We get to the epitaph solving part! Huzzah! We learn Kinzos homeland was Taiwan, and I get to reveal that Arrias computer has a Made In Taiwan sticker on it that has been bothering me THIS ENTIRE GAME and how I always wanted to say something snarky like the answer is right in front of you.

At the end of the chapter, theres a moment where Shannon is like what was the new servants name? Oh yes, its and me and Arria BOTH felt like it was like in RPGs where a name-entry screen is about to pop up. Like, we felt it in our HEARTS that we were about to name Kanon. xD

The portrait of Beatrice goes up and the epitaph is revealed
Natsuhi: Father, what is this?
A: Part of me wishes Natsuhi had phrased this as Father, what the fuck is this?

Eva reads the epitaph and immediately thinks Man, Kinzo really doesnt want Krauss to be the successor.
A: I do love how EVERYONE has come to that conclusion. Everyone hates Krauss. Even Krauss.

Rosa shows Maria the epitaph, who gets really excited about reviving Beato
A: Id feel better about this scene if I felt for a single moment that Rosas reaction would be You gave it your best, sweetie.
Scene cuts out after Maria is finished talking

The Mammon-maid is right several times in a row. She says the quiet ones always finish first in reference to getting boyfriends, and then later says not to try and guess what a guy is thinking.

George says hes happy for Battler forging his own path in life.
A: I love how every time you appear, you just make it worse.

As time passes, Shannons memory of the event gets twisted. First it was Battler on a white horse, now its but only when you are resolved to live life for me.

Kyrie says Battler wrote a letter to everyone. Shannon gets hopeful but yeah. Then afterwards, George gives Shannon the empty envelopes.
A: Which explains why Beatrice announces herself with a letter!

Clair says she cant hate Battler for breaking the promise, when to him, it was never a promise to begin with. It was just him being a stupid teenager and joking around. :(

Wills line Im not the main character in this story. You are. reminded Arria of the movie Sucker Punch, which I only know about because she has referenced it before while playing Umineko lol.

Will says Beatrices misfortune occurred when she solved the epitaphs riddle.

We flashback to Rudolf telling Krauss and Natsuhi about Battler leaving, and Natsuhi says she sympathizes with Battler.

A: If they only had polyamory, this wouldnt be a problem! Like, the amount of stupidity and toxic monogamy it takes to get to this point is just. sad. And Battler is actually Kyries son, after all, so this is even extra fucked!

Its been a while since we played! We open up with Far playing, though it quickly switches to a happier song lol.

We go into a flashback of Battler talking about Shannons breasts and George talking about how Shannon has plenty of womanly charm.
A: This sure is a lot darker now that I know what she went through!

Shannon talked about how she first heard the cousins talking about girls and boys, and Battler says she was the most interested and absorbed
A: Because this was the first time she was like waaaait wtf is going on with me?

Then Shannon and Battler found out the other reads mystery novels and whee~ friendship~

Shannon and Battler talk about why the why dunnit is so important. Its the heart of the story. Arria agrees with that sentiment.

Shannon said she hates clocks because she wants to keep talking to Battler, but Arria jumped on that lol
A: Me too! And only because of this fucking game! I bet you hate clocks because of the same one I hate. The one that ticks during the tense moments

Back in time to a previous family conference. We see the background where the portrait will be

A: This is also a way of making sure Sayo never figures out what people look like beneath their clothes.

A: So when does this bitch sleep? If shes Shannon by day and Beatrice at night? Actually, that explains a few things. Id probably dress in a Victorian dress and cackle in a hurricane if I went without sleep for a few years.

We see Shannon working with Genji and Natsuhi around. Natsuhi comments that she is worried about Eva complaining about the chandelier not being clean
A: I love how Eva is Natsuhis mortal enemy here. Like, her gauge for is the room clean enough? is will that bitch complain?

Game: Natsuhi was more high-strung and stressed than usual.

Clairtrice and Shannon have an elegant tea party
A: Its sad. The servant who is used to serving at tea parties, but had never eaten or drank at one. This is the sort of fantasy she would have.

Shannon mentions how this feels like a Sunday where I am just wrapped in my blanket in bed.
A: I almost missed that throwaway line. This is exactly what is happening, isnt it?
K: Most likely. This was almost exactly how she phrased it in Ep 4 when she was in the prison.

