tbh, I dont think so lol. I was watching this dude on FB who made a series of following workers from different jobs. It all seems to be the same. They get up early as fuck, work the full 8-10 hours with a measly break somewhere. Then, for whatever reason, all the workers hang out and drink/eat at a restaurant until 9-11. Hell no

The one dude changed into a suit in the morning, just to WALK to work. Then changed into a work uniform
It is slowly improving. The stereotype is based more on the 80s than now, but it still isn't great. As for hanging out for 2 hours after work, you never got a drink after work with co-workers? But as the Wikipedia link says, it's because they foster a "family" atmosphere. Except, unlike in America, they put some effort into it beyond lip service during your hiring interview.

I think everyone exaggerated the work conditions in Japan. It's not an Utopia obviously, but it's also far from being a Dystopian.

Ask anyone from 3rd world country, would they work in Japan and 99% will answer yes.
Well, yeah, Japan has AC in the offices, as opposed to the Cambodian sweatshop making Nikes.

Japan's work culture is allegedly improving, but back in 2015 a lot of them still felt "work-life balance" wasn't an important concern. Remember, a stereotype just starts as an exaggerated fact. And stereotypically, in Japan, "Work is life, therefore, no need for balance."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_work_environment#Working_conditions
An interesting takeaway from that is, despite the long hours, they rank badly in productivity, however. Thus telling us what we knew all along. "Take the vacation for your own sake, and unplug from work."

Fair enough. I can see how it comes to exist though. You need someone in charge of enforcing a law you set out. Say "all milk must be pasteurized for sale." So you create "the milk pasteurization task force" to enforce that. Then you say "all meat must be prepared for sale based on these requirements" and then you make the "meat preparation task force". And so on down the line, and eventually someone goes "We could probably merge a bunch of these to save time and money on redundant functions". And then the US Patent office has an agricultural division, and then it gets so big it becomes the US Department of Agriculture.

There's some flippancy in my statement. I would agree the FDA needs to exist, and generally there aren't that many good reasons for the courts to throw out their decisions.

Most of my arguments against regulatory bureaucracy stem from them seeming to forget their job is to enforce laws, not redefine them.

The issue is it is a theory. But in science a theory can be pretty damn iron clad, because it depends on evidence. Hell, I've read some scientific theories are more immutable than laws. An example would be the Law of Gravity and the Theory of relativity.

In science, as long as you keep proving the theory, it stays true. If actual compelling evidence came out that we evolved from jelly fish, the theory would change. However, school education sucks at actually explaining the difference between scientific usage of words, and laymen usage of words.

So, between that and the idea of a chocolate bar costing a dime (in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory anyway), and the inspiration, the book presumably takes place in the 1920s.

The point being, the Wonka factory doesn't even live up to safety standards of 1920s Britain.
