Speaking of which, was there a point to the tedious boo catching for 50/50 besides the gem it spawns? There was some serious tedium regarding the higher health boos.

No, getting all Boos just gives you the gem. But it's important, along with a bunch of other stuff, for getting the best grade. You do have to go out of your way to get the higher grades.

I gotta say that back when Dark Moon released I played that game and loved it but saw a lot of lampooning of it for being less 'soulful' than the original, but I can't say that the portrait ghost designs are all that great in this game. There's a couple entertaining ones like Bodybuilder Biff or the frozen guy but in the end they're still just justifications for the room's gimmick, so much so that Van Gore made them as such in-game.

I remember back when I did 2-3 max score runs. Good times. Worst part was definitely having to get all the money ghosts and mice during the blackout and that one mouse that had a 1/5 chance of appearing in that sealed room on the roof that you had to slog through the whole mansion to try again if the mouse didn't appear that time.

He only made the generic ghost enemies. The portrait ghosts were originally real people.

Then again I think the A rank has higher requirements outside of the original US version.

You can see a bust of Biff that he made among other things in the room. Additionally when he tells you that his creations will last forever, Luigi says that only one is left in the mansion, presumably King Boo; that realization reveals his heart. They may have been based on real people, assuming he didn't craft the busts, but then they're not literally those guys' souls, they're caricatures.

This sounds like some headcanon theory you've made up or read from someone else. None of the wikis or tvtropes talks about this. And King boo is definitely not his creation. Not to mention, you can leave many optional portrait ghosts alive and he still says the same thing. I'm pretty sure Luigi is just talking about the treasure chest painting behind him.

I don't see how that's a crackpot theory it's just simple observation from running through the game blind once. I dunno, in any case the ghosts do not add much to the atmosphere imo

I've played the game 5 times and had to look up a lot of stuff online to learn all the mechanics on getting the max score as well as being a regular of Dark Moon's board during its release and you're the first I've seen making that theory.

I remember getting pretty mad as a kid finding out you couldnt A rank on PAL (in my case Australian) without going through the Hidden Mansion.
