Lil Nas X's defiant pride is essential to hip-hop -- and the DaBaby debacle is one reason why



Lil Nas X, the 22-year-old juggernaut known by most for "Old Town Road," is in prison. He's in the shower, naked -- save for some humble pixelation -- and twerking, surrounded by eight male backup dancers. And he seems to be having the time of his life.

It's the most provocative moment of the video for the music wunderkind's latest hit single, "Industry Baby," a song that chronicles his rise to the top and raises a giddy middle finger to his naysayers.

The video provoked extreme reactions: some loved it for its catchy, trumpet-heavy tune and the focus on a smirking and glistening Lil Nas X. But others were outraged by the gay, Grammy Award-winning pop star for offending them with the video's homoeroticism. Homophobic backlash erupted on social media -- and it didn't stop there.

In the same week, rapper DaBaby was recorded insulting gay men and sharing misinformation about HIV during a performance at the music festival Rolling Loud. DaBaby's comments evoked an immediate, negative response, with artists like Dua Lipa, Madonna and Elton John chiming in about the inaccuracy and bigotry of his rant.

DaBaby didn't mention Lil Nas X, but rappers including T.I. and Boosie were quick to make a connection to the artist and the "Industry Baby" video, with Boosie going as far to use homophobic slurs and threatening to "beat [Lil Nas X's] ass."

In the face of it all, Lil Nas X did what he does best: double down and tweet.

"i usually don't respond to negativity from my peers. but this had to be said," the rapper said on Twitter, sharing a link to his own music video, letting it speak for itself.

Lil Nas X's unapologetic commitment to his identity has become even more essential in the wake of DaBaby's comments. He's proven he's not successful in spite of his sexuality -- he's successful because he embraces it. In the process,he's carving out a new space for the future of LGBTQ musicians to express themselves without limits.

Lil Nas X, who came out to the world at 20, stands out because he doesn't hide any element of his identity -- not in his music, his social media presence or his live appearances.

There are other contemporary Black musicians who have challenged gender norms or come out while in the spotlight. Frank Ocean sang about a male love interest on his debut album, "Channel Orange," and opened up about his sexuality in 2012. Tyler, the Creator comfortably wears wigs and dresses in performances. Lil Nas X has even thanked them for making it easier for him to be where he is.

But pushing boundaries has always been a staple specific to rap, said Matthew Oware, a sociology professor at the University of Richmond who researches race and gender identities in pop culture.

This goes back to rappers first including explicit language, content and controversial political statements, as heard in "F*** Tha Police" by N.W.A.

"There's still that general sentiment that this type of rapper, a gay, male rapper, isn't representative of masculinity," Oware said. "What Lil Nas X is doing by upping the ante is no different than what we see a stereotypical, heterosexual rapper do by upping the ante in their lyrics."

In both Lil Nas X and DaBaby's videos, the rappers perform shirtless, sing about sex and speak to their successes. But Lil Nas X receives backlash much more often because of what he represents.

"Queerness generally, but Black queerness specifically, still functions as this kind of scarlet letter for many folks who want to work within the media and culture industries," Martin said, adding that rappers are still more likely to cling to hypermasculine values, which makes it hard to accept queer artists.

This shows in the way many rappers defended DaBaby's comments, while the backlash largely came from those outside the genre, Martin said. For a long time, Black queerness specifically was used as a joke in media, Martin said, and it's hard for those deeply immersed in the rap world to break out of that mindset.

On Monday, DaBaby shared a detailed apology for the hurtful comments and the misinformation about HIV/AIDS. His note suggested he needed people to educate him "with kindness."

"As a man who has had to make his own way from very difficult circumstances, having people I know publicly working against me -- knowing that what I needed was education on these topics and guidance -- has been challenging," his apology said.

His apology came after music festivals he was supposed to perform at, including Lollapalooza and the Governors Ball Music Festival, canceled his appearances. Austin City Limits, the iHeartRadio Music Festival and Music Midtown canceled his scheduled appearance shortly thereafter.

