can do stuff like this! The potion in Shang Tsungs other fatality was highly acidic, and the bubbling at the start of the fatality suggests this will go the same way, only for the snake to appear as a bait and switch. I wonder if the potion coagulated into the snake after being poured, or if the potion turned something inside the opponents body into a snake? The snake joining in during the win pose is also a lot of fun.

22. Shokan Amputation (Goro, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdDU5l_sgBI
Goros picked up some tricks from Sheeva, and has now added them to his own limb ripping arsenal. While he can usually rip them off relatively easily, Goro needs to put in a bit more effort this time because of the different positioning, and that hes able to do it reflects well on his strength.

21. Playtime (Ferra/Torr, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV-n-nmZemk
This fatality is another example of something that only a duo could do. Torr throws Ferra in a lethal Fastball Special, and the two pay little regard to getting Ferra out again without causing any further damage. They do this whenever they need to demonstrate who runs Barter Town. To summarise; creative idea, new species, fun to play as, two excellent fatalities remind me again why these two arent popular?

All of today's kharacters except Kenshi are eliminated. 14 kharacters remain. I noticed yesterday that I miscounted and counted one less at some point, so if the maths don't match up with what I posted before, that's why.

30. Take a Spin (Baraka, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iug02KDSsak
A simple concept, but this is a lot of fun. The spin has to be fast enough for crashing into Barakas blade is enough to cut pieces off, and a nice bonus to that effect is that the cut off pieces are sent flying on impact.

29. My Puppet (Kenshi, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zgg1bTK5R6o
Freddy must have rubbed off on Kenshi when they met in MK9, because Kenshi is doing something quite similar to that time Freddy operated someone as a puppet by using their tendons as the strings. The finishing blow is a little underwhelming with Kenshi simply cutting the strings, but at the same time Im not sure what could have been done instead and everything up until then is so good that it doesnt matter too much. Kenshis bow is a good way to end this. He may come up with some twisted ways to kill people, but at least he shows respect.

28. Torn Apart (Goro, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc9oXPxXz8g
Goro takes a different approach to ripping limbs off here, as he doesnt rip them all off at once, instead going for the legs first, followed by the arms. Hes not done yet, as he rips the body in half too! Slow motion on the body rip is used well to emphasise the blood spray.

27. Inner Workings (Ermac, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6J7DNNFp6A
Ive always associated Mortal Kombat X as having a darker edge to it in terms of its design, and nasty fatalities like this one are part of the reason why. Vomiting up internal organs is bad enough, but doing it like this where they come out slowly and move into the camera is even more gruesome.

26. Teamwork (Triborg, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF05-qwq1w8
Teamwork makes the dream work, and in this case, the dream involves murder. Each of the three cyborgs gets a moment to shine here, although by personal favourite is Cyrax and Smoke holding the opponent in place while Sektor does a rocket uppercut. Its a shame there arent alternate versions of this fatality depending on which variant youre using. That way, Cyber Sub Zero could have joined in if you were using the secret variation.

35. Spinal Smash (Sub Zero, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8QCRl6tLBs
Throwing a frozen head in Deception was cool, but now that Scorpion has given the Spine Rip back, Sub Zero can do what he really wanted to last time. Using the head to whip the frozen body and holding the spinal column as a whip is just the kind of creativity I like to see in Mortal Kombat.

34. Heart Condition (Skarlet, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc00-ffIK5g
This may be more basic than usual for Skarlet, but this is the most squeamish fatality in the series for me because it goes inside the body. The heart beating faster as its overloaded with blood grosses me right out because it gives a more realistic touch thats missing from the more outwardly gruesome or outlandish fatalities.

33. Chest Kold (Sub Zero, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0heDu_gSt8
This one begins as what seems to be another take on the Spine Rip, but it turns out Sub Zero is getting bored of that by now, and instead takes this in a new direction, instead using the spine as leverage to rip his opponent in half. This one is made effective by the surprise factor, as well as seeing new takes on old fatalities. In addition to the Spine Rip, Sub Zero holding the opponent above his head while he rips them in half also brings his MK3 fatality to mind where he froze the opponent above his head and shattered them.

32. Better Than One (Ferra/Torr, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRuGpjwt3ao
Master Blaster rules, Making a Mortal Kombat character who is basically Master Blaster in all but name also rules. The way Torr holds the opponent reminds me of how the Shokan hold people during some of their fatalities, while Ferra flipping over them and cutting them in half on her way down gives us something the Shokan wouldnt be able to do while they were still holding the opponent. Im currently undecided on which stage would make the best stand-in for the Thunderdome, so I will have to get on that.

31. Double Dragon (Liu Kang, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcjI2xIm0To
Nice reference Liu Kang, but do you have time to be playing video games in addition to your duties as protector of EarthRealm? His divine promotion gives him access to a pair of fatalities that are a lot flashier than his more functional older ones. This one also serves as an evolution of his dragon fatality, where instead of turning into one himself, Liu Kang conjures up two dragons with his magic to hold the opponent in place. After Liu Kang used this on Shang Tsung in the announcement trailer, Im surprised Shang continued with his schemes instead of deciding he was out of his depth, and to be content with having the one universe where he won.

Tremor, Skarlet and Liu Kang are eliminated. 21 kharacters remain.

Wouldn't it be great if we both had the same number 1? When we're this close, I hope it happens.

40. Spaghettification (Liu Kang, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQEwo-e-qKY
Liu Kang is a benevolent god. Hes a nice enough guy that when he recreated the universe, he even reincarnated past villains under different circumstances so that they could be given the opportunity to redeem themselves, or failing that, to cause less trouble than last time. That isnt to say hes a pushover, however. As this fatality demonstrates, should you cross him, he will not hesitate to END you. If Injustice had fatalities, I could easily see Regime Superman doing this to some poor shmuck he decided needed to be made an example of.

39. Both Ends (Quan Chi, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-6wDIIkh-I
Quan Chi thinks with portals in cruel ways. I wonder what would have happened if he had held his opponent in between the two portals for longer, preventing them from fully going through one of them to emerge from the other? Would it damage their bodies from being held in the portal for too long? Would they go mad from seeing their body in two places at once? The portals closing and cutting them in half is almost a mercy once you go into possibilities like that.

38. Stalag-might (Tremor, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a6trB8wLMk
I dont think Tremor could have chosen three more painful places for his opponent to be impaled from behind. At least they wont need to sit on a rubber ring for the foreseeable future, thanks to Tremor mercy killing them with a head crush between two fist boulders.

37. Face Grind (Kung Lao, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfYdQQUzDMI
Kung Lao can throw or slash with his hat, but here he uses it as a circular saw instead, and pushes his opponent into it head first. This is made more memorable from the way the opponent is given a moment before Kung Lao steps on them, and they also try to resist him before his foot wins out. Kung Lao used a variant of this fatality on Nitara in the recent movie, although in that case Nitara flew right into it without Kung Lao needing to push her. I thought zombies were the stupid undead, not vampires!

36. As One (Noob, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P99EfcSOsk
Between this and Quan Chis fatality, closing portals while people are travelling through them is another winner for me. Theres only one portal this time in comparison to Quan Chis two, but Noob makes up for it with style as the portal closes in slow motion, giving the bisection more impact. Big ups to the opponent as well for crawling to try and attack Noob. This may be one of the fatalities where the opponent survives longest after the attack finishes, aside from the ones where they don't die obviously.

Reiko uses a staff to cut parts off of the opponent one by one, before impaling them on the staff. So far so Jade, but then comes the part Jade would never do. Reiko grabs the opponents ribcage and pulls it out of them, dragging them down until their head is impaled and can go no further. The ending camera angle of the head on top of the staff, while the innards are visible below it, is a very gruesome shot to end on. Who hurt you, Reiko?

44. Telekinetic Contortion (Kenshi, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_XSakjmyeU
For this fatality, Kenshi doesnt use his sword, only his telekinesis. However, dont let the lack of sword action trick you into thinking the opponent is getting off lightly. Kenshi contorting the opponent and breaking their limbs with his powers makes this one the most painful bloodless fatalities. Since they like their film references, its a surprise that Midway didnt go all the way and recreate the head explosion from Scanners. This may have been even higher if they had. Fun fact: if you use this fatality in a Kenshi mirror match, his eyes wont pop out because his blindfold is keeping them in place.

43. Split Ends (Kenshi, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l8ZBMASuWI
For someone as stylish as Kenshi, simply cutting people in half isnt enough. Using telekinesis to move the sword is better, but sometimes he wants to toy with people and give them false hope, which is when he does this. I like to think the opponent is thinking Ha, you missed! How could you miss when I was right in front of you? until theyre force pushed back into the blade. Thats a push a Jedi could be proud of, and the slow motion is employed well, giving you time to realise whats about to happen, just as the opponent is coming to the same conclusion.

42. Show of Hands (Tanya, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IqkwqAicR8
The magic hands were in Tanyas other MK1 fatality as well, but she puts them to better use here, holding the opponent in place while she prepares her javelin throw. The return of the action replay lets us see the money shot from a different angle, which in this case shows the body being destroyed in a totally different way. Its almost like two fatalities in one.

41. For the General (Reiko, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OitOnPaAGw
For this fatality, Reiko takes a page out of Haviks playbook, bending his opponent out of shape and using their own body against them. Whats more, he upstages the Cleric of Chaos by doing it only mutilating his opponent and not himself. To finish, he pulls off a Spine Rip of his own. Here as well, Reiko manages to differentiate from his inspiration Reiko took the skull and spinal cord, but the head remains, and you can see it sag as theres nothing left inside to give it facial structure. I repeat: who hurt you, Reiko?

Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Tanya and Reiko are eliminated. 24 kharacters remain.

50. Soultaker (Shang Tsung, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxZc-u9rlNE
Shang Tsung must have absorbed Ermacs soul just before using this fatality, as it seems to be influencing him. I like the impact of each slam, with blood and gibs splattering on the floor, as well as the finishing jump with the shockwave and souls flying around. It sells how strong Shang Tsung can be. He tends to be a more magical character, so this fatality serves as a reminder that he can pose a physical threat as well.

49. Telekinetic Slams (Ermac, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdFdEwYlflI
Weve seem Ermac slamming his opponent really fast until they explode. Weve seen him slam them once, but he does it really, really hard. This fatality is the baby bears porridge of Ermac slamming people. He slams them twice fast first, then he finishes them off with a really hard explosive slam. Its the best of both worlds. Its also pretty wholesome that Ermac says Yes! once hes finished. Its like he knows hes done a good job.

48. Telekinetic Tear (Ermac, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeIbbayCh1s
Instead of tossing people around, Ermac uses his powers to crumple his opponent up into a ball. He then decides this isnt messy enough, and stretches them out until they rip in half. The first part is quite original, as we dont see telekinesis used like that in Mortal Kombat very often. This fatality was good enough that Green Lantern copied it for Mortal Kombat VS DC, although Hal seems to think if he stops at the crushing into a tiny ball part, that his opponent is still alive. Its either that, or hes going through another Parallax phase and doesnt care about plausible deniability.

47. Double Down (Shao Kahn, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWIOTMLlgII
If Shao Kahn is in a hurry and youre ahead of him in a queue, always let him go ahead of you. If you do it fast enough, he might not use this fatality on you. Heres Johnny! played this concept for laughs, but this fatality goes for the cool, powerful approach by having Shao Kahn rip the opponent in half while walking through them, instead of making a hole like Johnny did and leaving it at that.

46. Freeze and Throw (Sub Zero, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td2wU7rTG1Q
When you have ice powers, sometimes you want to have fun with them. Sub Zero is no exception, as he tests himself by shattering a frozen opponent with a thrown object. Scorpion stole his Spine Rip in this game, so Sub Zero only takes the head to use as his throwing implement of choice. Besides, the head would be harder to throw accurately and forcefully with the spinal cord still attached and impacting the aerodynamics of the projectile.

54. #GirlPower (Cassie, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax-83KfoRsQ
No means no! I need something more light-hearted after Havik, and this is just the ticket. Johnny would be so proud that his daughter retained his proclivity for nut shots. That she can kick so hard, the skeleton shoots right out made me burst out laughing the first time I saw this.

53. Stone Tomb (Tremor, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW1HxqfpQbU
If youve ever wanted to recreate the trash compactor scene from Star Wars, look no further! Unfortunately for his opponent, Tremor has made certain theres no escape by encasing their feet in stone before the walls start to close in, and there are no friendly droids elsewhere on the Death Star to reverse the walls either. Once the opponent is squashed, theres only an arm left of them, in an inverted 127 Hours. 721 Hours?

52. Up in Smoke (Smoke, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz1zedTJ-yc
Mortal Kombat has a lot of ninjas, but Smoke is the one who acts most like a ninja. He takes advantage of his gaseous powers to create cover for a number of sneak attacks, each one chipping away at his opponent bit by bit. Theres rarely an attempt at retaliation in fatalities, but its especially cool to have one where they cant hit you because they cant even see where Smoke is. They are entirely at his mercy.

51. Acid Bath (Reptile, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnu4bllT6Uk
Reptiles acid is at its most corrosive here, melting away the opponents entire body and leaving nothing but a puddle where they used to be, but not before Reptile spares the head from one grisly fate in favour of another. Which would you prefer, melting away into nothing, or travelling through the digestive tract before the eventual excretion on the other side? I guess it doesnt make much difference if youre not going to be conscious either way, but Id have to go with the acid. It may be more painful, but it would be over sooner, and with the eating, you still experience the melting, but with another type of pain on top.

Cetrion, Havik, Cassie Cage, Smoke and Reptile are eliminated. 28 kharacters remain.

60. Limb Rip (Goro, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfjmYhhT21Y
I owe Kintaro an apology. I ranked his Quad Rip at number 93, despite it being better than this very similar fatality in several ways. Sure, Kintaro struggles more to do the rip, which reflects better on Goro, and Goro celebrates afterwards, which is another point in his favour. Is that really enough to rank 33 places higher at this stage? I dont know. You know what? Pretend Im swapping them around.

59. Fore! (Shao Kahn, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8hBl82HTHI
Make Outworld Great Again wasnt Shao Kahns first Donald Trump reference, as hes also a keen golfer. Hes got a strong swing, and a powerful technique for planting the tee firmly in place. Unfortunately, this fatality doesnt give us an example of his putting game, but he has no problems with his drives!

58. Bug Me (Dvorah, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPt2hkA1uXY
Drahmin must be jealous of the control Dvorah has over her flies. She can steer them around, blow holes through her opponents torso, and even devour her opponents flesh, leaving only bone behind. Dvorah crushing the discarded skull underfoot is a good way to bring her back into focus at the end, while emphasising that this fatality is a team effort.

57. Maintaining Balance (Cetrion, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnukHk5fDHY
Cetrion has mastered three of the four elements. Just air left and she will have achieved the Avatar State! Using different elements lets her combine fatalities from separate characters that wouldnt mix normally. Youll never catch Rain using fire, or Scorpion using water for instance, so this gives us something we wouldnt see otherwise. The opponent being cut in three from the earth claws at the end looks extra painful as you can see the burns from the fire around their body.

56. Atomic Heart (Havik, MK1)
55. Radius Incision (Havik, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LA1rBRzL6ig
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VjtarGfFu8
As the token freak character of Deception, Havik had a bizarre, unorthodox moveset where his attacks often hurt him in the animations as much as his opponent. For his long-awaited return in Mortal Kombat 1, that concept is mixed with a healthy dose of body horror, as Haviks regeneration ability allows him to deal horrific damage without any concern for how much hes mutilating himself in the process. This remains true for his fatalities. Atomic Heart is the Mortal Kombat equivalent of a rejected organ transplant, as Havik swaps hearts with his opponent, then destroys theirs while his kills them via incompatibility. Radius Incision leaves the opponent more intact than most fatalities, and yet it still manages to be one of the most gruesome fatalities in the series for Havik breaking his own bones to stab the opponent with them. The shot of him slashing downwards in particular is the stuff of nightmares. Also the stuff of nightmares; looking up this video gave me plenty of videos of real radius incisions. Im squeamish when it comes to anything medical, get that out of here!

Is there a list of what characters are left?

I hadn't posted the full list until now, but here's who's left, in alphabetical order, without specifying how many fatalities each character has left, so there'll be no spoilers in that respect. Feel free to speculate about what's coming up!

Baraka, Cassie Cage, Cetrion, D'Vorah, Ermac, Ferra/Torr, Geras, Goro, Havik, Johnny Cage, Kabal, Kenshi, Kitana, Kung Lao, Leatherface, Li Mei, Liu Kang, Nightwolf, Noob Saibot, Quan Chi, Rain, Reiko, Reptile, Sektor, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Sindel, Skarlet, Smoke, Sub Zero, Tanya, Tremor, Triborg

Johnbobb posted...
Also I forget if it was mentioned, but is Kronika's story ending fatality eligible? If so that would've been a top 10er for me:
Kronika was indeed eligible. She was at number 178, which I think was too low in retrospect. I think what happened with her is that by the time I got to her in my ranking, there had been so many fatalities that I was using specific ones to denote tiers and comparing new ones to those, before deciding on where exactly to rank once I had decided not to place it in the next tier up. I'm sure it would rank higher if I did this again in future.

MegaWentEvil posted...
Speaking of it, whoever made Kronika's death animation must hate her a lot.

I concur. She could have just exploded like all the other bosses, but no! Gotta make sure she's super dead and never coming back. Until she does. Sort of.

65. Kondemned to the Damned (Shang Tsung, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJeaQm2PNq4
Baraka isnt the only one calling for backup, as here Shang Tsung does it as well. Getting to be the villain and throwing a defenceless hero to your minions to have their way is always going to be fun, and these zombies arent gentle, with how frantically they scratch and claw at their prey. Yanking the opponents skeleton out is a gruesome way to finish.

64. Selfie (Cassie Cage, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSS60eivLRE
This is one of the most memorable and iconic fatalities of the modern games. Cassie taking a selfie with her defeated opponent is funny on its own, but then the image is uploaded to social media, where theres a whole host of in-jokes and other characters commenting on the photo. My favourites are Sonya angrily demanding to know why Kano is on Cassies friend list, and Goro repeating his name like a Pokemon for some reason. Heres the burning question Is Cassie a millennial or Gen Z?

63. Bloody Boots (Tanya, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hgZYWvHUfo
My god, this ones horny! Because this fatality takes its time with each stage, you can tell this is playing to the kink as much as possible without risking an AO rating. I bet a lot of degenerates would love to have Tanya step on them. Not me though. I got my Tanya thirst out of my system earlier in the rankings with the hurricanrana!