Clairtrice mentions Shannon going back to a colorless world where shes worked to the bone
A: Theres a darker take on this. Shannon contemplating suicide.
Clair: This place is paradise. Eternal.
A: Youre not helping the commit suicide to escape eternal drudgery as a servant angle.

K: I dont believe so. I think this is just showing Sayos turning point from good maid to fuck you for leaving your keys. Now you get punished.
Our discussion gets a little deeper, and I mention how this is also somewhat Uminekos goal. Is Sayo delusional or it this just symbolic? Its up to us, the reader, to decide. I told Arria that while I perceive this scene as symbolic of Sayos turning point, she can interpret it either way. This then went into a long rant about how she did almost this exact thing with keys at a place she used to work.

Sayo talks about how she decided Beatrices minions are golden butterflies
A: Weve been putting the cart before the horse. We thought the spider webs were used because Beatrice used butterflies. Actually Beatrices butterflies are because Sayo needed Beatrices minions to be something weak to spiders.

Sayo says she wants to become a witch. Shannon is surprised and perplexed
A: If this werent happening in Sayos head, this would be such a confusing conversation.
A: Also power. Thats all Sayo wants.
A: Another point to Shannon not being real. She doesnt have the anti-magic toxin.

Sayo creates the Clair-witch while Gaap is relegated to being another witch without a name
A: This really does sound like a small child playing make-believe.

Sayo mentally argues with Gaap about not stealing maid-Beelzebubs key, but Gaap wins over and Sayo becomes Gaap/Gaap becomes Sayo
A: Talk about bleed out. When you take on characteristics of your characters. Sometimes with a Psychology PhD should read Umineko. Thats a Lets Play I would read/watch.

On stage, they discuss how Sayo would borrow mystery novels from the school library and talk to Kumasawa about them whod always know the answer, but would just smile and nod to Sayos theories
A: This sums up our entire friendship for the last three years.

And then Gaap talks about And Then There Were None, which Arria plans to read very soon and is worried about getting even a little bit spoiled so were stopping here for tonight. xD

Today I asked Arria if she read And Then There Were None, which she hadnt yet, it was only last week when we last played Umineko. But she said shes made her peace with whatever Umineko throws at her regarding potential spoilers
The first line we get to is Shannon about to spoil the story to Sayo, and Sayo tells her not to do it.
K: Dont you just hate it when you imaginary friends spoil books for you

The rest of this scene is a lot of discussion about how Sayo learned to love mystery novels.
A: I feel like this is Ryukishi elbowing us and saying You made it this far into my bullshit, you must like mystery novels too, mikos!

When do the maids graduate from Rokkenjima?
Game: That trapped feeling and money sat on opposite sides of the scale to determine graduation
A: I feel called out right now!

The older maids leave, but Shannon remains
A: Thats a nice nod to how shes imaginary, in case anyone wasnt sure yet

Were now in the chapter where Sayo lost a tiny broom, and she talks about how things go missing. Arria catches on pretty quickly: Gaap

They talk about ghost stories, and how many work places have them. Arria and I talk about how if our work place had a ghost story, that would be me. *I* am the ghost/witch who haunts the blood bank.

The other maids have Sayo look for the brush in the creepy chapel and then leave.
A: I feel like this is just bullying?

A: Is this why Gaap is dressed like a whore? Like, weve seen her put the other stake-maids in whore-like outfits. If this is just the maids fucking with her, its just those whores
A: Does this also mean Gaap represents his lost balls?
I give Arria a look of wtf and shame on you

Sayo says some religious stuff taught to her by the director of the Fukuin House. Stuff like how you cant see God with your eyes but you have to use your heart.
A: This is the best line about describing religion Ive ever seen.

Kumasawa shows Sayo her trick about returning objects to their home. Its so damn cute. I showed Arria a comic that went with it.

Gaap mentions Sanon again, which made Arria think she mightve been referring to Shannon.
K: No, its Satan.
A: OH!
K: And my headcanon is that this is why Shannon had to go with sha instead of sa, because there was already a Sanon working there.

