A: I’m starting to like Gohda in this episode more and more. He’s trying in his own sort of way. It reminds me of a coworker I had that was lazy most of the time, but she was the first person who would get in a customer’s face if they were causing problems. Gohda is like that! He can’t solve mysteries. He can’t find a murderer. But he can make a casserole! And he’s happy with that. He’s doing what he can do to make everyone happy, and I can respect that.

Nanjo has a line about “Kinzo was a good master. He had good food” And out of context (and thinking of the many definitions of the word ‘master’; this was ‘shishou’ as opposed to ‘oyakatasama’ or ‘goshujinsama’) it really looks like something a walrus would think.

Aaand, there we are. Now Beatrice confirms in red that Jessica’s room could only be entered through the door or window, yet earlier she said only the door. Arria thought this was a contradiction and I was certain there was a loophole somewhere. This is what I figured, and she was satisfied with this, but if you guys have another answer, we’d love to hear it
K: It’s time sensitive. In general, at any other point in time, the door or window could be used to enter or exit the room. Beatrice’s red line here was to deny the existence of a secret passage to the room. However, at the time that Jessica was killed, the window was locked from the inside and thus could not have been used as an escape because it meant someone inside would have had to lock it.

A: So she said in red that each master key is held by a servant, but she didn’t say that there weren’t other keys. Duplicates of Jessica’s keys, etc. No bump keys. No lock picks. Also, if I were in Kinzo or Natsuhi’s shoes and I lived in an old house with a lot of locked doors, I’d probably invest in a bump key! What if I got locked in the pantry?

When Beatrice says something about no tricks being used, only keys.

Also as a side note, the whole thing about ‘Kanon died in this room’ being in red kinda irks me. Like, I get that Yasu killed that personality, but like… I dunno. I feel like ‘killing your personality’ is something that shouldn’t happen immediately. I guess it died along with Jessica since part of Kanon’s raison d’être was his love for Jessica.

Battler mentions that he’s fucked himself because he both 1) wants to deny witches and 2) doesn’t want to blame a human. Beatrice taunts him a little

First time I heard the characters' names out loud was in the anime, though I was familiar with the kana readings of their names before then. I knew Ange's name was written with the kana 'enje' and Beatrice was 'beatoriche' but it's still easier for me to pronounce their names the normal English way.

On a side note, I've been watching Princess Principal this season, which features characters named Ange and Beatrice... both pronounced the way I said was 'normal' for me lol.

I've told Arria that the end of ep 3 will feature a test of her ability to solve a mystery given a ton of red truth surrounding it. Can't wait to see what she comes up with!

Beatrice has some red text regarding doors and windows. I discuss it with Arria a moment. The previous red text said something about ‘the master keys that each servant holds’ and so she thought it might be lying because Kanon wasn’t ‘holding’ it. I don’t know the original Japanese used there, and we can’t go back, but I took it to imply that it meant they were given a master key at the start of their shift/period of service. Also of note, Arria questioned the existence of the window (we could see it in the background art) before Beatrice mentioned it, so she thought they were being obtuse or that the background artists fucked up. Then Beato mentions the window in white text and says ‘it could probably be used to exit or enter, but it’s on the second floor.’ She wondered why that was in white instead of red.
K: It’s up to you to figure that out
A: Well, this isn’t the mansion from Re: Zero, even though that also had a Beatrice witch in it. So we can probably assume her room isn’t suddenly on the first floor. So that part is true. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the statement that ‘you could probably escape through the window’. That COULD have been said in red
K: Beatrice’s red truth is a double edged sword. It’s her weapon, but it’s also a weapon for Battler. He can only defeat her with it. As such, she wants to be careful with how much information she gives him
A: I like that. I like that she wants to make this a fair game.

While I was typing this up, she was looking up stuff about lockpicks. Hehe. I know there’s a red truth coming up against those. Still, expect some lockpick theories to come up

What was hilarious to me (and is impossible to portray through text) is the voice Arria used for the bees. It was basically ‘bored and high-pitched’ exactly what you would imagine a tiny little worker bee to sound like. But then when she got to Beatrice, she used her excited Beatrice voice.

