(I've played Persona)It's really unapologetically focused on JRPG gameplay, especially if you play on hard (which SMT fans tend to like since it really makes you use all the mechanics to their max potential). Persona is hanging out with friends and slaying some demons at night sometimes. SMT is waking up to the end of the world and ceaselessly consuming the power of other demons until you're strong enough to choose the fate of the future. This game has a lot of stuff that makes it very approachable to a newcomer IMO. Demons are seen in the overworld instead of being random encounters which means you won't get ganked by a team of five slimes that OHKO you on your way to an item store. The game always warns you if you're about to walk into a scripted encounter. There's a lot of quality of life features like being able to warp to a save point at any time. Biggest gameplay difference from Persona in regards to battles is that you consume the essences of other demons to directly give yourself skills rather than summon a persona. In addition you choose any 3 other demons to be your partners in battle. --- |