62. Threads of Ill Fate (Ashrah, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQleZN57Xfo
Fatalities tend to be brutal and violent. This one takes a different tack, as Ashrahs spinning and weaving make her look really graceful and elegant while wrapping the light thread around her opponent. Dont forget, this is still a fatality, so it may not be as savage as usual, but its still every bit as deadly, as we find out once Ashrah pulls the threads her opponent has been tangled in ever tighter.

61. Head Cage (Takeda, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFLmprf_P6U
His mother was murdered, his father abandoned him for the longest time Takeda had a rough childhood, and its times like this that make me wonder if hes handled that trauma in the most healthy way. The gurgle after the opponent is given their bony new mask, along with the twitching after they fall are both quite unnerving.

Shinnok, Ashrah and Takeda are eliminated. 33 kharacters remain.

70. Dragon Bite (Liu Kang, MK4)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGTBV79qsXo
This is the highest ranked version of Liu Kangs dragon fatality because, although the graphics arent as advanced as in the MK9 version, this one makes up for it by having the dragon hold the opponent in its mouth and shake them around like a ragdoll, differing from the bites of previous and later appearances. The slight camera movement also helps to make the shaking look more violent.

69. The Grinder (Shinnok, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpPfFt1Omv4
This upgraded version of Shinnoks two handed skeleton clap sees him have some fun with his opponent first, by twisting and squeezing them around until they break in half, before doing the clap to finish. The original had a better clap sound effect, but this version has the edge because the clap comes after the opponent has broken in half, causing the two halves to be smushed against each other as well as the hands.

68. Headed Nowhere (Kung Lao, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpIIEWkhlko
Its not often that Kung Laos teleportation ability is used in his fatalities, and this one uses it in a really creative way, slashing the opponent with his hat as he rises up from the teleport. That would have been a satisfying fatality in itself, but the severed head from earlier falls in between the two halves of the body, before being cut in half itself, in a good display of how saucy Kung Lao can get at his best.

67. Flick Trick (Shinnok, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6P5DBQwYvo
The NetherRealm is a great place to pop open a cold one with the boys, because Shinnok is on hand to ensure those cold ones, stiff jar lids or what have you, can always be opened. Both of his MKX fatalities have Shinnok using his own hands to control the skeleton hands, and I like the thumb flick he does here a little better than his animations in the other fatality. Between this fatality, and the name of his other MKX fatality, I suspect Shinnok aspires to move into an exciting career as a chef once hes done with the whole fallen Elder God necromancer thing.

66. Four Piece Kombo (Baraka, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHW--Nh2xd8
Looks like meats back on the menu, boys! Wholesome and Fatality are two words that you would never expect to see used together, but this one manages it. Its even from Baraka, of all people! It seems Mortal Kombat 1 is full of surprises. This wouldnt be nearly as good without the other Tarkatans staying on the win screen, still eating. Its just a shame that the kameo cant join in. They must all be vegetarians. All this food talk is making me hungry

75. Hat Trick (Kung Lao, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5h0Fl7stvo
For this fatality, Kung Lao combines both of his MK2 fatalities into one. He does both in one smooth motion, catching the hat upon its return so that he can go straight into the hat slash. The slash is also nice and detailed, as the flesh and sinew holding the two halves together slowly breaks apart. For one last touch, Kung Lao wipes the blood off his hat. Its understandable he doesnt that that on there any longer than is necessary, as it would cause the metal to rust.

74. Internal Grinder (Cyrax, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foXTKzC8G6U
This feels a bit like the inverse of Sektors Kompactor. Sektor squashes his opponent with an external compactor, while Cyrax pulls them into him. Before then, he gets plenty of mileage from smacking the opponent on the floor with his crane arm. Once hes finishing grinding them up inside, opening the chest cavity again to eject the excess gore is a satisfying finale.

73. Telekinetic Slams (Ermac, UMK3)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr_aipLJW98
Ermac uses his powers to slam the opponent on the top and bottom of the screen repeatedly until they explode. The speed at which the opponent gets tossed back and forth is what makes this a success, as it wouldnt be nearly as satisfying if it were slower.

72. Mind Over Splatter (Ermac, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEZeXY2K8AA
In contrast, this fatality is slower than the last one, but it takes advantage of that by building up to the slam. Ermac uses his powers to lift up the opponent and rip their limbs off, then he turns them upside down, then comes the slam. Theres only one slam this time, but its such a forceful one that the opponents head is destroyed on impact.

71. Two Hand Clap (Shinnok, MK4)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsABK_OIlTU
Shinnok gets another dominant display here, as he claps his opponent between two giant skeletal hands like the insignificant insect he no doubt sees them as. A well chosen sound effect places emphasis on the clap, and the hands being smeared in blood as they return to the NetherRealm is also an excellent detail.

Jacqui, Sheeva, Kano and Cyrax are eliminated. 36 kharacters remain.

I never even considered that! That would have been hilarious, at least until weirdos started getting turned on by seeing the female characters naked without their feet, even if scenery censors or camera angles were used to keep anything juicy off screen.

80. Gyro-Nope (Kenshi, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fs3omyAabg
Its difficult to argue that Kenshi isnt one of the coolest characters in Mortal Kombat, and this fatality is a good demonstration of why that is. He uses his telekinetic powers to hack the opponent to pieces, spinning his sword inside them in all directions. Kenshi isnt facing his opponent while he does this, which doesnt make much difference at first glance because hes blind, but when you take into account that he uses psychic powers to sense his surroundings, its extra cold that he doesnt in the opponents direction. Telekinetically returning Sento to its sheath at the end serves as an additional reminder that Kenshi is so cool that he was able to do all this without moving.

79. Head Case (Kano, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8RiZGiur6w
Kano just needed to turn his opponent around for this fatality, and he found the most violent way possible of doing it. Between this and his reverse Heart Rip, it seems Kano does some of his best work from behind. It would have been cool if hed used the intestines that fall out of the opponent after he disembowels them to strangle them while using the laser. I fondly remember Jasons MKX ending where he does just that (aside from the laser part, obviously) to reject Liu Kangs proposal of an alliance.

78. Nothin but Neck (Jacqui, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7D2gt8ocR4
Like Kano above, Jacqui needed to do some setup for this fatality, and she gave it her all, jumping at the opponent to punch their head down, then a shotgun blast to the stomach to blow it to bits before we get to see it. And thats just the setup! The main part, with the barrier cutting the opponent in half, is one of the most creative ways weve seen in the series of that being done. It helps that the opponent is cut in half in a different way than usual, with the front and back being separated, instead of the usual horizontal or vertical split.

77. Lend a Hand (Sheeva, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALW4X2AuwEg
As Ive said before, attacking people with their own body parts always goes down well, and Sheeva ripping off the opponents arms then slapping the opponent silly using them is no exception. As with her other MK9 fatality, the climax is underwhelming, but this one more than makes up for it by having Sheeva hold onto the arms and use them to clap for herself. An excellent example of violence being so over the top that it becomes funny in a black comedy way.

76. Eat Your Heart Out (Kano, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOYPRD5PlD8
Its fitting that Kanos time in the running should end with an upgraded version of his original fatality. Hes had a few variations on his Heart Rip over the years, but this one is the best because hes considerate enough to fill in the hole where the opponents heart used to be with something else. Unfortunately for them, Kano flunked his high school Biology classes

85. Komo-tose (Nightwolf, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE64sy9C390
Its been a while since we last saw Nightwolf. He had a couple of fatalities in the 200s, and a glut in the 400s, so hes one of those unlucky characters who hasnt historically had great fatalities. Mortal Kombat 11 changed that for him, as he finally came into his own and got two excellent ones. Admittedly, its nothing special to start with, but that quickly changes once Nightwolf summons his bear Stand to rip the opponent apart. Now Im wondering who would win in a fight between Nightwolfs bear Stand and Unknowns wolf Stand in Tekken Tag. Did we ever find out what the deal was with [HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF]? Yeah, I named it.

84. Bottoms Up (Bo Rai Cho, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQdbcfJZwqQ
What on earth is in that jug Bo Rai Cho drinks from? The guy makes Oliver Reed look like a lightweight if a single chug is enough to make anyone else vomit up their intestines, while he remains with his organs safely inside where they belong, and even relatively un-sozzled.

83. Bubble Head (Cassie Cage, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7W2jgrSs7g
The kill itself isnt special, as Cassie simply shoots her opponent a few times. Its the character she displays in this fatality that gives it such a high placement. Cassie may have the military background of her mother, but her personality was all from her fathers side. After the headshot, she stems the blood flow using her chewing gum, which creates a bubble of blood that swells until it eventually pops. The blood flow stops after that, so it even works, as the bubble popping must have spread the gum around enough of the bullet wound. Im overthinking this!

82. Scatterbrained (Kenshi, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZc9hgpHpIA
MK4 had a few fatalities that threw something towards the screen to take advantage of its newly discovered third dimension. However, its used as the basis of this fatality instead of being a gimmick, as Kenshi telekinetically beats his opponent against the camera repeatedly, before slicing them in half with his sword. This fatality is memorable for its interesting visual presentation, which is unlike anything else in the series, at least used to this extent.

81. Stripped Down (Sheeva, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRxT3RTwa_c
Remember back when Sheeva did this in MK3, and I compared it to skinless Stimpy? Not so this time. This is closer to that one bit from Terrifier 2. Though its not quite to that level (thank goodness!), the opponent standing there screaming without their skin is quite effective. Sheeva could came come up with a better finisher than simply kicking them over, but in her defence she has her hands full holding the skin. Maybe if she used it as a bat or club to knock the opponent over?

Terminator, Sonya, Jax and Bo Rai Cho are eliminated. 40 kharacters remain.