I'm now imagining the scene from Ep3 where Kanon leads Jessica to safety as Sayo miming a Kanon sock puppet to Jessica even while she's blind.

Hehe, I wonder if she'll remember the sock puppet thing when that scene comes up. Also interestingly, I forgot to type it since Arria was doing a whole spiel with pretend sock puppets and there was no way I could write it all down. But one of the things she did was, while imitating Beatrice, pretend that Beatrice said the wrong name. i.e. 'I love you, Jessica!' followed by 'I love you too Shannon! I mean Kanon!' That earned a smirk from me, which I think Arria didn't notice because she was too distracted by her own antics.

She goes on a rant for a bit, and then I have to have her clarify. Essentially it dumbs down to this: the trope of “men are expendable.” You have a tough badass man. How are you gonna kill him? Make him love a woman and sacrifice himself to save her. She claims she doesn’t like this trope. She likes men. She wants them to die in better, more ‘heroic’ ways. Also because the trope is often paired with the cold-hearted bitch trope in which the female in question doesn’t care about the man. Not the case in Umineko here, but in other stories. Then she later clarified that she “hates” the trope and it’s a “shit” trope, but she loves it and loves when it happens. I think she’s just a tsundere.

Arria had to take a break to get over her emotional state… whatever that emotion was.
A: Okay, I think I’m in a better state to handle this
B: *drops bone*

That’s two and we haven’t even left the Metaverse. Then on top of that, you have the in-universe bullshit of ‘how can I convince them to let me marry her’ from George, the ‘let’s summon Satan/Beatrice’ from Kinzo, you have Kanon and Jessica’s bullshit. You have the various gambits between the parents between each other AND between them and Kinzo. That’s a spider web within a spider web. Various conflicts between the servants. And EVERYBODY wants the gold.

A: There’s a quote from Christopher Titus that I am reminded of with Rosa. “Act normal, and everyone accepts you. Act deranged, and they make you their leader.” Part of it is her sprite. She looks so nuts.

A: Oh god I want to hurt her so much. Yet I agree! I agree and yet I want to hurt her! This is hitting too close to a wound that’s not yet healed. Not as bad as Black Sails did. Yeah, I think it did. Arria remembered the bit about them originally being a branch family, but not that Kinzo was the last one remaining.

I visited her a few days ago (and we played a little bit more) and she told me that she has a new idea. She thinks Kinzo may have diabetes and the whole sugar cube-over-absinthe thing is his way of keeping blood sugar high. Of course, that's also gonna keep his blood-alochol level high, but hey, this is a crazy insane man we're dealing with.

Naturally, I would never tell her that Kinzo is already dead. :)

A: This reminds me of another series where something like this happens (Dresden Files series). I know how, why, and who did that in the Dresden Files and as Sherlock Holmes says “there’s nothing new under the sun.” There’s no unique crime. It’s all been done somewhere somehow. It’s all about knowing it and putting the pieces together. I have very little knowledge of murder mysteries compared to some people. I don’t have the analytical mind that Holmes and such have.
K: To be fair, I think a lot of that kind of stuff is just fiction
A: yeah, I’m just talking to myself at this point, not the audience.

A: Unless what we saw was partially accurate. That there WAS another person in that room and she was trying to protect Kanon

A: What about if everyone dies? All the children and grandkids? Who inherits after that? Are there branch members somewhere else?

Me (thinking) Now that I know about Yasu, how does this fit in? I am pretty certain Beatrice says at some point in red that there are five keys. Does Yasu have an extra? I don’t recall how this was resolved.

A: I’d like to note as well that it’s possible to lock a door from behind then escape out a window.

Line about Kanon’s body missing
A: Oh, there’s something there. He’s gonna be the scapegoat. Now no one is gonna look for the real murderer. It’s all gonna be on Kanon now.

A: Is this a clue? The line about fantasy taking the form of what they fear? Maybe it was some Cthulhu horror but it takes the form of Beatrice because that’s what everyone feared. That’s if it IS a magic answer. In reality, it’s something else… something tangible, but we don’t know yet.

Indeed, ep 3 is so good.

