It's not the games that most people talk about on here and places like Reddit. It's games like Fortnite. The data shows that most gamers play a game like Fortnite or a sports game for most of the year and maybe will be briefly distracted by something else before going back to it.

But the issue is... it's fortnite. It's not fortnite plus 17 other live service games. There's only so much room for GaaS games at the top, and every one that fails is a hideously expensive boondoggle.

So yeah, if you win, you print money. As seen by GTA Online. But if you don't... well... there's a long list of huge money losers

The difference is, sometimes a service game gets closed within a year of launch, then you can't play it.

Yup I saw that a bunch of people were just getting into Midnight Suns recently. That wouldnt have happened if it was a live service game.

They receive continual content updates, often have significant microtransaction presence as well as other common live service features like dailies / timed events, etc etc. In what way are they not live service games?

The concept is wildly considered to be originally spawned by world of warcraft. the two are extremely intertwined

I will continue to not play any games as a service or buy DLC/cosmetic garbage. Sucks the industry is still moving that way, but I have such a backlog that no games could ever release again and I'd be fine.

I think it's more that it is the first one to really get massive notice while actually intentionally embracing that sort of live service model as an intentional planned thing. since yeah I'm aware it's not the first MMO, I was playing runescape before WoW even existed but it's undeniable that it massively changed the landscape of the genre and of ongoing games as a whole.

Personally I think this is stretching the definition a little too far, since basically all games nowadays are released broken and need some sort of bugfix patch. I think where I'd want to draw the line is something like "Does the developer plan to offer a continual trickle of new content, balance patches, maybe even events? And thus continue transforming the game to keep it new?" (in contrast to creating a new distinct game). So something that receives a few bugfixes, or maybe one piece of DLC at some point down the line, is not live service. But anything with regular content patches, expansions, DLC packs, and so on almost certainly is

MMOs are definitely live service, why is that even a debate lol. Even if you apply all the mental gymnastics in the world they still has most of the same issues that make live service games unpopular. In some cases even worse when you have to pay to even log in.
