Haley Says Charleston Shooting at Historic Black Church Was Not About Racism

GOP presidential hopeful Nikki Haley on Wednesday rejected the idea that the 2015 Charleston mass shooting at a Black church was about racism.

Appearing on the influential hip-hop morning show The Breakfast Club, Haley told co-host Charlamagne tha God that the national media came in and wanted to define the event.

They wanted to make it about guns, they wanted to make it about racism, they wanted to make it about the death penalty."

Charlamagne then interjected, saying, it was about racism though. Haley then pushed back, saying it wasn't. He then responded, saying it was a racist mass killing.

She then added, "But the point was I strong-armed them and said there will be a time we talk about all that. But right now, we have nine souls we need to put to rest. I didn't have that luxury. Because two days later the killer came out draped in the Confederate flag ... ."

Nine Black parishioners were killed in the shooting at the historical Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., on June 17, 2015.

The shooter, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, joined the congregation for a Bible study session that evening. He told the members that Blacks were taking over the country before opening fire.

An investigation later found a website manifesto published before the shooting that included racial ideas. Roof also posted photos of symbols related to white supremacy, including a Confederate battle flag.

Roof was given nine consecutive life sentences in 2017 after pleading guilty to state murder charges.

Haleys comments are the latest in a string that has received intense blowback regarding her stance on racism and race.

Saturday Night Live instantly started receiving backlash after Nikki Haley made a surprise appearance during the Feb. 3 show.

During a town hall sketch for the cold open, the Republican presidential candidate made a cameo to ask James Austin Johnsons Donald Trump some questions of her own.

Haley started out by asking, Why wont you debate Nikki Haley? in reference to the former president refusing to participate in presidential debates ahead of the 2024 election.

Johnsons Trump responded, Oh my God. Its her, the woman who was in charge of security on Jan. 6. Its Nancy Pelosi.

Are you doing OK, Donald? Haley proceeded to ask. You might need a mental competency test.

You know what, I did, Johnsons Trump said. I took the test and I aced it, OK. Perfect score. They said Im 100 percent mental and, you know, Im confident because Im a man. Thats why a woman should never run our economy. Women are terrible with money.

Ayo Edebiri later popped up at the end of the sketch and directed a question at Haley: I was just curious, what would you say was the main cause of the Civil War? And do you think it starts with an S and ends with a lavery?

Edebiris question was in reference to a December 2023 town hall in New Hampshire, where a voter asked Haley what caused the war. She responded at the time, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run, the freedoms and what people could and couldnt do.

People quickly began to criticize Haley on social media for not mentioning slavery in her response. She ended up walking back her comments during a radio interview on Good Morning New Hampshire, saying, Of course, the Civil War was about slavery.

She continued, What it means to us today is about freedom thats what that was all about. It was about individual freedom, she said. It was about economic freedom. It was about individual rights.

Following Haleys appearance on SNL, some people took to social media to criticize the NBC sketch comedy show for giving her screen time but not other candidates.

NBC declined to comment, but sources told The Hollywood Reporter that NBC will comply with any equal time obligations for other presidential candidates across both parties.

The difference is, sometimes a service game gets closed within a year of launch, then you can't play it.

Yup I saw that a bunch of people were just getting into Midnight Suns recently. That wouldnt have happened if it was a live service game.

Many of them fail. A ton of these games have closed down. I dont want to buy into something that will just close within a few years. Made that mistake with Marvel Heroes (console).

Ambitious life simulator Life by You has been delayed once again, this time by three months.

The game, which is shaping up to be a serious competitor for The Sims 4, was scheduled to be released next month on March 5, but in a statement hot off the press, Paradox Tectonic has confirmed that we'll have to wait a little longer to embark on our new virtual lives.

The new release date for the Early Access version of Life by You is June 4, 2024, with the developer using the additional months to ensure the game meets its and fans' expectations right from the off. This slightly extended development period will allow time to "refine" the visuals, particularly the character models, as well as implement changes and adjustments that will "further improve gameplay."

Going forward, you won't be able to pre-order the life sim on either Steam or Epic Games Store, and the previous pre-order bonuses - the Life Begins Pack and the Nightlife Vibes Pack - will now be available throughout the Early Access period to anyone who purchases the game. Additional information, including details on refunds for those who pre-ordered, can be found on the game's official website.

This is the second time Life by You has been delayed, and while it's undoubtedly disappointing for fans, it's commendable that Paradox is taking the time to get things exactly how it wants rather than rushing the game out the door.