"In this particular moment, we have DaBaby saying these really uninformed things about HIV/AIDS -- but because of all of the work that these other artists were able to do, we get to see this swift takedown of DaBaby," Martin said.

Carving out a future for LGBTQ creators in the music industry

The ripples of Lil Nas X's success may not immediately lead to a flood of queer, Black creators into the music industry, Martin and Oware said. Lil Nas X is the first star of his kind -- Black, gay, genre-bending, Gen Z and award-winning.

In addition to promoting his own projects, Lil Nas X uses social media to uplift others, too, retweeting fans and inspiring followers with his open persona.

His music videos and tweets are playful, a perfect example of the kind of humor he has perfected. He's an artist who thrives on provocation and shattering expectations with a complete disregard for the people who don't get it. All those traits, most of all his confidence, are what infuriate his haters -- and endear him to fans.

With time, Lil Nas X's success may make more record companies open to signing on more Black, LGBTQ musicians, Martin said.

"The issue with being the first is often that the first also becomes the last for a really long time," Martin said. "Black queerness has only very recently become really legible as something other than a punchline. There's a lot of work, of undoing that needs to get done. And Lil Nas X might be part of that undoing."

And after "Industry Baby" debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts Monday, let the undoing continue.

Allegedly Threatens to Kill Neighbors

Dr. Alex Khadavi -- a famous cosmetic dermatologist in L.A. -- allegedly went on a homophobic tirade about his neighbors, threatening to "blow their fucking heads off" ... and his rant was captured on security footage.

The video, obtained by TMZ, is from Khadavi's condo complex in West Hollywood, and it shows him approaching the front desk concierge in a hostile manner while ranting about people who live in the building ... referring to them with the homophobic f-word.

He goes on to say he'll shoot these people and later threatens to kill them ... before taking his dog outside. When Khadavi returns to the lobby, he continues yelling at the front desk guy.

According to legal docs ... this incident went down on July 7, and resulted in one of Khadavi's neighbors -- who is a gay man -- filing for a restraining order against Khadavi for himself and his husband.

In the docs, the neighbor claims the concierge told him Khadavi made threats about killing gay people, and specifically asked about him and his husband and implied he was going to kill them.

The concierge also claims that 2 months before this incident ... Khadavi showed him a handgun he was carrying while taking his dog for a walk. The neighbors say they fear for their lives.

This is not the first time Dr. Khadavi has been in the news for something like this. We broke the story ... the 'Million Dollar Listing' guys got a restraining order against him back in 2016, claiming he made death threats and anti-Semitic, homophobic and racist comments.

Khadavi has had many famous celeb clients over the years, including Scott Disick and Lance Bass.

Dominic Clarke is proud to compete as an openly queer Olympian, hoping to increase visibility of LGBTQ athletes.

Trampoline gymnast Dominic Clarke of Australia had a simple reason for coming out as gay a month before the Olympics by becoming a Pride ambassador for Gymnastics New South Wales.

Im very grateful that I have the support and opportunity to compete as my unapologetically queer self on the Olympic stage, Clarke told Outsports.

He identifies as gay and queer. If I can inspire just one other queer athlete to feel more comfortable and safe in their chosen sport, then Ive done my job as a Pride ambassador.

In June, Clarke, 24, was named Pride ambassador along with former Australian gymnast and current coach Mic Whitehouse. In a short Facebook video, Clarke said, Ive been involved in gymnastics for over 20 years as a coach, judge and athlete. As a queer-identifying athlete, pride to me means being myself and promoting equality where I can within my chosen sport.

Clarke was not on our original list of out Olympians but messaged us, saying, Hey! Im another openly queer athlete competing in the Olympics, if you want your numbers up. It shows that despite our extensive research, there are still out Olympians we still dont know about.

Clarke was named Gymnastics Australias Trampoline Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019, but Tokyo will be his first Olympics, and it will be exciting for him to compete as an openly out athlete.

