I never really played it, but I thought that Donkey Kong 64 received acclaim from critics and fans alike.

It has not aged well from a gameplay perspective.

It has superb music, charm, and graphics/ambience (for an N64 game), but it really bludgeoned the collectathon format.

I was in the military. U.S. Navy. I was on a 6 month deployment to the Mediterranean. I was 22 years old, in the prime of my life, super healthy, great shape, traveling the world to beautiful destinations. Much much better than the previous Middle East deployment. So yeah 1998 was a good year for me personally.

Backtracking is a pacing issue, not level design. The puzzles and other challenges were better.

True, it is a pacing issue... But I feel like the peak overworld challenges and puzzles in the first game were more memorable than what TTYD had to offer.

I'd take Chapter 7 level design in the original any day over whatever TTYD offered.