90. Heavenly Light (Ashrah, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6daNZQLtBx4
Ashrah had a fatality in Deception where she light to disintegrate her opponent. This one is much better for incorporating that as part of it instead of making it the whole thing. First, Ashrah summons angelic wings, which she shoots feathers from to pummel the opponent, an impressive lead-in for the light. The light also looks a lot more impressive this time, with Ashrah slamming her sword down to create a wave of light.

89. Target Terminated (Terminator, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZXFMquoE-g
Of all the guest fighter summons another character from their franchise to kill the opponent fatalities, this is the best one. An oddly specific niche, but there we go. It helps that aspect isnt the entire fatality, with the opponent losing their legs in the time warp first. The defenceless opponent being sent into the future world where Skynet has brought about Judgement Day is very cool.

88. Headhunter (Sonya, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSYhTUmSb0E
This fatality sees Sonya combine her two favourite toys, her razor wire and her drone. While overkill hasnt always worked for Sonya, like with the helicopter fatality in MK11 for instance, in this case it does, as the drone peppering the severed head with its machine gun is good for a laugh. Even better is Sonya hanging the head from her side as a souvenir. This will make a fine addition to her collection! Predator would be proud.

87. Hairline Fracture (Sub Zero, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USL8wIt-gf8
This fatality is another one that references a memorable kill from elsewhere. In this case, its Tessais death scene from Ninja Scroll. While Sub Zeros version lacks the opponent grabbing for him, intending to kill him with the giant ice spike sticking out of their head which marks Tessai out as the hardest of hardcore, it instead adapts the move to work as a finisher with one fighter having input, instead of a technique used in a back-and-forth bout. Sub Zero cut the opponent in half while throwing the spike out, then spinning them around with a roundhouse kick so they can see the spike coming, then the top half of their body falls off after the impalement. Its certainly a worthwhile trade-off for the lack of a Taking you with me attempt.

86. T Wrecks (Jax, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzp7cyQhkl4
We can count on some characters to show off some of their personality through their fatalities, with the Cages being excellent examples of this. However, its quite a treat when other characters, who do it more sparingly, get in on the fun. Snapping the opponents head in half by their jaw is gruesome enough, but Jax adding the touch of using the lower jaw as the worlds grimmest ash tray is what makes this extra memorable. Jacqui must be terrible at choosing Fathers Day gifts if these are the lengths Jax will go to for an ash tray. He hints at it every year, but shes totally oblivious. Just give the man what he wants already, you know hell use it!

95. Death Trap (Erron Black, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqYSPH9emt0
Erron Black likes shooting people or using fancy grenades for his fatalities. He shoots them in this one too, but this is still his most unique fatality by virtue of the weapons he uses. First, he throws out an enormous bear trap to clamp the opponent, then when the time comes to shoot them, he switches out his usual six shooter for a hunting rifle at point blank range. Lodging the rifle inside the opponent prevents them from being sent flying like Jacquis shotgun fatality, but the gun has a much heavier sound effect to make up for it.

94. Rock Paper Baraka (Baraka, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NAjKz8BIwU
Baraka would be so easy to beat at Rock Paper Scissors. Hed play Scissors every time! Then hed put the scissors to use, cutting your torso in three, beheading you and cutting the head in half, impaling each half on his arms. The last thought going through your brain, just before its cut in half, would be to regret ever challenging him, as now you know why Baraka is the undefeated Rock Paper Scissors champion.

93. Quad Rip (Kintaro, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcB1a37cdxE
Kintaro does what any four armed monster with super strength would in his situation pull someone apart with a limb in each hand! Its the quintessential Shokan finisher, and you love to see it.

92. Just a Scratch (Raiden, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvDUYMp2P24
It turns out Johnny Cage was onto something that time he mistook Raiden and Liu Kang for cosplayers. Raidens hobby of choice is acting out Monty Python routines, the other participants consent being optional. Since Raiden gets pretty rough, especially with the throw at the end, he needs either a steady supply of partners or a new, less violent hobby.

91. The Storms Arrival (Raiden, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvVJwo9YM9c
Stop, stop! Hes already dead! Since Raiden is no longer a god, he doesnt have to set a good example any more, and can let loose with all the gratuitous mutilation he can muster. Any individual part of this could have been a fatality in its own right, but putting them all together effectively gives us three fatalities in one.

All of today's kharacters except Baraka are eliminated. 44 kharacters remain.

100. Pop Goes the Mortal (Joker, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcZEUgrg-Qs
Only Joker would treat killing people like a game to such an extent that he sings while finishing them off. Taking someones head off with a jack in the box inside their chest is very creative, and on brand for Joker with his deadly bag of tricks. Where does he get those wonderful toys? Between the two songs, I prefer the second one.

99. Food for Thought (Baraka, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR6uKWL63lY
Mileenas starting to rub off on Baraka, as hes gotten a taste for heads! The best part is the uniquely Baraka touch of pulling the brain out by stabbing it with his blade. I think he threw the face aside because hes saving it for a snack later.

98. Ice Sculpture (Frost, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGhwNRl6xqI
The freezing fatalities we see in Mortal Kombat tend to be efficient and skilled in their use of ice. Fittingly for her personality, Frost has something a bit less disciplined with her ice grenade. The detonation flash freezing her opponent mid explosion leaves them looking like a Necromorph. Remember to aim for the limbs once they defrost!

97. Boss Fatality (Corrupted Shinnok, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwIdWzGgqDs
After Shinnok does the hard work of fighting any foolish mortals who try to stop him, hes charitable and/or lazy enough to let his minions finish them off, by flying them into the bladed pillar nearby. That alone wouldnt be enough, so Shinnok adds a nastier edge by dragging them down the pillar to cut them in half. Finally, the Parademons come back to feast on the innards, and theyre the reason this ranks so highly. Their presence gives this fatality an evil overlord feel thats perfectly suited for the non-playable final boss.

96. Pinned Down (Kung Jin, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58U3H3Vt6-8
At this point youre just showing off. Hitting the bullseye on a trick shot is one thing, but its quite another to shoot first, then hit the targets with the arrows on their way down. How could he even have got the opponents torso to explode in such a way that the head and arms went off at the perfect trajectory? I know now why Kung Jin was a one-and-done hes far too powerful. If he ever came back, he would solo everyone at once!

105. Peekaboo (Goro, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGr82lIA9Yg
Goros no sissy like Ermac, he likes to get up close and personal. When he puts peoples heads in their stomachs, he does it with his bare hands. He also rips the flesh from the opponents belly so he can see their head staring back at him. Ermac may be flashier, but Goro does it more brutally, which gives him the edge.

104. Shokan Reborn (Shang Tsung, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1AlSx9Xb7U
Shang Tsung may be an evil soul-absorbing sorcerer, but even he has friends. Kintaro doesnt get much limelight as he tends to be overshadowed by Goro, who had the good fortune to come first, so its awfully kind of Shang to let Kintaro join in on two of his fatalities. While he transformed into Kintaro first time around, this time the opponent transforms, and its a whole lot more fatal, as Kintaro makes his way out bit by bit.

103. Chain Reaction (Scorpion, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja-Sm6DToZg
Scorpion has used his spear plenty of times before, but now hes showing off something new the ability to heat up the chain. This allows him to use both the spear and his fire-based abilities simultaneously, while also cutting the opponent in half in style, by flipping over them, dropping into the ground then jumping out again in front of them.

102. Eye-Palling Victory (Scorpion, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPGJIp3xTnI
He finally says the thing! Scorpion has had several fatalities involving his spear, but it took until now for him to say one of his catchphrases during a fatality! We see that he also has more control over the spear than he used to, gaining the ability to do a physics-defying curved throw. In your face, Newton! Alas, this is Scorpions last remaining fatality, meaning the face of Mortal Kombat falls just short of the top 100.

101. Hazed and Infused (Smoke, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rT5gmLeSHw
One of Smokes brutalities in this game has him cut his opponents arms off during his command grab. This fatality uses a move like that as its starting point, building on the brutality as Smoke introduces the grenade and places it in the opponents mouth, when they cant use their arms to remove it. Just to make sure they dont try to spit it out either, they get his karambit to the lower jaw. The resulting explosion gives us enough time to admire the gruesome result before the opponent falls over.

109. Robo-Sek (Sektor, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Om_WeXlj70
This is what Lex Luthors fatality would have been if he wasnt limited by a Teen rating. While Sektor doesnt bombard the opponent with missiles like Lex did, Sektors missiles get to do more damage and he fires some fancy trick shots while hes at it.

108. Icecutioner (Sub Zero, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGadWFJgUdc
Off with their head! This is one of the more elaborate beheadings the series has done, and Sub Zero using his ice powers to freeze the opponent and style this as an execution is a simple but creative twist. The head then being frozen and shattered with a punch from a no-nonsense Sub Zero is a bonus.

107. Head Out (Ermac, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_PMZQ6rsIo
Putting heads somewhere they dont usually go is good for a laugh. Ermac doesnt touch the head, instead using his telekinesis to mess with it remotely. Since he moves the head up, down and forward, it would have been nice if he had pushed it out of the back before pulling it forward towards himself again. Like Tanyas drill, Ermac also pulls out some entrails as a side effect.

106. Smoked Out (Smoke, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa-FalgtGSM
Smoke had a fatality in the bottom 10 where he disappeared, implied to be turning into smoke and entering the opponent, and the opponent died. This takes what might have been the idea behind that one, and does it justice. Instead of disappearing, Smoke instead pokes the opponent and fills their body with superheated steam, cooking them until they have no skin left, which looks painful to say the least. As a bonus, Smoke doesnt kill himself as well this time!

