Of course, I've seen it parodied a ton, but it always struck me as just a quaint portrait. Apparently there was a long-running debate across the fine art world when this painting was unveiled about what statement it might be making. Many noteworthy art critics praised the painter Grant Wood for ostensibly portraying an "insightful critique of rural traditionalism and God-fearing conservatism." Grant Wood himself said "There is satire in it, but only as there is satire in any realistic statement."