I remember some of those seals on that list. Seals have always been my favorite animal ever since I was a baby, so I watched a lot of stuff with seals in them. Though I have to lol at the Oshawott family being represented there (Pokemon based on otters) while disregarding the ACTUAL seal pokemon. You can't even tell me that the list included Oshawott over the others because he's a starter - Popplio is also a starter!

Oh man, the combination of three scenes at the end of chapter 2 elevate it to being one of my favorite chapters. Those three being the scenes where Beatrice parades Battler around like a dog, Rosa Musou, and Beatrice feeding Rosa the remains of her relatives.

Have I ranked the episodes yet? It's super hard for me to decide so if you asked me at any point in time, my answer would likely change.

Right now I'm feeling something like this: 5 > 3 > 6 > 2 > 8 > 7 > 1 > 4

Poor episode 4... it's really good in the second half, but the first half is so damn boring. I've heard it's much better on a second reading, so I'm kinda looking forward to it as strange as that may sound.

Nanjo is the most skilled walrus I've ever seen in fiction! Then again, how many fictional walruses are there?

Yeah, we know it's autism, but bringing that up every time Maria does something weird would be beating a dead horse. In the case of that line, this was the first time Arria saw Maria for this play session (day 8). Hence her updating me on things she'd done since the previous session.

To be fair, I feel like autism in general (in America) wasn't in the public awareness until about 10 years ago. When I was in high school (10 years ago), I never heard people talking about it. And when I think back to my high school classes, there was one kid that I KNOW now had to have autism/aspergers, but back then I just thought he was weird. In any case, I started becoming aware of autism shortly before my nephew was born, though I never suspected he was autistic as a baby. My sister got him tested when he was 3 or 4. I still don't believe he's entirely autistic (mostly because one of the signs is lack of affection, whereas my nephew is very affectionate), though he does have developmental disabilities. He just turned 7, but mentally you'd think he's 3 or so.

Haha, I think Arria panics a little too much when she talks about future kids. I'll let her know that she has your vote of confidence.

I've played the first three Phoenix Wright games, then about half of Apollo's game and half of Edgeworth's game. I don't know if Arria has played the games, but she's definitely aware of them. I thought that we made references to it previously, but it looks like the only one I wrote down is something coming up later (in a few more updates, she'll mention that Dread of the Grave sounds like PW music). I know we talked about the whole 'finger pointing' thing Battler does which is reminiscent of Phoenix. In the version we're playing, he gets a cut-in scene rather than a sprite change, and the first one happens in ep 1. I think with the old sprites, his first finger-pointing sprite happened in ep 2?

She needed a clarification of the rules of red truth. I said “It is the absolute truth, within context, usable only by witches.” (I’ll clarify later that it’s “people who understand the game rules”)
A: I would say it makes the truth easier to figure out, but this is Beatrice. She could outwit her way around a fae queen. I think a lawyer might stand a chance, but not us poor mortals. And certainly not Battler. They say ‘throw the baby in the river to see if it swims.’ He’s the baby. yet another statement about children that make me think this will be used against me in a court of law. If it makes you feel any better Raka, I don’t plan to have kids for many years.

Flow of the game? I think we’ll spend a hell of a lot more time in the Metaverse. Which isn’t a bad thing. Also, you stated ‘witches use the red’ and we know there are other witches, such as Bernkastel. Maybe she’ll use the red truth. It’ll be interesting to see how she uses it. Maybe she’ll use it to fuck with Beatrice, who I suspect she tolerates at best.
K: When you said ‘tolerates at best’ did you mean Bern to Beato or Beato to Bern
A: YES *takes a drink* I meant Bern to Beato. I don’t think the witches are friends, but they don’t have anyone else to talk to.

And so we started… right at the end of the chapter where Battler beats Beato’s key-mystery. Dread of the Grave starts and it’s super tense.

And because of how distraught she was, even if someone messed with the seal, we wouldn’t have a way of telling anymore. Hell with how distraught she was, they could have cut out the bottom and sewn it back up with a needle and thread and she wouldn’t have noticed.