115. Up the Middle (Baraka, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXccu7wYNgs
Baraka could have simply cut his opponent in half here, but to get this high up, that wouldnt be enough. No, hes got to do it in style now, and impaling his opponent so that half of them is attached to the blade he isnt using to cut them in half definitely qualifies. Holding the impaled half aloft in triumph is also worth extra points.

114. Electric Disintegration (Raiden, MK)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcXC8EF350A
No, your eyes do not deceive you. A censored SNES fatality ranked the best part of 300 places above its uncensored counterpart. Not only that, it got within touching distance of the top 100! This just goes to show, censorship need not be an inherently bad thing as long as you have the creativity to come up with a satisfying alternative that still gets the original point across. Blowing up the opponents head is all well and good, but Raiden using his godly power to incinerate with such scorching lightning that the opponent crumbles into dust makes him seem even more powerful.

113. When Lightning Strikes (Rain, MKT)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4VqaKIkYW0
When Rains upside down uppercut dropped in the bottom 10, I noted that his other fatality is much better. Now here he is, doing Raiden things better than Raiden! A lightning bolt sound effect would have been better than the body hit sound effect, but it becomes less of a problem once Rain picks up speed, bombarding the opponent with lightning bolts until they explode. The explosion sound effects and second scream also do a lot to help it.

112. Death Machine (Triborg, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feEsR1A1fkc
This is a new take on Sektors Kompactor fatality, but since Triborg is three cyborgs in one, they transform into a giant machine with a spear and a circular saw courtesy of Cyrax to handicap any attempt to hold up the crusher. Unfortunately, I do have to dock a couple of points because the machine looks a bit Fisher Price and Im not sure which part of the machine Smoke contributes (unless hes the spear?) Nonetheless, its a worthy successor to the original. Speaking of which

111. Kompactor (Sektor, MK3)
110. Kompactor (Sektor, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFttaWNNBfw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh1cc1ars4k
Sektor doesnt need a saw to squash people. The other two cyborgs are holding him back! The MK3 version has a cool whooshy sci-fi sound effect on the kompactor as it crushes Sektors opponent, while the recreation in MK1 has lovely visual effects as the device emerges from Sektor, then lights up to signal its activation. The new version also gives the opponent just enough time to react to their imminent fate.

120. Hat Split (Kung Lao, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3z6vIIaO5s&t=6s
Speaking of the indecision that comes with this stage of the ranking, I think I put this a little too high. Its still good, and I do like how the opponent splits apart more slowly than in the MK2 version, but in retrospect, I think I should have swapped those two around, because the MK2 version has more of a contrast to other fatalities in its game than this one does. At least theyre only two spaces apart out of 539, so its not the end of the world.

119. Splitting Hairs (Kitana, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgFy6gLV8Bw
This fatality has a creative way of cutting up the opponents head, with Kitana splitting it into three segments. You dont see that every day, as its usually removed whole or cut in half. I also like how Kitana cuts off the opponents hands first, which serves a logical purpose of preventing the opponent from trying to throw her off them when she climbs on to continue the fatality. Kitana is being clever and thinking ahead!

118. Edenian Drill (Tanya, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uht8gbzguc
I want to know where Tanya gets her shoes from, because those are some heavy duty heels if they can do that without breaking off! Sliding through the hole in the opponents torso is really fun looking and continues the athleticism from the first part as she flips over her opponent. Theres even a touch of realism, as anyone who did this would inevitably get some internal organs brought out with them.

117. Hat Sever Kung (Kung Lao, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9Puyz0_aew
One of these days, NetherRealm will run out of ideas for Kung Lao fatalities. If the piggyback of doom is anything to go by, that day is a long way off yet!

116. Heres Johnny! (Johnny Cage, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ_9qmGmJ-4
Johnnys MK9 fatality was the start of his fatalities going in a more comedic direction, but this one solidified it. Johnnys personality as the comic relief who still packs a punch despite that is fully established here and has been in place ever since. Underestimate him at your peril! However, the fatality does fizzle out a bit after Heres Johnny! and would have benefited from either ending there (which Cassies version from MK11 did, although her punchline wasnt as good), or just a little something extra afterwards, like Johnny pushing the body down instead of letting it fall of its own accord, for instance.

125. Hair Comes Trouble (Sindel, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG1WoStW_OA
Whos your queen? Sindel asks before the finishing blow. If one were to answer You are, would that be enough for her to spare you, or are we past the point of mercy by now? There are some creative uses for the hair here, as it becomes thick and taut enough to break the opponents arms, then rip them off, and also having strands enter the opponents wounds to pick them up. There could be something in that for a potential future fatality in which Sindel uses her hair to operate a person like a puppet. That could be cool to see!

124. Grand Finale (Li Mei, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dRkOAtnGxI
This fatality would be perfect for Gambit if he got into Mortal Kombat. Not that he would ever be considered, so Im sure hes content with an attractive woman taking inspiration from him. Li Mei has really benefited from her new kinetic fireworks in this game. I think they make her a lot more memorable. This is unrelated to the fatality, but the funny little fat man running across the background at the start also put a smile on my face. Tee hee, look at him go!

123. Make it Rain (Skarlet, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0qWIIQfijo
Its not often we get to see a kombatant attack themselves during a fatality without it being a suicide attack. Skarlet attacks herself so she can use her own blood as a weapon to impale her opponent. The finish of cutting open the opponents stomach so she can bathe in their blood works as both a display of dominance and showing off the lore of Skarlet growing stronger by absorbing the blood of her enemies. You know this ones a winner because JP has quite a similar critical art in Street Fighter 6.

122. Body Slice (Kung Lao, MK2)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxfhTKP3lz4
Of all the 2D fatalities, this is likely the most gruesome one. Its unusually detailed in how some of the bones can be seen within the sliced halves of the body. 2D fatalities usually have either bones or flesh, but this one has both. It also established Kung Lao as the deadliest hat wearer in fiction since Oddjob.

121. Ice Shatter (Sub Zero, MK2)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW3OuqYqG9I
Sub Zeros replacement fatality from the SNES version of the first game was one of the better replacements, and it seems Midway agreed, as they brought it back in the sequel, while upping the gore to be equivalent to other fatalities. Its also neat that this fatality needs to be done while the opponent is frozen, making it a fun secret to find.

130. Split Decision (Scorpion, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIazhCW0vXw
This reminds me of Scorpions MK2 fatality, although he uses a sword instead of his spear. Scorpion slashes the opponent twice as before, but this time, the opponent is beheaded as well as cut it half. The best part is the end of the fatality, where Scorpion chops the head in half with another slash. Come to think of it, while Scorpion has severed heads in earlier games, this is where he started doing more with them after the beheading.

129. Seeing Double (Leatherface, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wC0SdOqnwo
This is a pretty simple fatality for Leatherface, but what makes it effective is Leatherface impaling the opponent while the chainsaw is switched off. Revving it up while its inside the opponent makes the subsequent cutting in half more effective than revving it up at the start would have been, because this way it feels like an escalation from the first part of the fatality into the second.

128. Split Decision (Noob, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjDISt2R34k
Noob Saibot gets to show off some tricky portal stuff here, hooking in four different places with his scythes before pulling the opponent apart. The interesting thing here is that there are four portals, each with a scythe coming out of it, which could be for a few reasons. Either his arms can come through multiple portals at once, theres a shadow clone or another Noob helping out, or he can hold scythes with his feet as well. Really, any of these explanations would be impressive!

127. Bloody Mess (Skarlet, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgUq-TqTfLI
Remember the Too much iron in your blood scene from X-Men 2? This is like that, if there was no concern for having to stick to a PG13 rating. Its cool to see Skarlet reach the point where she can use her bloodbending in creative ways like this, turning the opponents own body against them.

126. Hooked (Kabal, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6pn2_-9fuQ
Kabal has had enough of gimmicky fatalities, and now hes going for one that looks as nasty as he does. I dont think hes a licensed dentist! Its hard to pick the most brutal looking part, but for me, its between cutting the back of the feet off, or the crunch of bone beginning to crack as Kabal pulls at the opponents teeth.

135. Bubble Burst (Rain, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJVjDSF-49g
Of the fatalities where victims bloat up until they explode, this one is the most brutal, because not only does the opponent explode, but Rain suffocates them first, drowning them in a water bubble around their head. Once thats done, the second half kicks in, prompting a severe case of water intoxication. That the bloating happens so fast makes this feel worse than similar fatalities as well.

134. Helping Hands (Tanya, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSTehi54jKo
Any fatality where a solid object is forced down someones throat is guaranteed to make me wince, and this one is no exception. In this case, it overshadows the rest of the fatality for me in terms of how violent it is, because the rod being removed at the end almost comes as a relief, even if the head and spinal cord are detached along with it. The ghostly hand helping hit down the rod and pull it out is also creative, but the ghostly hands will be less overshadowed in Tanyas other MK1 fatality.

133. Skeleton Rip (Sub Zero, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sFFCidwjv8
Sub Zeros Spine Rip is a Mortal Kombat mainstay, but he can get bored of doing it in every game. Sometimes, he feels like mixing things up. How does he do that? By pulling out the entire skeleton, of course! Its only marginally more anatomically correct than when Kano did it in MK3, but pulling the skeleton out of the opponents back does have the side effect of not leaving their mouth hanging open. The now emptied skin also folds in upon itself, in comparison to Kanos version where it fell flat.