A: This game is enough to make a therapist need therapy. Like, just a lot to unpack. Im less thinking Ryukishi wrote this while at a desk and more that he wrote it in his blood in his cell when he managed to get his arms out of the straight jacket.

Nanjo and Genji basically defends Kinzos horrible life choices.

Interesting write ups, Mega Mana. My experience with Higurashi was only watching the anime and not realizing it was a mystery to be solved. I just kicked back and watched it unfold. I feel like you could keep going. You probably know enough to solve some of the mysteries on your own. I don't remember some of the smaller mysteries myself; it's been a hot minute since I watched the anime and I don't even remember if some of those points were made in the anime.

My name being an anagram of Rika is... err... coincidental, since I picked the name "Kira" as my internet/alternate persona name before I ever watched Higurashi lol (and Death Note for that matter, but it did sorta cement my use of that name). But it's a coincidence I play up, on occasion, especially when you consider my real name.

Arria and I are still vampire hunters some night. Sometimes we are the witches who rule the blood bank's night. xD

We are give the name Yasu for the first time. Ive sorta taken to referring to Sayo as just Sayo, so I probably wont use the name Yasu as often.

We get to the stage and meet Clairvaux of Bernard. Arria is immediately analyzing her appearance. Shes found pieces of Shannon, Beatrice, and the Love Demons. Not much Kanon. She notes she does not have the one-winged eagle. Arria opens the profile where it says she has no personality. Ah! Theres Kanon!

We get into the book portion of the story. The stake maids are here.
Arria just laughs when she sees meido Lucifer.
A: And of course, in Sayos imagination, the maids who bossed over her became the furniture/slaves she used to kill other people.

A: Imagine a timeline where Sayo was a real screw-up. Like, smoking week in an alley. You think Genji could pull strings hard enough to get Sayo here in that case?
She later learns Sayo is like 6 or 7 here
A: Okay, a little weird for someone that young to be smoking weed in the alley, but were going to go with it.

Then Shannon appears
A: Am I the only one bothered theyre using this sprite for a child? I mean *motions at boobs*
K: No, no! Youre not looking at the child. Were looking through the childs eyes. This is Shannon, Sayos concept of the perfect maid.

A: This reminds me of the line from Game of Thrones where when a Targaryen is born, they flip a coin whether theyre be a genius or insane. Well, I think the Ushiromiyas have the same coin.

When Will asks if Lion is a girl or boy, he gets a sassy stance and says what do I look like to you? Arria took a picture of the scene.

Bern asks Will to reveal who did it. She imitates Beatrices voice from the whaaat aaam I?

Will confuses Jessica with family seats since this Jessica has some memories of timelines with and without Lion.

At one point, Lions sprite edges closer to Will.
A: When that happens, block. Like yes, youre going to be walking around with your hands on your ass.

Will talks with Lion about his memories which havent been aligning with everyone elses
A; Just gonna throw this out. If you go to a group of people and say tell me about Beatrice and everyone tells you the same one except for the guy going Who?, I think you found your culprit!

Lion says he doesnt understand what Will is talking about when he mentioned Maria wanted to meet Beatrice, but Ill just nod and go along with it.
A: Just smile and grin, smile and grin.

Arria noticed the stained glass in the chapel shows three figures between one-winged eagles. A blue and a red haired person, with the yellow haired on in the middle. Very Beatrice-esque. The blue and red people could also represent Kanon and Shannon. Above them is a red world and a blue world circling a cross.
A: Could it be fantasy and mystery, and in the middle is truth or belief?

Will finally says Lion is one of the culprits, the one who never created Beatrice.
A: This would be a real mind fuck if I didnt already know.

Maria gets creepy with Jessica after Jessica talks about Maria going off into the forest to chant spells alone
A: She does creepy and terrifying well.

The game lampshades the fact that there are a lot of clues thrown out in the early chapters. It flashes back to a scene of Kanon talking to Jessica about wanting to be his true self
A: I just remembered, wasnt there a scene in Ep 1 or something where Battler says Wow Shannon, you didnt have breasts last time I saw you. You really grew! Like, this whole game is one big wink wink nudge nudge. If I rewatch this shit, Im going to slap myself every time a hint is thrown out, and Im gonna be slapping myself a lot.