Obviously I know how everything was done here, but I’m trying to give Arria some credit for that theory. With the information we have so far, I think it’s pretty clever!

Ah, I thought I remembered Worldend Dominator playing somewhere before Rosa Musou, but I couldn't recall where. I know it plays in various places after Ep 2, but I always associate it with Rosa's scene.

Mortal Stampede is so good! I forget exactly when it plays, but that's because the second half of Ep 4 is such a wild ride that when i read it, I was rushing through and hearing a lot of songs and now my memory can't remember what played where. Was Mortal Stampede during Jessica vs. Ronove? Victima Propaciatoria (sp?) was during George vs. Gaap, wasn't it?

When I mentioned the 8 epic zts songs, I was specifically referring to the big ones that they made for each episode. Golden Slaughterer, Worldend Dominator, Mirage Coordinator, Dreamend Discharger, Resurrected Replayer, Liberated Liberator, The Executioner, and Lastend Conductor. Man those names are fun to say.

A: So they were killed in the chapel, huh? This reminds me of a book series I once read. The Glasswrights. In the beginning of the first book Glasswright’s Apprentice, an assassination takes place in a chapel, work was being done by the glasswrights guild on the stained glass windows. A glasswright purposely leaves out a single small pane so that an assassin could shoot through the hole. I was thinking that would be a possibility here, but instead Ryukishi decided to trot out the Trick or Treat from hell.

The servants scatter and from here on out I’m gonna pay careful attention to Shannon and Kanon. I don’t recall how they manage to keep from being in the same place at the same time in this gameboard.

Rewrite is very, very different than most other Key series. I wouldn't really compare it to most of those. Has a lot of Umineko-esque action and some mystery elements in it. It's probably the least 'Key' of any Key VN. I really, REALLY enjoyed Rewrite up until the final route which I think is awful, but its very divisive and some people really like it.

Very divisive and some people like it, huh? Sounds like a lot of stories, including Umineko. For the record, I think the ending to this story is great.

Yeah I meant like regardless of the tiers. I think there is. Not sure if the community is still active.

There are Rosa and EVA Beatrice from the aunts (and Kyrie plays a part in Black Battler's special move) and yeah Erika is there.

My favorite was IIRC Lucifer, Ange, and Shannon.

Ah, so are certain 'groups' of characters portrayed by a single character? I.e. all the stakes are represented by Lucifer and all the Chiesters are represented by 410?

If I were to play, I'd be curious how the stakes perform. I'd also want to try out Ronove. >.> But yes, Rosa and Erika for me lol

I didn't know that Ryukishi was involved in Rewrite. Then again, I know next to nothing about that show/VN because it looks like "sad Key AIDS kills all waifus" and I have to be in a very specific state of mind to watch those. I got through Air and Angel Beats, but I stopped midway through Clannad's first season. I plan to pick it up again one day, but... again, have to be in a certain state of mind. But I will share that information with Arria in case she wants to see him writing a diabetes-inducing romance.

Glad you're amused, Raka. :) As for the fighting game, I meant that I was familiar with it existing. I don't know who the best character are (does it have tiers?) But if given the option, I'd want to play as either an aunt or Erika.

Nothing of note during the scene with the cousins in the bedroom. Just that as usual Arria was irritated with Maria being creepy. Although Maria was intelligent in that scene and spoke well, which caused her to say ‘See! You can be a normal person!’

Shannon has a line about how her relationship with George was fated to fail and how she was simply enjoying these days with George while she could. This made me feel sad for her. After all the things George said about having kids and living a nice life, Shannon must have been crying on the inside about her inability to have children. Maybe she thinks their relationship is fated to end because George would dump her after learning about her gender.

Hope is playing. This scene is too bittersweet.

A: Ryukishi could write romance books if he wanted to.
K: Some people consider Umineko a romance story.

I'm familiar with it, but I don't tend to play fighting games. Arria is more into fighting games than I am, so I'll tell her about it once she's finished Umineko, or at least gotten far enough in that I presume there's nothing major to spoil.

I'm not sure I'm smart enough to host a board game like the ones I saw. XD I might be an Erika, but I'm no intellectual rapist.