132. Acidic Meal (Reptile, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWj1abIhapQ
This is another case of two old fatalities being combined, but this one works well because the moves complement each other well. Reptiles acid vomit corrodes the flesh from the opponents head, softening it up for his extending tongue to pull off the head and swallow it whole. The only change I would make here would be to add the animation of him rubbing his belly contentedly after his tasty meal. Maybe hes not doing it because he realised he burned off the flesh and the skull isnt as tasty as a result?

131. Mutant Dissection (Baraka, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JTTQKdgUoE
Baraka tops Cyraxs buzz saw by ending not with knocking the body down, causing the pieces he slashed to fall, but instead by stabbing the torso on his blade and pulling it out, holding it aloft on his blade like a trophy. For bonus points, the severed limbs can be seen twitching on the ground after the torso removal, and the gushing blood was also missing from Cyraxs take on this concept.

140. Brutality (Li Mei, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GedxnzUWJYY
This is a throwback to the old school brutalities from back in MK3, where the opponent would explode after a 10 hit combo. Luckily, this is much easier to input than those were! Its also ideal for Fist of the North Star references. I can just imagine Li Mei saying Omae wa mou shindeiru.

139. Five Point Strike (Shujinko, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWygWAb8_I4
From one reference to another, Shujinko has watched Kill Bill and learned how to use the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique. Its fitting that one of Mortal Kombats old masters should use the technique of another old master in fiction. Shujinko isnt the only one to use this technique, as its also Liu Kangs throw. I love the disdainful beard stroke Shujinko ends on.

138. It Takes Guts (Kabal, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0LjBycTWcA
After the opening disembowelling, it seems theres going to be more to this one, but there isnt really. Kabal places his hookswords down, and the opponent falls onto them. That said, the opponent sliding down the hookswords in the background as Kabal poses in the foreground keeps this from being a disappointment. This is one of those occasions where the anticlimax is played for laughs thanks to the timing of the sequence.

137. Reverse Rip (Kintaro, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQdz2DG71vI
This feels slightly reminiscent of Dairous bending over backwards fatality. Like that one, this doesnt go the way I was expecting either, as Kintaro pulls off his opponents arms and head while bending them. Kintaro probably wouldnt be too pleased that he also has the fine motor skills Goro does in being able to pull the head apart into smaller pieces. Dont worry Kintaro, Goro doesnt have flame breath or tiger stripes, he can never take that away from you! Mileenas scream here is one of those ones that make me feel bad for the character on the receiving end of the fatality. Reptile in MK1 is another big one, which makes it all the worse that fatality videos tend to use him because he has green blood to get around demonetisation rules.

136. Buzzkill (Cyrax, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnOhO3IMgUY
While there have been a couple of fatalities before where the opponent gets slashed several times before a final attack causes them to fall apart, what makes this one is the buzz saw Cyrax uses. Its just plain cool, even before taking into account that he transforms his arm into the saw. The saw making its revving noises, that get deeper as it meets with the resistance of the opponents body and cuts through it, is what lifts this above similar takes on this idea. If Cyraxs human costume uses this fatality, the animation is slightly different, as he will have the blade attachment on his arm instead of transforming it, and the saw is larger with a different design.

145. Scissor Split (Sonya, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p10eYUu-45s
While I miss the action replay of the MK4 version, I prefer this version overall because of the opponent struggling and flailing to try and escape. The slow motion on the split is a solid replacement for the action replay as well.

144. Prince of Pain (Goro, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFfVE81n6qc
Goros picked up a thing or two from Jax with the head clap here. However, Goro puts his own spin on it by using his lower arms to hold the opponent in place for the clap. The opponent reacting with horror gets this some points from Jaxs version, as does the additional Goro touch of ripping the body in half by grabbing within the newly vacated neck.

143. Tell em Freddy Sent Ya (Freddy, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8u4Bl5R5lc
Freddy recreates his killing of Glen in the first Nightmare on Elm Street by dragging his opponent down to the NetherRealm. After a few moments, a bloody geyser starts up and doesnt stop for the rest of the fatality. Its very memorable and gory, even if it doesnt quite have the impact it does in the film, where the scene took place in Glens bedroom, enabling the blood to splash all over the walls and ceiling. If Amber Heard did her own Mortal Kombat fatality ranking, I bet this would be number 1!

142. Does it Sting? (Rain, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9gr8B1cUBU
To answer Rains question, yes, I imagine intensely high-pressure water like this does sting. Just the water sword alone would be underwhelming, but what elevates this fatality is the first part of it, creatively using the water to place pressure on the opponents legs until they break. After that, the finishing water sword is a bonus.

141. Nether Gates (Scorpion, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XUy7QB7cd8
Scorpion gives thinking with portals a try, and this is the result. The long drop followed by a short stop would have been enough, but the extra Mortal Kombat touch of the opponent having been flayed at some point is what stops this from being too disturbing like a real hanging would have been (or as real as one involving portals can be anyway). That the flaying takes place off screen adds to the mystery of this one: where do the portals go to? Do we even want to find out?

I'm back after the Christmas break to continue this topic. We're starting up again with the top 150.

150. Royal Execution (Kitana, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYvE6hUNlUk
This fatality combines Kitana cutting people up with her fans, and throwing them as impaling weapons. Kicking the fan at the end instead of throwing it makes it more stylish, as does hitting a bullseye between the opponents eyes, and the emphasis placed on this. The spinning fans holding the torso and head in place above them also makes for a fun visual.

149. Target Practice (Kung Jin, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qivSkTTcA2Y
This fatality would have been somewhere around the middle of the list for most of it, but the ending of the head slipping down the arrows slightly lifts it up. The falling body causing a shock that makes the head slip down further lifts it up further.

148. Whip it Good (Takeda, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXFCBzCOnoc
He whipped it good alright! When I take my dog out for walks, he often gets sticks and branches tangled up in his coat from going into bushes to explore or sniff them, particularly now in damp, blustery weather. Takeda getting his whip tangled up in his opponents internal organs, reminds me of that, although me removing the sticks when we return home isnt nearly as messy, even when theyre at their most tangled.

147. Hellish Dismemberment (Scorpion, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OS1t6Qjx50
Here we have a potential all-time great fatality with an underwhelming ending. Scorpion using his spear to yank off the opponents limbs is great. It takes the idea of his Deadly Alliance fatality, but builds on it by targeting multiple body parts. After the build up, Scorpion simply walking up to the opponent and snapping their neck is a letdown. It would have been better if he used his spear to either take off their head again, or their other leg and cause them to fall.

146. Brake Check (Nitara, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S76sQKz-34
Ripping someones intestines out should be horrifying, but this fatality finds a way to take the concept so far that it becomes funny instead. First, being pulled along by the internal organs, then the whiplash causing the skeleton to come out of their back and break on the ground. The only disappointment is that we dont get to see what Nitara did with the body after the skeleton came out. Maybe she could have thrown it down with her when she landed?

155. Inner Ear Explosion (Shang Tsung, MK2)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf-qAtb-paQ
Shang Tsung warps inside his opponent, but theres no head ripping this time. Hes not in the mood to play around today, and just wants to end the battle quickly, so he uses his powers to make his opponent explode while inside them. This fatality gives us a taste of what Shang Tsung can do when goes all out and doesnt hold himself back for a challenge.

154. Shadow Spin (Noob, MKT)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKYEAu9RWQ0
Noob calls down a shadowy tornado that lifts his opponent up before it kills them. This fatality feels like the precursor to his later portal based fatalities, which gives it points. It also helps that theres a sense of power from this because the bones get thrown in all directions during the spin, and once its over theres absolutely nothing left of the opponent.

153. Scissor Split (Sonya, MK4)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWq_P764-qk
Liu Kang may have done a flashier move similar to this in MK11, but theres something to be said for the simplicity and elegance of this version too. Like a few other MK4 fatalities, the action replay from different angles enhances it.

152. Flowerpot (Kung Lao, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mBMNgEMtDM
Youd think by this point in the series that NetherRealm would start running out of ideas for Kung Lao fatalities. Surely theres only so much you can do with a razor brimmed hat, right? On the contrary, its around here that the creativity moved up to the next level. After the initial beheading, Kung Lao gives a few more slices to the body, so that the whole body collapses upon itself once the head lands. The result is simultaneously gruesome and graceful.

151. Party Pooper (Joker, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAblvmddo9g
Every party has a pooper, thats why we invited you, party pooper, party pooper! This fatality is memorable for being a fun bait and switch, starting out as a Friendship, but turning into a Fatality, because Joker is seemingly incapable of doing anything nice. The Friendship sign also turns into one with Fatality written on it, and in another neat touch, the usual Fatality message doesnt appear on screen at the end, because its already on the sign. The bait and switch even continues into his Friendship, where he tries to kill his opponent, only to be stopped by a well-timed batarang.

Also, Happy Holidays! May you avoid being run over by Santa Kahn and his skeleton reindeer. They're on rental from Halloween Town, so you don't want to damage them.

160. Chest Laser (Hsu Hao, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLUiNcmgFZQ
There are many reasons Hsu Hao is the most hated Mortal Kombat character of all time. Im not sure anyone could tell you what those reasons are at this point, when the hatred has metastasized into He just is, but I can tell you his fatality isnt one of those reasons. The way he rears back and shakes while firing the laser makes it feel really powerful, like hes struggling to contain the recoil, and this is the first fatality in the series where the opponent is cut in half and the top half pulls itself away in a vain attempt at escaping. If there are any based and Red(Dragon)Pilled Hsu Hao enjoyers reading this, make the most of this W, you dont get many! I think the last one was when he joined the Suicide Squad in Jokers MK11 ending, and wasnt the shmuck whos only on the team to demonstrate the bombs arent a bluff.

