Or maybe Mommy and Daddy cornered her in her room and said “you’re gonna get in this dress and give this letter to Maria, damn it!” Or if she’s working alone, she’s been doing it from the get-go, i.e. episodes 1 and 2. And if the walrus is doing the autopsies, she might not have been dead.

We had to go back in the text to reread that line, which requires pausing and looking at the character profiles. It was on Kumasawa by default for some reason, to which she said “Also, I will laugh my ass off if it’s secretly been Kumasawa all along. She gets no regard in any of my crazy paranoid theories. She’s just kinda there. I view her the same way Kinzo does: you are a sheep to slaughter.”
K (thinking): Well Kumasawa sorta kinda does something this episode! A fantasy scene, but a pretty cool one nonetheless.

Day 12 (9/9/2017)

I was telling Arria how so many previous scenes mean something different to me. She said that it makes her ‘wig out’ because (in her words): “you’ll be writing two paragraphs after we look at a flower pot! Like, what am I missing here!?” She then went back to Ep 2’s aquarium scene. “I can’t wait until I watch that again and I’ll be able to see the big mystery in this shit! Apparently this is a deep fucking scene and it just pisses me off!” (Note: I never specifically said the stuff at the aquarium was deep or mysterious. I think she just picked that because it’s so innocuous and innocent and the least likely scene that she’d expect to be deep). She then goes off about how George and Shannon need to just fuck already. “George just needs to bend her over the fish tank and go to town!” Then she brought out the old line about becoming Jessica and wanting to trap George and Shannon in a closet with a condom and instruction manual. “And afterwards, we’re putting Jessica in the same closet with Kanon and a instruction manual. Hopefully the manual includes upholstery, because it might get uncomfortable otherwise!”

Raka asked who else Arria wanted to see live. I told her that I predicted Kyrie, and she pointed at me. “Yes! I want those two (Kyrie and Rudolf) to live, damn it! You know who else I want to see live for once just to see him get punched in the throat? Fucking Krauss.”

We are back to the scene where the adults interrogate Maria at dinner over who gave her the letter

George: There are 18 people on the island… maybe 19.

Jessica mentions that someone could have gotten Shannon to put on a dress and get Maria to play along with the story. Arria now suggests that it could have been Jessica herself, since she’s already busty and female.

I don't know what the LARP was gonna be about, actually. Arria just told me that she wanted me to come along and so I was. It got cancelled because it needed a certain number of people and apparently Arria was the only one to RSVP for certain. Everyone else was wishy-washy on the idea and said that they "might show up." Also, my hometown has been plagued by smoke from wildfires lately and I think some people were afraid it would be an outdoor LARP, and no one wants to go outdoors in this smoke.

Ugh, I don't know how things are in Indonesia, but it pretty much sucks everywhere in the US right now. If you're not affected by hurricanes, you're affected by wildfires.

I think Arria is 100% serious with that pairing. She generally likes older men and she's shown a lot of interest in Genji since the beginning. I'm still waiting for the moment where she sees Genji's surname and it clicks that he is essentially Ronove. As for Gohda, she flip-flops a lot, and she even called herself out on it when we played last. I think she believes he has potential in yaoi situations, especially as a chef. She likes reading about delicious food. Hmm... if you do write something for her involving Gohda, make sure to include food. :P

I spent yesterday with Arria. We were originally gonna go to a LARP, but it was cancelled. Thus, we turned it into a normal day of anime watching and Umineko reading. We got to a line about Battler being weak to Beatrice because she has XX chromosomes and that prompted Arria to joke about Beatrice "originally being a man". I just laughed along with her while internally cursing her for being so close.

Raka, I told her about the VN that you wrote a route of and she was totally on board with reading it. She saw some screenshots on Steam, and she found a character that she likes based on his looks. She also really liked the screenshot of a demonic horse pulling a carriage. That's Arria for you. Just show her some pretty men and horses, and she'll read anything! XD

Although... now that she knows you're a writer, she really is counting on you to write a yaoi fic by the time we're done. :P I asked her if she had a pairing in mind, and she wondered if there was any GohdaxGenji. I told her that I wasn't familiar with anything of those two, but I don't usually go out of my way to find yaoi either. So uhh... if you know of anything with those two, it would please her to have it. Alternatively, she would appreciate having you write something.

And I showed her the pic you edited of walrus-Nanjo in Beatrice's portrait and sure enough, she laughed her ass off.

Probably aired on Nickelodeon, but I also watched Disney and CN. Would have aired sometime between 94-2000. What I remember is the main character wants to get something which you can only get by collecting and mailing in a bunch of cereal box tops. For some reason the character thinks he has to eat all the cereal he buys and he gets sick of it soon. I think some other character later points out that he doesn't have to eat the cereal. Just tear off the box tops and send them in.

