I played a hack that messes with some difficulty and such because I wasn't looking to sink a ton of time in it, so I could see it being kind of brutal at certain areas if you're not in to grind. Additionally, there are a handful of things needed to progress that are obtuse for a modern audience. I admit I used a guide for a handful of reasons. One is that since the random fights everywhere can get either dangerous or annoying so getting lost can just murder you. And getting lost is likely because the overworld is big and has a lot of dead ends, and the dungeons... good god on a place called Duncan's lab. I think there was one point somewhere that a character suggests you draw a map, I might be mistaking that though. But yeah, that is brutal. Despite that i appreciate the ideas and there is some enjoyable music for an NES. Especially a few scenes stick out in my mind that make me say, "why does Smash keep remixing magicant/overworld theme when you have these" If you're not emulating then expect a punishing experience without save states. Theoretically the game is pretty short, but there are so many encounters, status ailments that can basically just kill your current continue. The game likes to include a lot of gag items and trick NPCs too. I think it was pretty fun to come at this game at the time but nowadays you definitely want a more... full-fledged experience in regards to characters, presentation, balance, and story. --- |

| Doe 12/24/18 12:22:07 AM #10 | Outside of visual novels where a compelling enough plot is pretty important (the Ace Attorney and Zero Escape trilogies) There's also credit to gaming as a more immersive medium for that type of storytelling, I think atmosphere, presentation, and compelling dialogue is still vital to keep interest in many a videogame, and I think that's what people really mean by 'story' in videogames since I don't think people watch movies for the plot synopsis either. In that sense 'story' is without a doubt almost as important, if not sometimes moreso, than the gameplay itself. Think about Metal Gear for example. As far as literal plot coherency and believability, it's fucking nonsense. But those games have unparalleled presentation and style with its visuals, music, and dialogue. We love them for it, but none of that concerns walking around corridors or tranqing people. --- |

| Doe 12/23/18 1:12:08 PM #7 | It is mediocre. I found the battle system fun but the game is as deep as a puddle; it presents you with beautiful locales you can't interact with at all. The story ranges from 'forgettable' to 'disturbing message' (Therion), and there's tons of awkward game design. Dungeons in the overworld are always open to explore but you can't fight the boss until you get the sidequest from the one NPC in the whole game who can give it to you. The first character you choose to play as is arbitrarily locked into your party, but you won't know this until you've picked up 4 other characters. Oh and I forgot the worst part of all. The voice acting. I really, truly do not understand the idea behind it. Characters say phrases before every screen of dialogue, but the phrase almost never matches the dialogue itself. This is at best jarring and at worst fucking annoying when you hear the same awkward bad anime VA voiceline for the thousandth time. It feels necessary to switch to a different language so that your brain doesn't get fucked up with the dissonance. --- |

Skyrim's main quest certainly has cool aspects to it but a main quest is just something with cool set pieces that encourages you to visit different areas of the game. As far as side quest writing goes, Skyrim imo is very mediocre. Certainly pales in comparison to the last two games. Graphics is anyone's guess as to how Todd defines 'next gen.' Gameplay, that's a very broad term. My biggest worry would be how they handle leveling and character development. But I have hope that they'll incorporate much better melee combat at the least. I'd like to say better movement/traversal but they haven't given me much hope in their recent entries. If I had one big hope for VI (besides better world scaling and not having cities the size of a preschool), it would be a much better magic system. Skyrim actually has a fantastic catalogue of magical powers... but instead of being customizable spells, it's all locked to the cumbersome Shout system. Imagine becoming a storm mage or a time sorcerer. Spells with push force, spells that amplify your speed or the strength of your swings. So much wasted potential in that game! --- |