159. Head Kabob (Jade, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjFBx9O_xPY
Jade usually attacks the opponents body for her fatalities, so this one makes for a change of pace. The staff is used in several different ways, first to impale the head, then as leverage to rip it off. The second part is what makes this fatality so well suited to Jade. Keeping the head on the staff instead of removing it is the cherry on top.

158. Identity Theft (Shang Tsung, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9g-_wz9pQw
Both of Shang Tsungs fatalities in MK9 were borrowed from other characters. While I preferred Jokers fatality to Shang Tsungs version of it, this is superior to Liu Kangs Deception fatality. Intentionally or not, Liu Kangs version goes for comedy between his head appearing on the opponents body and the Liu Kang noises he makes, whereas this version takes the concept more seriously, with the opponent trying to resist Shang Tsungs influence on them, and him not appearing inside of them when the head comes off. Fun fact: Shang Tsung uses this on Stryker in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.

157. Totem Sacrifice (Kotal Kahn, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78tWcco1tWg
Kotal Kahn continues his Aztec influences with this fatality, as he summons a sacrificial altar. That may have taken too long, and Kotals an impatient guy, so hes content to ruthlessly kick the opponents head until it breaks off of the back of the altar. The second part with the giant stone head is a fun climax that adds on to a fatality that could have been a little too basic without it.

156. Kiss of Deceit (Tanya, MK4)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8ZZQI7ViaM
Ive mentioned before that I liked the crunching bone sound effects on Kitanas kiss fatality. This version takes that and builds the whole fatality around it, as Tanya gives her opponent a particularly severe form of boneitis, that causes the sufferer to explode when theyve contorted too much. He may regret that he has boneitis, but the 80s Guy should count himself lucky that he didnt have this strain of the disease.

164. Brain Freeze (Sub Zero, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrX03W3grNY
You know that trope of a kid licking a cold lamppost or similar and getting his tongue frozen on it? Thats the idea behind this fatality. Of course, since this is Mortal Kombat, the body part coming into contact with a frozen surface is bigger than a tongue, and the extrication thereof is a lot messier I like that the brain remains frozen on the ice wall after the face is removed, before Sub Zero breaks the wall at the end.

163. Still Got it (Jax, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKV-HJ6rn1k
This one takes an idea weve seen before, but puts a new spin on the presentation. Taking it into a baseball decoration, complete with the jingle as Jax hits a homer, makes this a lot more memorable than it would have been otherwise.

162. Inner Demon (Sareena, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4TY05Pnbac
Kameos tend to recreate a fatality from an older game, which poses a problem for Sareena, as shes only had one fatality prior to this, and as a GBA exclusive, its debatable whether or not it counts. The problem is solved by giving her something new, and its not bad at all. It takes some inspiration from Heres Johnny! to begin with, but the second half diverges from it when Sareena puts her demonic tail to use. Congratulations Sareena, you are officially, unambiguously out of the No-Fatality Losers Club!

161. Brain Blast (Motaro, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvL5UrG7meI&t=20s
Like Sareena, Motaro didnt have much to work with in terms of older fatalities either, and he gets a new fatality as well. Just shooting with a laser would be underwhelming, but stabbing the opponent in the head first so that the laser charges in their head gives it the extra flashiness it needs.

It's a good thing Cetrion has enough control over her laser not to destroy the planet, as she would be unable to go home otherwise. She would be stuck in space as a giant. I guess she could go in search of another planet to move to, as breathing in the vacuum doesn't seem to be a problem for her.

170. Little Improv (Johnny Cage, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfnVnvX1TZM
This fatality feels realistically violent at first, pounding someones face into concrete repeatedly. If it stayed that way, it would have worked for a more malicious character like Kano. However, Johnny puts a funnier spin on it, gradually slamming faster until he somehow achieves super speed! He must have picked up some pointers from Kabal.

169. Kwan Dao Copter (Sindel, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEXmVebIBeo
Sindels fatalities usually revolve around her sonic scream or her hair, so this makes for a nice change of pace. Juggling the opponent on her weapon, cutting pieces off with each bounce also makes for a fun visual. Now I want to see Seong Mi Na do this in the next Soul Calibur, presumably without the dismemberment.

168. Telekinetic Stretch (Kenshi, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-sZi6NSX1o
Remember Kitanas stretching fatality from MK3? Kenshis here to show her how its done. Using psychic powers to stretch someone until they break apart makes more sense than Kitanas kiss causing stretching, although I did like the crunching bones in that one.

167. Split Decision (Baraka, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJu4WueOpcA
This one is brutal, even by Barakas standards. The framing is done well here, obscuring Barakas blades after he stabs the opponent, which builds up anticipation for what will happen next. Having them burst out into the screen, through the eye sockets is shocking, as is cutting off the front of the upper half.

166. Armed and Dangerous (Darrius, MKD)
165. Armed and Dangerous (Darrius, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ALSAF62gKI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-dGR-HJXHk
Attacking someone using their own body parts gets points from me, and Darrius does it well, smacking people with their own arms. Stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself! The time between Deception and MK1 has given Darrius a chance to practice his skills, as in the new game he only needs two hits to knock his opponents head off, while he needed three before.

176. Whos Next? (Scorpion, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmfrRXwxMLs
This fatality starts the same way as Scorpions Deadly Alliance fatality, but after the head is pulled off, the fatality continues with Scorpion pinning the severed head to a rock behind him. How kind of Tremor to help set up that rock for Scorpion, hes a real bro! Again, Scorpion yelling Get over here! would have elevated this further.

175. Home Run (Shao Kahn, MKD)
174. Home Run (Shao Kahn, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzSVq5FhlkY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAKSkrLg9dQ
Both of these have the same idea of Shao Kahn knocking his opponent into the air, then smacking them with his hammer, with explosive results. Of the two, I prefer the MK9 version because holding his opponent up by the neck then throwing them feels more in-character for the Emperor of Outworld, because it gives a greater sense of his power. That said, the Deception version does have a better scream, along with the entire body exploding, so the gap between them isnt too big.

173. Rip Off (Mileena, MK9)
172. Torso Rip (Kira, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5j0dbI74nU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDreG2xz_dg
Unlike her Black Dragon partner in crime Kobra, who copied his fatality from Kano, Kira had hers copied by Mileena later on. Pinning the opponents feet to the floor so that they cant escape the next attack is an excellent idea, so its easy to see why it was brought back for another character. While Shao Kahns Deception and MK9 due just above saw the MK9 version triumph, this time Deception comes out on top, because of the opponent begging for mercy as Kira approaches to land the finishing blow.

171. Good and Evil (Cetrion, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWxWLriELwA
There must be an Asuras Wrath fan on staff at NetherRealm, as this fatality brings it to mind with Cetrion growing to a planet-dwarfing giant. The first part, where she crushes the opponent in some rocks, isnt great at first, but the second part with the stomp makes you realize that these earlier attacks arent meant to kill the opponent, but to stall them as Cetrion grows. Once shes big enough, Cetrions mouth laser is far too powerful for the weakened opponent to hold back. If Gongen Wyzen had tried that instead of the finger poke of doom, maybe he would have won, but people wouldnt still remember Asuras Wrath a decade after its release in that case, so Im glad he didnt.

180. Fan Opener (Kitana, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMQ2Ga5WHHk
Kitana is one of those characters who doesnt tend to have great fatalities. Many of hers dropped in the 300s and 400s. This fatality may be a relatively basic one, but its well executed and snappy, and for Kitana, simple but effective should be considered a success.

179. Dark Fan-tasy (Kitana, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CuvOQAmHiw
Speaking of Kitana, this fatality is slightly more elaborate than her last one. The highlight for me is Kitana opening her fans while theyre lodged inside her opponent. The initial fan throw is the same as her MK VS DC fatality, so continuing from there is a clever way to step things up in a full-blooded MK game. However, I think either the opening fans should have been more emphasized, or the tornado Kitana summons shouldnt have tossed most of the body off-camera, as this diminishes the subsequent impact after the opening.

178. Boss Fatality (Kronika, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HZSCQ7JIgA
Raiden once said that there are worse fates than death, and this fatality is one of them. Kronika uses her divine powers to pull an Emperor Joker, torturing the opponent by breaking their body apart and reassembling them, only to do it again, and again, and again, and again, and again Like Quan Chis leg beating, this fatality doesnt stop until you press off the screen and return to the menu. I used a 1-hour loop to demonstrate this point. While Quan Chi will eventually tire himself out, Kronika being a goddess of time means that she can keep doing this for all eternity a truly terrifying thought. I can only hope that she eventually gets bored of this offscreen and puts her victim out of their misery.

177. Blown Out (Jacqui Briggs, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m84Uzrjzr0s
Jacqui may have taken after Jax with metallic arms, but unlike her old man, hers are detachable, and have a few extra touches, such as a ranged attack, which she gets real close to demonstrate here. The first part, ripping flesh off the opponents sides, makes the main attack stronger, as while Jacqui could just shoot them, maiming them first so she can shoot into exposed flesh gets a wince in itself, while allowing the eventual gunshot to make a much bigger mess than it would have otherwise. Something that would have improved this would be a heavier sound effect on the gunshot at the end. Its meant to be a shotgun blast at point blank range, so a bigger bang would have made it more impactful.

