That's certainly a long-term goal for Runnerguy. He had to showcase it first and explain it, in the hopes that next time there can be a race.

I guess he's doing a solo run to just... have time to explain it? this really should have been a race, but gdq is really slow to try new ideas for some reason, cough

A significant amount of the commentary is about Bingo races. I get the feeling that's what he really wanted to do. IIRC someone also said that they have been trying to get Bingo into GDQ for quite a long time so maybe solo was the best they could do.

I always felt that bingo should have been accepted quicker than randomizer. At least in bingo you don't have to use a hacked game.

RG 100% wanted this to be a race, yeah. And honestly, I feel like there's no reason it couldn't have been a race and they'd still be able to fit in most, if not all, of the explanation they've done (Maybe not some of the specific tricks I guess?)

Regardless, feels like they've quit massively overexplaning things in the most dry fashion possible since the Shadow Temple segment, which is good.

I actually think Randomizer is potentially easier for an observer to understand starting from zero knowledge. At least in randomizer you actually clear the game you're playing.

The weird thing is they had a race of this exact same thing as part of the HYPE week leading up.

And it was much better because duh these are supposed to be races.

Some bingos have you beating the game after completing the required row/column.

I don't want to get into a fight about bingo vs randomizer; they're both things that have a long history in speedrunning and they both clearly belong at a gdq event in some fashion without having to be gatekept imo

I'm not arguing that one is better than the other just that I would understand why randomizer may have taken a while the be added to gdq (because they are using a hack) than bingo. So it was weird seeing randomizers being showcased first.

Though they do showcased hacked games so I guess the whole point is moot.

Honestly the only thing I want to know re:bingo/randomizer is why lttp rando got to be showcased as a race in its first appearance when oot bingo didn't

Like, if I think about it in that context, Bingo not being a race actually makes zero sense.

For anyone with those post SGDQ blues, ESA runs their own marathon in less than a month:

https://esamarathon.com/schedule

Last years wasn't as good as SGDQ, but it was a lot of fun still. They had an insane 120 star relay race with 120 people for SM64 that was incredible. I don't see anything that fun this year, but it should at least hopefully hold people over until AGDQ 2019 for a little while!

i would, especially when it's a speedrunner or game i care about. would have loved to have been in the crowd during the super mario bros. 1 race, for instance. being in the crowd must have been way more intense than watching it on a computer screen, especially during moments like when one of the runners died. not saying i'd love EVERY run - i don't need to see a run of some game i don't give a crap about in the middle of the night when the hall is nearly empty. but there are some runs i'd definitely love to see in person.

Being there at gdq is special - when I went, I sat in on a bunch of runs, but the best ones I sat in on were the Super Mario Maker/Pepsiman runs and the audience was super hype and enjoyed it so much and it was just a big party. It was really fun to experience. That said, nobody who goes to gdq really spends that much time in the stream room, you're doing other things because there's a lot of fun stuff going on for attendees there

Time to rate the speedruns.

Banjo-Tooie - Any%
7.5/10
Pretty good starting game. The game's tricks were well explained and executed fairly well. The only exception was the large skip, but the set-up was quite long and convoluted for a person that hasn't seen the trick before. The fact that it was rerouted so quickly due to a new glitch was fairly impressive.

They had the stream on two big projector screens facing the crowd. One on either side of the couch. Also, in a spot you couldn't see from the stream shot, there was a TV on the floor in front of the back couch (behind the main couch) which just showed the game display, not the full stream layout.

And yeah, like para said, the main draw of attending the event isn't the stream room itself. There were a few I really enjoyed being in the room - Super Metroid, Mario Maker, SMW, Pokemon, Shantae...a few others. But what I'm really taking away from it is all the people I met. Not just the big popular streamers (I only spoke with them for a few minutes), but all the regular attendees. With any sort of convention like that, I mean if you get 2.5k people with similar interests all in the same place, you're gonna have a good time.

There were a few rooms dedicated to casual gaming which just had dozens of TVs set up. People organized tournaments of various games and just enjoyed watching each other play. One whole room was dedicated to smash bros, with like 20 TVs. There was a room set up with several computers and a projector specifically for playing artemis bridge simulator.

It was just tons of fun overall and I'll definitely be attending again some time.

Today I found several pictures of me with popular streamers who I don't remember talking to. Lol. Hence me saying I drank too much.