Yeah, there are a lot of emotions in Sayo during all this. I said 'angry' but I certainly didn't want to disparage her other feelings. But you can't deny that there's anger. No one sets up a bomb and murder plot without anger... or maybe just insanity. But we know Sayo's mental state, and while she is a lot of things, I wouldn't say she's literally insane.

Knowing that Sayo was the author of Ep 1 and 2, I tried to look for things in the narrative that would display that. I can't think of specific examples off the top of my head, but I think I mentioned a few times that characters seem to act different than in Battler's episodes.

So recently Arria has been watching Little Witch Academia (I watched it as it aired) and she pointed out that the founding witch of Diana's family was named Beatrice (I think it was actually Beatrix, but same difference) and it got me wondering... is there some Japanese meme/joke that witches should be named Beatrice? We got the one from Umineko, LWA, and Re: Zero. One is fine, two is a coincidence, but three makes me think that something is up.

From my perspective, I can see now where Shannon was dead serious about being disappointed that Battler didn’t remember his promise. He brushes it off like it was a silly joke (and to him as a 12 year old, it probably was), and I wonder if it makes Shannon even angrier that he’s disregarding her feelings in such a condescending manner. Of course, she can’t show that anger here. That emotion is for Beatrice to display later.

I think she mentioned Rudolf only because he was in that scene, but I know she likes Kyrie a lot, but so far she's always died in the first twilight. I felt the same way during my first readthrough. I was thinking 'Kyrie has to live longer in this game since she died right away in the last two games!'

I was reading the Umineko thread on /jp/ when someone said something that made me appreciate Arria a little more. This person was complaining about how a youtuber was ignoring the emotional aspect of Umineko and trying to solve the mysteries by pure logic. It made me realize that Arria definitely has an emotional investment in the series and she's acknowledging the emotions of the characters.

A: The mental images in my head right now range from Eva grabbing a knife and shoving it under the soft spot of his chin, or her bashing his head against the table until it turns to bloody pulp.

This talk about gender discrimination brings up a big discussion about ethics. Arria is insane, but I knew that already. She gets... very heated up, to put it lightly. You can probably tell from her responses to things above that this scene is really pushing all her wrong buttons.

A: There’s a part of me that feels like she’s been torturing him since our last game session. Like, she’s been playing with him for several weeks now. And that makes me feel kinda bad

We get some red truth right away. Belphegor says that none of the doors on Rokkenjima have a crack through which a key can be slipped through.
A: Oh goodie. We get the red bullshit early.

One of them calls Leviathan “Levia-nee” and Arria found it so cute she did the stereotypical fangirl squee with her hands in fists.

She wondered if perhaps the red truth wasn’t legit because the stakes said it instead of Beatrice. I don’t know where the game specifies who can speak the red truth, but I told her that other people use the red and it’s legitimate. I didn’t mention that you can’t lie, because I want her to experience that for herself

Beatrice: This bliss is certainly amusing!
A: I feel like Beatrice is sitting in a chair with her hand between her legs while she’s talking here.
Beatrice: What kind of murder will unfold on our next game board?
A: I’ll take snuff film for 500, Alex.

I wonder if Arria will like Lambda by the end. She's definitely one of my surprise favorites. Like, not super top tier or anything but definitely in the top 10.

No idea if she's gonna grow to like Lambda. If she does, I suspect it will be way down the line. I could see her starting to like Lambda near the end when she fights Bern.

Nanjo making it to the Top 5 because he's a walrus is amazing. He tends to lose even more focus as the episodes go by though, so we'll see. Though he played a big part in EP3 so there's that to look forward to.

Eh, even now that I've played all 8 Episodes it's pretty hard to justify putting any of them too far over the others. Mammon might have some advantage since she's Ange's best friend, Lucifer plays the bullied older sister/leader part well and I like Belphegor's attitude, but that's about it. The rest can go in any order.

This is pretty solid place to start. Kinzo theory was pretty popular early on, IIRC? There's definitely merit there. He can definitely tell Genji to do whatever he wants, then the other servants to slightly lesser extent, and tell Arria that if Kinzo were the culprit he could make up any autopsy report and tape it to Nanjo's back since he's just an oblivious walrus.

Wait, what? So it's just not her nickname to use for privacy reasons? >_<

Also, I approve of her liking 'Beatrice' (Virgilia). She's just so mellow and nice...most of the time.

I think most people would agree with the sentiment that all the stakes are similar enough to be grouped as one. However with Arria, she can like or dislike someone based on something as small as one line, one scene, or even their clothes. Like, she started hating Lambda based solely on a facial expression and she liked Virgilia right away based on her dress. I believe Arria will have opinions on the sisters once she's seen them all in action. She's indicated to me already that she likes Beelzebub the best so far based on her drill hair and the fact that she's Gluttony, which is her favorite sin (I'm not sure why).