It is pretty funny that the Fox movies were building up to Sinister for a while, ended before getting to him, and now the MCU might do him instead. What if he shows up in Deadpool 3 first, and does multiverse stuff to jump out of the FoX-Men universe and into the MCU?

I had ideas for how Xavier and Magneto could be done now while taking their ages into account, but it's too dark and out there for the main MCU. It's an episode of What If? at best. To summarise, the two are figureheads of the X-Men and Brotherhood. The leaders of the teams know the truth about their founders, but the other members don't, and the leaders don't know about the other team's founder either. Namely, Magneto has died of old age, and whenever "he" appears in public, it's Mystique disguised as him and using technology to simulate his powers. As for Xavier, Beast has converted Cerebro into a life support system that Xavier is hooked up to at all times, and Beast keeps modifying and upgrading it to keep him alive past his natural lifespan.

185. Nothing But Net (Cyrax, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Acmo3LqX4Fs
Another fatality that takes a move from the characters regular moveset and turns it up to deadly levels. While the net could have simply cut the opponent up immediately, that would prompt questions of why it doesnt work that way in regular gameplay. Having the delayed reaction before they fall apart makes the move more effective and interesting to watch, as well as giving the opponent a few moments to realize theyre doomed.

184. Batter Up (Havik, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q9AtWpq1HM
Havik takes some inspiration from Quan Chi here. He doesnt go ham like Quan Chi, which unfortunately hurts his ranking, but the fact remains that you cant go wrong with attacking your opponent using their own body parts as weapons.

183. Heartbreak (Kano, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBwpQmprVWw
It may just be the classic Heart Rip, but a twist as simple as doing it from behind makes this feel even more sadistic than before, as now the opponent gets to see their heart as its pulled out in front of them, without getting to see Kano preparing the move and mentally bracing themselves for it. This sort of nastiness is perfect for Kano.

182. And the Award Goes To (Johnny Cage, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PN9y6cRnfg
This fatality is perfect for demonstrating Johnnys egotistical, boastful personality. Despite him being the comic relief, you underestimate him at your peril, as he remains a skilled fighter. The NetherRealm era is when Johnny came into his own as a character and grew in popularity beyond someone who was lucky enough to debut in the first game and always had a decent chance of making rosters as a result. This fatality helped contribute to that, and lead to his more elaborate comedic fatalities in later games, so its a significant one in the grand scheme of things.

181. Spear Shot (Scorpion, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL1_qnfqPO4
While Scorpion used his spear as a slashing knife in his MK2 fatality, its surprising that it took until Deadly Alliance for a Get over here! fatality. Luckily, it was worth the wait. If youre going to pull a single body part off with the spear, the head is the best pick. That said, if Scorpion said Get over here! during the fatality, or we got a closer look at the head coming off, that would have helped this rank even higher.

190. Splitter (Liu Kang, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KORdQ8fzoy4
Sonya can rip people in half by doing the splits on them, but Liu Kang decides to go a step further by doing it in midair. Incorporating his flying kick into the fatality gives it some bonus points by making it more dynamic to watch.

189. Direct Current (Raiden, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J8sF79Zza0
Raidens lightning swords here are something new we havent seen from him before. While we have seen swords before, combining them with Raidens lightning powers make this fresher than either of those things individually.

188. Rest in Pieces (Spawn, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHJDI6nNeOw
While Spawns other fatality used the chains for set-up then the cape for the finishing blow, this switches the order around. I prefer this one because the chains moving themselves is used more creatively here, and we also get the green energy at the end that isnt in the other fatality. Also, its fitting that Spawn does this to Joker in the video, since Spawn doesnt like clowns.

187. Axident (General Shao, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKO_nUz-SBU
The first part feels like it would have made for a better fatal blow than Shaos actual fatal blow, which is one of the more underwhelming ones. It being used for his fatality instead is for the best, as then we wouldnt have gotten the second part of Shao pulling the opponent across his axe to cut them in half.

186. Sore Throat (Liu Kang, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQjtIerqeZk
We know from this that Liu Kang is a cultured Road House fan. The slight nudge Liu Kang gives to make the defeated opponent fall over shows a more playful aspect of Liu Kangs personality that we rarely get to see. Come to think of it, Patrick Swayze in Road House might have made a decent guest, although it would have likely been in bad taste as early as MK9, and its far too late now.

Moist Kombat! To be serious for a moment though, I wonder if those squelchy fleshy sound effects in the pursuit of realism contributed to developers who worked on Mortal Kombat 11 suffering from PTSD.

200. Toasty! (Scorpion, MK)
199. Toasty! (Scorpion, MKX)
198. Toasty! (Scorpion, MK9)
197. Toasty! (Scorpion, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRqlwAd1QSM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkpIQ5RV7zg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIyIDaBMn0Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcIQ6HWnf_A
This fatality was quite surprising back in the day. Scorpion seemed to be just a ninja in the original, but his fatality revealed his true fantastical nature, as he took off his mask to reveal the skull beneath and breathed fire. This fatality or variants of it appear in most games, and that combined with the passage of time meaning Scorpion being an undead revenant has become better known means this fatality doesnt have as much impact as it used to. Despite that, it remains a welcome mainstay. The effect of the fire varies between games, as sometimes the opponent will simply be burned, while other times, like in MK1 or MK2, which dropped earlier in the ranking, the opponent explodes instead, so theres a bit of variety in this one as well.

196. Appetizer (Mileena, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL0mFheszdU
Mileenas new Predator mouth is disturbing just to look at, and here she puts it to horrifying use with her most gruesome eating fatality yet. What makes this so nauseating is that she eats the brain straight out of the head and slurps it up. If she removed the brain first, or used her hands to eat it more tidily, this wouldnt be nearly as effective.

195. Melted (Erron Black, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4wFYUo9yww
Last time we saw Erron Black, he just shot his opponent. This time, he shoots them again, but its a bit more inventive than that. Rather than just shooting to kill, he shoots to make sure he wins at the floor is lava. Adding a head stomp on top of that definitely crosses the line into cheating!

194. Sandstorm (Erron Black, MKX)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X4UrWz3ivM
Erron again, with another fancy grenade. Its neat to see a drowning fatality that doesnt use water, and sand is a creative substitute for that. When it comes to things you dont want inside you, sand has to be up there. Its coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere.

193. Kat Food (Kotal Kahn, MK11)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sefjY8_VVJk
Thundercats ho! Since he wasnt around in MK3, Kotal Kahn missed out on getting an animality, but this fatality makes up for it. Getting a thematically appropriate animal immediately makes it better than most of the old ones, which seem to have been chosen via names out of a hat (Reptiles a monkey? Sure, why not.) I think this would have been better without the opening with the scythes, and have Kotal transform at the start. The additional setup seems unnecessary when he could simply open the opponent up with his claws. Who would win in a fight, transformed Kotal or Kazumi Mishima with her real tiger uppercut? Place your bets!

192. The Beast Within (Liu Kang, MK9)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfMVW8tU3tY
Liu Kang turns into a dragon again. Not a lizard, he doesnt do the tongue thing! This version ranks above the original partly because of improved graphics, but moreso because of the dragon now bearing a greater resemblance to the dragon in the logo. Killing your opponent with Mortal Kombat itself is quite a flex.

191. Kick Precision (Li Mei, MKD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32Ab0oPCqcE
Mileena had a similar fatality in Deception where she kicked her sais at the opponent, but this feels like an improved version of it. There were plenty of heads being uppercutted off of people lower down the list, but this one gets points for putting the head to good use and continuing the fatality after the decapitation. With a kick like that, Li Mei would be unbeatable on the soccer pitch!

205. Belly Flop (Bo Rai Cho, MKDA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE4EWhVxGMM
Ha ha, funny fat man who likes to eat food because he is fat go brr! Between Bo Rai Cho taking big theatrical steps back, the screen quaking with each step, and the run up before the belly flop, this fatality sells its comedy value for all its worth.

204. Slice-n-Dice (Jax, MK3)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyZtuKzd6Qs
One day, Jax watched Terminator 2, and thought to himself after seeing the T1000s liquid metal abilities Wouldnt it be great if I could do that? One phone call later, the Special Forces R&D department got on the case, and as a result, Jax has a better Baraka fatality than Baraka.

203. Indigestion (Reptile, MK1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RzsO3oEv04
Theres a tiny bit of a jumpscare here, when the invisible Reptile bites down on the opponent and starts shaking them around before swallowing them. His acid is incorporated as well, with spitting up the softened up body and crushing it. On this evidence going full lizardman was a good idea, as its opened up some animalistic new fatality possibilities for Reptile.

202. Dragon Bite (Liu Kang, MK2)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk7TZfQGCoQ
The original animality. This is a big upgrade from Liu Kangs Didnt Die Tho fatality from the first game, as he gets to join in the bloodshed with everyone else. Not only that, he also gets to do something unique no one else could, at least until MK3. This was reused for Liu Kangs animality in MK3, where its the best one by default, and is brought back in a few later games, where it gets even better.

201. Kompactor (Sektor, MKG)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdM5TtlzShk
Oof on the compactor. Its a 2D sprite in a 3D game, and the sprite doesnt even look as good as the one used in MK3. Other than that, this fatality is pretty solid. The crushing is faster than before, and a lot more explosive. Sometimes, I prefer the more restrained fatalities, but on this occasion, I prefer the more bombastic version.