The mens trampoline event will be held Saturday, July 31 (the finals starts at 1:50 a.m. Eastern).

Eleven tourists were struck by lightning while some were taking selfies at a popular tourist destination in the Indian state of Rajasthan, underscoring the deadly effects of the areas monsoon season.

The local tourists were visiting the Amer Fort, built in the late 1500s, in the capital city of Jaipur when lightning struck a nearby watchtower, Reuters reported.

Shankar Lal Saini, a senior disaster management official in Jaipur, told CNN that when the lightning struck the tower, its walls collapsed and buried people under the rubble.

Since the fort is on a hill, when the debris was falling and space reduced, some people also fell into a ditch, he told the outlet.

At least 18 people, including the 11 at the fort, died Sunday night, and about 16 other people were injured in Rajasthan, according to Reuters. Seven of the dead were children, the outlet reported.

Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, neighboring states, also lost citizens because of lightning strikes, with the former reporting the deaths of at least 41 women and children and the latter counting at least seven dead, according to the BBC.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was saddened by the loss of lives and damage caused by the strikes and announced that the state government would provide assistance to those affected and compensation for relatives of the deceased.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted that more severe thunderstorms are on the way with the potential to harm people and livestock.

The rainy season, which occurs between June and September, boosts fatality numbers in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh states because of the large number of people who work in the agricultural or construction sectors or live in areas with little to no tree cover, experts told the BBC.

Lightning-strike deaths have doubled in India since the 1960s, with a possible culprit being climate change, S.D. Pawar, a project director with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, said recently at an awareness workshop on lightning and thunderstorms, Indian news outlet the Federal reported.

More than 1,700 people died of lightning strikes in India between April 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020, the Times of India reported.

Smallville star Allison Mack was sentenced to three years in prison for her role in the cult-like "self-help" organization Nxivm.

Actress Allison Mack has been sentenced to three years in prison for her role in NXIVM. The 38-year-old Smallville star was one of the highest-ranking members of Keith Raniere's cult-like group as she recruited women as sex slaves. She pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and racketeering in 2019.

Mack, best known for playing Chloe Sullivan on the Superman series, appeared in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday. Along with jail time, she will pay a $20,000 fine. NXIVM captured worldwide attention after Raniere and Mack were arrested in 2018. The organization's self-help classes were sought after by billionaires, actors and socialites, but prosecutors say it operated as a criminal enterprise.

Within the group was a secret organization known as "DOS" (short for a Latin phrase that roughly translates as "Master Over Slave Women") led by Raniere and comprised of "masters," like Mack, who recruited and commanded groups of "slaves." Women were coerced into providing "collateral" material damaging information, rights to financial assets or sexually explicit photographs and videos to blackmail them from leaving the society or telling others about its existence. Some women were branded, ordered to engage in sex acts with Raniere, put on starvation diets and physically isolated.

Raniere was sentenced to life in prison after his conviction on sex trafficking and other disturbing charges.

Mack called her involvement with NXIVM "the biggest mistake and greatest regret of my life" and apologized to victims ahead of her sentencing hearing.

"I am sorry I ever exposed you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man," she wrote in a letter filed with the court last week.

On Saturday, the 38-year-old actress released a statement, which was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, that accompanied a letter from her attorneys indicating their sentencing guideline recommendations.

Addressed to "those who have been harmed by my actions," Mack stated, "It is now of paramount importance for me to say, from the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry."

"I threw myself into the teachings of Keith Raniere with everything I had," she added, referring to the founder of Nxivm. "I believed, whole-heartedly, that his mentorship was leading me to a better, more enlightened version of myself. I devoted my loyalty, my resources, and, ultimately, my life to him. This was the biggest mistake and regret of my life."

Mack's note continues by referencing "those harmed by the collateral damage of my destructive choices," with the Smallville actress stating that she will be "spending the rest of her life working to make amends and become a more compassionate woman," per THR.