Jessica goes through her thing about entering the VIP room. its pretty creepy, gotta admit. I think Arria was expecting a jump scare when Jessica turned the lights on. She sorta cringed just before it happened.

This scene is more unnerving than I remember lol.

Jessica wonders if nighttime really hinders humans that much, when the lights go out

Maria expressed her joy at being back on the island and wanting to learn a new spell from Beatrice. They mention Kinzo.

Beatrice mentions milk tea

Will asks Maria what time of year her meeting with Beatrice was because of Marias candy melting partially when she got home

The song that plays in this scene sounds like something out of a masquerade ball, which Arria points out
A: I can see dancers in fancy outfits, whispering secrets, exchanging partners, talking with their eyes. I like it!
I dont know what the song is. Ill have to find it later.

The game talks about the minimum number of people to create a world is two. Now change world to Beatrice. the minimum number of people to create a Beatrice is two. One can create her, but that one needs another person to nurture it.
A: Knowing what I know about Beatrice being Shannon, Kanon, Sayo this is really sad. She just wants someone to acknowledge her.

Kinzo talks about the underground cave-thingy where they stored the submarine and then retrieved the gold from it.
Arria got an idea that the epitaph was referring to this place. Since Kinzo has been saying stuff about how he was now alive she thought the hometown thing was referring to Rokkenjima, as this is his childhood, due to now being truly alive. She also thought the river could refer to the cave bisecting the cave, and sweetfish could refer to the torpedoes they had mentioned earlier in the flashback.
All pretty creative stuff, imo, although I know its not true. I still gave her credit for good thinking.

Theres talk about the Italians not being happy about unloading their gold.
A: This is gonna come to blows.

Kumasawa talks about her role in raising Beatrice 2

Shannon blue screens. At first Arria didnt know if it was intentional or if the game was screwing up, so I explained it as Shannon blue screening

A: Are you sure you want to reformat the C drive?

When Lion and Shannon are on screen together, Arria analyzes them.
A: its really impressive work. You can tell theyre the same person. The slight difference in eye color, the shading in Lions hair being the color of Shannons wig, the same tie, even the same shaped face. Like, you can tell one is wearing a wig and fake boobs, but they are the same person.

After another butt pinch in front of Kinzo, Lion has a *smile* (in the narration)
A: Ryukishi was on something when he wrote this. Something adorable.

Kinzo goes on about not leaving behind a will for his family, struggling onward in life, not dying until he reaches his goal, etc.
A: Good to know hes as sane as ever.

Kinzo: What do you know of Beatrice?
A: More than I want to.

Will: You thought of (the second) Beatrice in ways other than being your daughter
Arria: *visible disgust*

We see Beatrices portrait in the background, which prompts Arria to ask about Ep 7s portrait. I couldnt remember when/if it showed up in-game, but since its just Will and Lion with no spoilers, I showed it to her.

Lion introduces himself to Will and shows the kanji used in his name. Its the same ri that I use in my name (Erika) when Im weeaboo enough to use kanji to write my name. I told her how I use the e in Eva, the ri in Lion, and the ka in Jessicas names. I hadnt specifically gone to Umineko to decide those kanji, it just sorta happened coincidentally.

Then Bern shows up
A: Morning, Kitty.

Bern talks about the cat box some more
A: Dont think I miss the references to things like cat boxes and lions, because this game is being run by a cat.

A: So who was Erika then? A mouse or something the cat caught?
I was hoping Erikas profile would still be up so Arria could read it, but I think we missed it from Ep 6, so I gave her the rundown about how Erika (on that level) was a real person onboard a pleasure cruise who died and her corpse washed up on the island. Then people like Featherine took the story and applied it to their own fanfiction.

Lion has a sprite where his hands are on his hip and hes slightly turned. Id never seen it before

Arria seems to be in some kind of mood I cant explain so I ask her to explain it
A: I love how Umineko, no matter whats going on, always has a baseline level of characters being assholes.

Krauss: Im the chief mourner

Lion appears
A: *moment of silence* Is this what would have happened if Natsuhi hadnt yeeted a baby off a cliff?

I showed her the pic of The Lion King with Lion and Natsuhi and Kinzo as Simba, Rafiki, and Mufasa. She laughed her ass off for a solid minute.
