There's also credit to gaming as a more immersive medium for that type of storytelling, I think atmosphere, presentation, and compelling dialogue is still vital to keep interest in many a videogame, and I think that's what people really mean by 'story' in videogames since I don't think people watch movies for the plot synopsis either. In that sense 'story' is without a doubt almost as important, if not sometimes moreso, than the gameplay itself.

Think about Metal Gear for example. As far as literal plot coherency and believability, it's fucking nonsense. But those games have unparalleled presentation and style with its visuals, music, and dialogue. We love them for it, but none of that concerns walking around corridors or tranqing people.

For me, a good story and whatnot is nice to have, but not as essential as entertaining gameplay.

Out of the various aspects that go into making a game, story ranks maybe fourth or fifth in priority for me. Behind gameplay, sound/music, aesthetic/art direction/graphics, etc.

For example, I like games like Guilty Gear, where the gameplay is great, the character designs are cool, and the soundtrack is fantastic. I feel the same about other games like Mega Man X or Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

I think gameplay is more important as well. I'll play a game if I'm having fun but if the world/story sucks I can let it pass.

Look how many people adore BotW. Zelda doesn't really do story.