"I am sorry to those of you that I brought into Nxivm. I am sorry I ever exposed you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man. I am sorry that I encouraged you to use your resources to participate in something that was ultimately so ugly," Mack also wrote. "I do not take lightly the responsibility I have in the lives of those I love and I feel a heavy weight of guilt for having misused your trust, leading you down a negative path."

Mack previously pled guilty to one count of racketeering and one count of racketeering conspiracy in April 2019.

Prosecutors had accused her of recruiting sex slaves for Raniere, 60, and its subgroup, DOS, described as an all-female secret society of "masters" and "slaves" in which women allegedly were forced to be sexually subservient to Raniere.

Mack now faces 15 years to life in prison and is set to be sentenced on June 30 at the Jack B. Weinstein Ceremonial Courtroom in Brooklyn, New York.

Raniere, meanwhile, was sentenced to 120 years in prison in October. The sentencing came two years after authorities took him into custody in Mexico. Raniere was found guilty of federal sex trafficking, extortion, obstruction, and racketeering charges back in June 2019.

A statement from Mack's attorneys asks for the actress to receive no jail time after she recognized that she has "committed grievous wrongs and that she has earned her punishment," according to THR.

The outlet added that their note states that Mack has "publicly denounced Raniere (and her own prior association with Raniere) in the strongest possible terms."

"That is made clear by Ms. Mack's plea allocution, her decision to cooperate completely and fully with the government, and is further underscored in her letter to this Court as well as her efforts to demonstrate her remorse to the public generally and more specifically to those she harmed," her attorneys continued. "There is thus no need to impose an additional sentence of incarceration on Ms. Mack to achieve specific deterrence."

In one case, however, fans of Dancing With the Stars have taken to Reddit to say that they do not approve of Berstens behavior while live streaming.

I always thought Alan was the absolute sweetest and nicest guy, but watching these streams has been a bit eye-opening seeing the profanity and yelling and raging, the user wrote. Is this how he acts in real life? With his dance partners? Scary?

In a sad, upsetting addendum to a fake press release sent out earlier this week, falsely announcing the launch of Pete Davidsons production company, as well as his marriage, TMZ reports that police have taken into custody a woman who entered a Staten Island home owned by the Saturday Night Live cast member on Thursday. Michelle Mootreddy, law enforcement told TMZ, entered Davidsons house through an open side door and took a seat at his kitchen table. While the comedian himself wasnt home, one of his relatives was, and subsequently called 911.

Mootreddy is allegedly the same person who sent out the fake press release on Tuesday to multiple outlets, claiming she and Davidson are launching a production company called Bodega Cats Presents, in addition to being spouses. The press release being circulated this morning about Pete Davidson is completely false, Davidsons attorney told Complex in a statement later that day. Not a word of it is true. Mr. Davidson has no idea who this person is. We are investigating and considering all legal and equitable remedies.

Update, March 19: Per a report from the New York City Police Department, Mootreddy has been charged with criminal trespassing, trespassing, stalking, and harassment.

A pantless Florida Man was arrested yesterday after police spotted him pleasuring himself with a pickle while on a private premise, according to an arrest affidavit.

Responding to a suspicious person call around 4 PM, a cop saw Eric Detiege, 47, lying on his back in front of a townhouse in Oldsmar, a city in the Tampa Bay area.

A Manhattan Beach police officer has been charged with sending sexually explicit messages to a juvenile whom he met when she came to the departments headquarters to report a crime, prosecutors said Wednesday.

John Cheatham, 33, was charged with two counts of contacting a minor for sex and one count of annoying or molesting a child, according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles County district attorneys office.

The teenager and Cheatham met sometime in 2019, when she arrived at Manhattan Beach Police headquarters to report a crime, prosecutors said. From November 2019 to June 2020, Cheatham allegedly sent numerous sexually explicit messages through social media sites, according to the statement.