Lol, I will share with her what you said about a note on the walrus's back. Expect that to become her new headcanon for all future autopsies. :P

Yeah, the whole "Arria" thing is complicated. She came up with the name in 8th grade, so literally during her chuunibyou period. She used it for role-playing games (the pen and paper type, like DnD) and later in video games. She would write stories, sometimes by herself and sometimes with another friend of ours (the one we're gonna have dress like Eva) and the character sorta became another entity within her. It's nothing so dramatic as to imply she has MPD or DID. Just a fun thing she did and has kept for all these years. The reason I asked her that question was because I felt the relationship between Eva and Evatrice is similar to that of my friend and the "Arria" persona. Also I wanted to see what would happen if I prompted her to do some self-introspection. :)

Well she hasn't yet hit upon either of the two big twists yet. She keeps trying to pin things on Kinzo because he has never left his room.

Ihihi, HFCS is my poison of choice. Love me some coke. I can't imagine what wine would taste like with that in it, though... but I'm not a wine drinker. I prefer spirits and flavored beers.

Lol yeah, I caught the whole 'get in the kitchen and make me a sandwich' the first time. Is that even a joke in Japan? In any case, despite that I'm a woman and I hate it when men use it seriously, in this setting it's just funny. Especially since it's fucking Battler saying it to the woman who, just a scene ago, had him naked and on a chain lol.

That censored word... well, I didn't realize it was as bad as it was. According to google, it's a slang term for a woman's hooha, but I've literally never heard it called that. Every time I've used the word, or heard the word being used, it was just to make fun of someone being dumb. It starts and ends with a 't'

I don't think I had particularly strong feelings for Bern or Lambda until Chiru. But no, they haven't flirted yet. The scene Arria saw was just Lambda telling Beatrice/the audience that she wants to be entertained and to not disappoint her. Bern leaves fairly quickly and Lambda has a moment to talk to us (the audience) alone. She mentioned being super-paper, but when that line came, Arria was just too disgusted with her already to care.

We hear the child-Beatrice talking a little bit, and Arria thinks she recognizes the voice. I have no idea if this is Sayaka Ohara or a different VA, but I’m assuming it IS Sayaka. I said something about how this is someone you’ve heard. Not just in Umineko, if it is her, but we just finished watching some episodes of Made in Abyss with Ozen, voiced by Sayaka.

Anyway, Arria then came up with the truth of Virgilia here.
A: Or maybe, to add to the bullshit above, this is a previous Beatrice. Maybe Beatrice is just a title, and we’re getting the perspective of the blonde girl we all know and love.

Child-Beatrice: Grandpa will scold me!
A: I don’t think this is one of Kinzo’s grandkids. I don’t think he would just ‘scold’ her. His approach to discipline is more of ‘beat them with a sword or a bamboo pole’
Virgilia: imagining how he’ll punish you scares even me

There was a weird run on sentence about Kinzo’s anger making even ‘fallen angels in hell quiver’ and I think Arria’s brain died trying to read it. I just summarized it as “Kinzo can get so mad that even demons are scared of him.”
A: That would have been handy in the last two episodes!

A: I’m not even sure this is real. Like, this is Maria grown up writing an anime about the story she heard about Rokkenjima. It’s the way she thought about it. The witches are nice and benevolent as opposed to the “Pierce the (insert body part) and kill!” witches

First of all, I wanted to ask her

K: What or who is “Arria” to you?
A: She is the mirror through which I see the world. That’s the best and most poetic way I’ve had to describe it. Her behavior is a pretty accurate predictor of how I will act in a situation. It’s different because she can do things I can’t physically and magically, but the idea is the same. For instance, the best way to get Arria to do something? The same way you get me to do something: say I can’t do it. Or say that I’m going to offend something. I imagine how Arria would react to a situation, and that’s how I would do it.
A: Also, she’s only one of many. The most powerful and well-fleshed out. She is one of many hats I pull out when the time calls for it. Also, why are you asking me this?
K: You’ll see. It might affect how you see a character that we’re about to meet.

K: Alright, episode 3. I like ep 3. Everyone likes ep 3. We’re in for some fun times.

We see Beatrice’s portrait in the bit where it says ‘this is a work of fiction yadda yadda’

She assumes the intro scene here is Battler’s PoV and it talks about this person wanting to play with a fragile vase.

She is so confused right now.
A: Okay, there are like 4 feelings right now. First of all, why do I get the feeling that before this, she was at a suffragette rally? Second of all, minus the suffragette sash, I want that dress. That is a gorgeous fucking dress. Third, if you are the real Beatrice, I don’t know if this explains everything or makes everything more confusing. Like, even something like going to the bathroom is going to be more complicated now. Fourth, if you AREN’T the real Beatrice and just using her name to mess with people… dayum. You are going to either die horribly, or you she’ll find it funny. Or I guess there’s another option… this IS Beatrice in a 1910s suffragette outfit. Also can we add her to the character ranking right away? She would rank pretty high based on her outfit alone.
