They targeting gamers.

Gamers.

We're a group of people who will sit for hours, days, even weeks on end performing some of the hardest, most mentally demanding tasks. Over, and over, and over all for nothing more than a little digital token saying we did.

We'll punish our selfs doing things others would consider torture, because we think it's fun.

We'll spend most if not all of our free time min maxing the stats of a spirit all to draw out a single extra point of damage per second.

These people honestly think this is racist? They think they can take our media? They take our donkey kongs? Gamers aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making mods for smash. They think calling us racist is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a head set. They picked a fight against monkey kong that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who enjoy the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a challenge when they tell us we no longer donkey kong. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex.

Gamers are monkey kong by nature. We love a deejay. The worst thing you did in all of this was to racism donkey kong. You're racist; this is just another spirit fight.

Maybe you guys lack the ability to read between the lines. But if you consider something an insult, it becomes an insult, in which case almost anything can become an insult, regardless of intent.

But if the intent wasn't offensive and something innocent, and we perceive it to be something innocent, then it's innocent and nobody is hurt.

It's the fundamental flaw in language that definition is so malleable. You know how in meme culture, you can call somebody an animal for doing something insane? Is that a racial slur or offensive? Regardless of the history of say calling a certain race that of a primate to be offensive, that's in the past. If the present disregards a much less sensitive history and start changing the value of words, then we can reduce the amount of racial slurs in the world. If no words exist to insult somebody, then somebody can't be insulted. As long as you guys react in this way, this can't happen

This one of those things where I don't see a need to whine about this. This isn't hurting anybody. Plus, a lot of the fun of these spirits is figuring out how and/or why these fighters represent the spirit.

Historically blacks have been compared to animals specifically apes/monkeys in a dehumanizing way. And is still used as a racist insult today.

Spirit battles usually use a character that looks, behaves, or fights similarly to the spirit it represents.

So therefore using Diddy/Donkey Kong to represent a black fighter is at the very least insenstive, and there were probably better characters they could have used instead.

That is some bullshit there. But the people of CE are going to be ok with black people liken too apes. They couldn't have black people in the game.. but they have their sprites equated to the apes... yeah that is messed up.

And on further reading, it seems like the Villager might have been an oversight from an earlier version of the game where there wasnt a dark skinned version. So they changed the skin color of the purple shirt and didnt notice during testing.