Instead of providing assistance and support to the victim, this officer is alleged to have abused his authority when she was most vulnerable, Dist. Atty. George Gascn said in a statement.

The girl was attempting to report a sexual assault to police when she first came into contact with Cheatham, according to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case who requested anonymity in order to discuss the matter candidly.

Cheatham was hired in October 2018, according to a post on the Manhattan Beach Police Departments Facebook page. A department spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Cheathams status with the agency. (He is on administrative leave.)

He was arrested by Los Angeles police on Feb. 21 and released on his own recognizance, jail records show. An arraignment has been scheduled for June. Cheathams attorney, Dmitry Gorin, said his client plans to enter a not guilty plea.

He respects the criminal justice process and looks forward to a complete review of all evidence in court. Mr. Cheatham is presumed innocent and is entitled to the same constitutional rights as any criminal defendant. No testimony has been presented in court against him, nor has anyone cross-examined the government witnesses, Gorin said. In short government has not proven any of the charges against him beyond reasonable doubt. We respectfully ask the public to keep an open mind as this case proceeds through the court process.

Jahmil French Dies: Degrassi: The Next Generation Actor was 29



Jahmil French, known for his role as Dave Turner in the hit Canadian series Degrassi: The Next Generation, has died, his representative Gabrielle Kachman confirmed to Deadline. He was 29.

It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of a dear friend and client Jahmil French, Kachman said in a statement. He will be remembered by many for his passion for the arts, his commitment to his craft, and his vibrant personality. A cause of death was not revealed.

Soundtrack creator Joshua Safran first shared the news of Frenchs passing on Twitter.

He also was known for his performance in the film Boost, for which he also received a Canadian Screen Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2018. Hundreds claim decades of abuse by 150 youth center staffers

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) Abuse allegations against New Hampshires state-run youth detention center now span six decades, with 150 staffers during that time accused of physically or sexually harming 230 children at a facility the victims attorney calls a magnet for predators.

Rus Rilee sued the state in January 2020 on behalf of three dozen adults who alleged they were abused as children at the Youth Development Center in Manchester between 1982 and 2014. He now represents 230 clients who say they were abused between 1963 and 2018, when they were ages 7 to 18.

As the number of years, accusers and alleged perpetrators has swelled, so, too, has the sickening nature of the allegations. While details beyond the updated number of accusers and time span arent included in latest court documents, Rilee plans to add his clients accounts to the complaint and described them to The Associated Press:

Of the 150 accused staffers, more than half are accused of sexual abuse, Rilee said. Children were gang raped by counselors, beaten while being raped and forced to sexually abuse each other, he said. Some ended up with sexually transmitted diseases; one ended up pregnant.

Staff members choked children, beat them unconscious, burned them with cigarettes and broke their bones, Rilee said.

Counselors set up fight clubs and forced kids to compete for food. Children were locked in solitary confinement for weeks or months, sometimes shackled or strapped naked to their beds. Kept away from classrooms while their injuries healed, some cant read or write today, he said.

These broken, shattered children were then unleashed into society with no education, no life skills and no ability to meaningfully function, said Rilee.

The Manchester facility, now called the Sununu Youth Services Center after former Gov. John H. Sununu, serves children ordered to a secure institutional setting by the juvenile justice system. The average population last year was just 17 residents overseen by about 90 employees, though it once housed upward of 100 youths and employed a larger staff.

Joe Ribsam, director of the state Division for Children, Youth and Families, said the agency continues to cooperate with a broad criminal investigation into the center launched by the attorney generals office in 2019. He did not comment on the new allegations.

The facilitys policies and systems that protect the youth receiving care include full compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act and security cameras throughout the facility to provide additional sets of eyes on staff and student interactions, Ribsam said in a written statement.

Its unclear how far up the chain of command knowledge of the alleged abuse traveled over the years. But the lawsuit alleges that some supervisors were themselves abusers and that other staffers looked the other way.

