https://www.who.int/news/item/01-03-2024-one-in-eight-people-are-now-living-with-obesity

That is about 1 Billion people globally and increasing.

More people are now suffering from being overweight and obese than starvation and famine.

What do you think we can do to reverse this trend?

Nothing. Unhealthy foods are addicting as opioids.

So you dont know the number of the US population vs the rest of the world.

US has less than 400 million people. Even if the entire population was obese (it isn't), it still wouldn't even account for half.

Lowering calorie and sugar intake. Thankfully Keto has blown up a ton in recent years into all sorts of different foods and options. So you can sub out the more unhealthy things you eat or just crave for the same but keto.

The problem that theyre gated crazy high price tags.

i think the way we have youtubers successfully pushing diet advice speaks to a gap in public health -- it could be access, it could be people generally don't look at their doctor as a source for that advice. it could be that the long-term effects of eating poorly aren't communicated clearly enough outside of 'too much sugar = diabetes'.

but to that end it seems like there's a pervasive mindset where soda isn't viewed as liquid candy and is instead viewed as, you know, just another drink. i don't think even the 'you get almost 80% of your daily intake of sugar in only 140 calories' nutrition label gets the point across as dramatically as it needs.

Thankfully Keto has blown up a ton in recent years

i'm not trying to sit here and say keto is inherently bad, but there's a huge difference between getting the advice to start a keto diet from your primary care and getting it from the internet, and it's primarily that your doctor isn't trying to get views or to sell a book.

Make healthy food cheaper. Despite fast food prices increasing, it's still a cheaper option than most healthy options. Yes, it's possible to make healthier options yourself, but people are having less and less time to cook due to having to work.

I would think we see an uptick with the advancement of the computers/Internet and screen time. Whether it be work related sitting in front of a screen all day or leisurely/socially spending more time sitting around looking at screens rather than being active.

While I think greater access to food probably is a factor and the more financially stable and secure you are with ease of access to food matters I think it is more about activity level.

I think we are more sedentary than ever.

This is a good idea, and I know some insurances offer such a thing. Like, it isn't much, but I know a local medicaid insurance here offers a monthly "healthy food" $25 gift card. Granted, that's like one meal for a family, but it's on the right track.

"Healthier food" doesn't have to mean "salad vs fried chicken" though. At all. This feels like an intentionally defeatist and misleading argument.

Part of the issue is that people are not being properly educated. I'm not sure if grade school kids still have health class, but even back in the day, at best they'd tell you how fruits and veggies are good for you, but they never spoke of just how bad soda and sweets are, and all the oils and plethora of other unhealthy ingredients. People really should take the time and google each of these ingredients. And you'll likely wonder how the FDA is able to label these things as being safe for consumption.

Its not meant to be. Its used for weight loss without drastically altering most peoples diet. After a few months you take a break and then return.

Even then its help spark the creation of numerous healthy, low calorie/suger alternatives from chips, snack bars to even things like peanut butter and jelly. The issue that its crazy expansive and above the affordable of the income classes that need it most.

Well, no. No one ever said keto was a good longterm diet.

Its basically a short term thing for people to lose weight quickly. It won't train you to start eating right and be healthy. Its only purpose is quick weight loss.

You can lose weight, but if you want to keep it off you need to commit to a healthier lifestyle.

Its not necessarily eating less, its eating less shitty food.
A fuckton of people would be normal weight if they stopped eating out, and only cooking from scratch. None of the shit where you dont understand 90% of the ingredients. If the ingredient list is a fucking paragraph, no way it is good for you.

"What do you think we can do to reverse this trend"

-Better health education.
-Partner with celebrities and influencers to get children/young people interested in more healthful eating.
-Free meals at schools that are nutrient dense but low calorie, and low sugar.
-Tax companies more for selling unhealthy foods
-Raise taxes on sugar. These taxes go towards health programs.
-Increase access to fresh affordable produce
-Subsidize healthy foods without letting companies pocket the savings instead of passing them on.
-Make cities more pedestrian friendly. Walking burns calories. Driving does not but the stress might contribute to stress eating.
-Decrease poverty and overall stressors. Many people stress eat and cheap foods tend to be cheap
-Get religious groups to devote a good chunk of their messaging and charity to nutritious foods.
-Improve quality of public water.
-Outlaw marketing sugary beverages or foods to children. Outlaw free soda refills. Must charge as much as a whole new beverage.
-Be extremely strict with marketing standards for "healthy" food. Severe fines even prison time.
-Morbid obesity in children should be classified as child abuse and more actively intervened in.
-Change our work laws and work cultures to enable more time for proper eating/dealing with health issues. Paid Sick leave, paid vacation, paid and longer breaks etc.
-Universal healthcare