The systemic, governmental child abuse that occurred was allowed to occur because there wasnt sufficient oversight, and the state was institutionally negligent in their hiring, training, supervision and retention polices, Rilee said. Its pretty clear to me that this facility was a magnet for predators.

Rilee said most of his clients have spoken to state police as part of the criminal investigation, including one man who spent two years at the facility in the late 2000s. The man alleges that he was sexually assaulted by two staffers more than half a dozen times, was beaten by six staff members at once and often locked in his room for a week at a time. Now 28, he said he has been in and out of the criminal justice system most of his life, and has struggled with depression, strained relationships and a warped sense of socially acceptable behavior.

The kids that dont have it good in there, we dont come out good, he said. It takes a part of you. The worthlessness you feel afterwards. Am I good enough for people? Am I good enough for myself?

Another man, now 29, spent more than a year at the center starting in 2007. He alleges he was beaten several times and sexually assaulted by three different staff members dozens of times, including a sexual assault that he says was recorded on a perpetrators cell phone. After years of substance abuse, he has been clean for seven months, but nightmares and other PTSD symptoms continue.

I relive it a lot. Every night, every other night, it never stops, he said.

Neither of them have any records of their time at the center, though they said they have requested them and gave state police officers who interviewed them permission to do the same.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been victims of sexual assault, unless they go public, like the lawsuits lead plaintiff, David Meehan.

Meehan, 39, went to police in 2017 with allegations of abuse from the 1990s. In July 2019, two of his former counselors were charged with 82 counts of rape, and the attorney generals office launched a broader criminal investigation into the centers operations and employees from 1990 to 2000. Those charges were dropped last March, when the office announced it was devoting an unprecedented allocation of resources to an expanded investigation, including assigning 10 state police troopers to a task force.

Meanwhile, the state has been granted several extensions in responding to the lawsuit, and as recently as January, said in court documents that the parties were in discussions aimed at narrowing or resolving the matters in issue in this case.

But earlier this month, the state filed a motion to dismiss the case, in part because it said the case didnt meet the criteria for a class action suit.

The attorney generals office declined to comment on the new allegations or the lawsuit.

There are dedicated prosecutors in the Attorney Generals Office as well as investigators from New Hampshire State Police who are working daily on this investigation, acting Attorney General Jane Young said in a written statement. The investigation will follow the evidence wherever it leads.

In a recent interview, Meehan said he has been frustrated by the pace of the legal process but understands it will take time. He said he has grown stronger every day, in part because he has inspired others to come forward, including the two who spoke to the AP.

Its heartwarming in a way to know that I helped these other people find the strength to be able to speak the truth about their experience, he said. But at the same time, it hurts in a way that I cant explain, knowing that so many other people were exposed to the same types of things that I was.

Meehan said he has no regrets about speaking out.

I cant allow the abuse that I endured to be what destroys my life anymore, he said.

Furious crowd forces armed police officers to release men arrested for kissing on a beach

Parents and locals started chanting "I'm gay!" and "I'm gay too!" in solidarity with the men as they surrounded the cops.

After two men were arrested for kissing on a public beach in Mexico, a crowd of furious sunbathers surrounded the heavily armed cops and demanded their release.

As parents and locals started chanting Im gay! and Im gay too! in solidarity with the men, the officers let the men go.

Video of the incident has skyrocketed around the world and Mexican LGBTQ groups are demanding authorities take action. The video alleges the police were violent and said the men were being arrested for kissing in front of parents and children and they cannot be seeing this.

Maritza Escalante can be heard arguing with the officers, saying they were not committing a crime and they kissed like any other couple.

After the confrontation, local police issued a statement saying the men were being arrested for immoral acts and sexual erotic demonstrations, on the road or public places. They claimed the men were having oral sex and that one of the men pictured in the video riled up the crowd by claiming it was discrimination.

No one on the beach saw the alleged sexual contact, but police say a citizen complaint spurred the arrests. Two officers reportedly saw the men kiss and returned with two ATVs and several armed officers.
