Does anyone else here really love Get Real Paid off of Midnite Vultures? I think it's one of his best songs, but its lack of being released as a single has obviously limited its reach. He did play it live when I saw him, however.

Like that was one of the big revelation movies of the year. Nobody expected that to be good and it was pretty much the resurrection of a lot of old cinematography values in the form of a lovely sequel. It kind of amazes me it got so little respect in these noms.

No one expected it to be good? The director has had one of the most consistently strong careers over the last decade, and Arrival did phenomenally last year.

I mean, it's easily the standout choice there. It's easy to blame 'politics' if you're literally offended by the idea of a movie about a woman winning an award, even when it's the standout choice in its category completely independent of that fact...

I'm not talking about my opinion. You saw the Golden Globes, right?

I didn't but know what happened; I'm saying it's misguided to preemptively blame something on politics when the movie you're talking about also has the highest score in its category on Metacritic. Especially when you're reasoning apparently boils down to 'because it features a woman.'

It doesn't have the entire Criterion collection due to streaming rights, but it does have most and the Filmstruck side has its own set of films it cycles through. I've been using it a lot, I'd say it's worth it.

I still don't get the hype behind Logan. James Mangold is such a bland director. He's as generic as they come. The strong performances and interesting concept are really dragged down by his rudimentary direction.

As far as It Comes at Night is concerned, it's a horror movie in the classical sense but not really by the modern definition. It sets out more to discomfort with a heavy atmosphere than to scare.

Have you seen "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"? Unattractive title but I really like Martin McDonagh. Also wondering if you saw 'It' - I'm guessing yes, but that it didn't make your top 10. I still need to see It Comes At Night, though I've heard from some that it "technically isn't a horror movie".

Three Billboards comes to my local art theater this weekend, and I'll definitely be seeing it. I've seen 6 other movies this year:

I felt the need to skip a friend's wedding due to some polyamorous issues; but in this case, he is very polyamorous while she is against it. He has decided to suppress his urges, but it's clear he's not happy with it, and I just don't see how they're going to work it out without both of them being unhappy...part of it seems to be that they're both lonely enough people that they don't want to go through the effort of finding someone more suited to them. I like both of them as people, but I don't think they go well together.

Thank god I ended up with someone who's just as polyamorous as I am...

I'm putting together a round of trivia for a party this weekend. One of my categories is going to be obscurish songs by famous bands, with the main idea being that everyone will be familiar with the bands but won't know the songs (they simply have to name the band). I have a few good picks, but wanted to see if anyone had better suggestions for my three remaining spots.

Ones I'm confident in including:
The Laughing Gnome by David Bowie
Wild Honey Pie by The Beatles
The Fool on the Hill by Bjork
Wiggle Wiggle by Bob Dylan
Pop is Dead by Radiohead
Santa Baby by Taylor Swift
Signs of Life by Arcade Fire

Of course some of these are instantly recognizable (David Bowie has a very distinct voice), but there can be varying levels of difficulty. I mainly want to find songs that will make people laugh. Any suggestions?

I think Nagito somehow believed the 'traitor' agreed with him on the idea that the others deserved to die for being the Remnants. The reason he ultimately failed is because Chiaki was too good and well-intentioned to not come forward; no amount of luck could change Chiaki's personality. Nagito misunderstood what good really meant.

I really like the voice actor for Fuyuhiko/Kokichi. I can't remember the exact phrasing, but I love the line during the fifth class trial where it's something like "How could he stab his right hand with his right hand?" Just, the amount of exasperation in his voice there is perfect. He gives both characters the right amount of whine in their voice, which intentionally undermines Fuyuhiko's persona and adds to the playfulness of Kokichi.

It's funny to me because Miu comes off as one of the few 'villains' of the cast, but no one else seems to view her that way. She's just as antagonistic to everyone as Kokichi, and she's the only character who tries to escape for her own selfish reasons. Kaede tries to kill the mastermind, Kirumi wants to save the country, Korekiyo is simply insane and is acting the same way within the game as outside of it, Gonta was simply saving someone else from being killed, while Kaito concocted a plan with Kokichi to put an end to the game. In a game about sacrifice, Miu is the character that stands in opposition, but we don't even consider her a 'villain' because she completely failed at her plan.

hmmm. well, I won't really touch this except to say I'm pretty sure Kyoko would've felt really bad if Makoto had actually died and despite Kokichi's "no killing policy" I don't think he actually cared about Gonta

Hmm...I felt it was clear during the end of case 4 that Kokichi was actually in mourning over Gonta's death. That's pretty much the only moment I felt confident in my read of his true feelings.

I think an important thing to consider about the end game characters of DRV3 is that 5 of them come to the conclusion that the best option is for everyone to die; Kokichi, meanwhile, is actively trying to break the system that is causing this.

Gonta, Maki, Kibo, Himiko, and Shuichi are all ready to die for this game to be over. In addition to lying, a major theme of this game is the idea of sacrifice. Kokichi, however, is using the situation to try and sacrifice himself to save the others. He's the only character beside Kaede who really seems to be fighting to save everyone else; he unfortunately has to sacrifice Gonta along the way to get a chance at his plan, but Gonta was also ready to be sacrificed.

Gonta, Maki, Kibo, Himiko, Shuichi, Kokichi, Ryoma, Kaede...hell, the entire cast at the end of case 2 is ready to sacrifice themselves for the "greater good."

Byakuya and Kokichi are at the bottom of my list, while Nagito's up top. I think the three of them all have pretty distinct differences, especially as far as their motivation goes.

The only similarity to me is that they serve the role of 'in-group antagonist' that the games need until the final reveal of the true antagonist. Byakuya is just an asshole, Nagito is losing touch with reality, and Kokichi is a troll. Their function is similar, but their behaviors are distinct. The big thing for me is that Byakuya chooses not to question himself, Nagito is incapable of questioning himself, while Kokichi has simply been performing and is fully aware what he has been doing is awful. The latter two work better because they add an interesting take on how killing games can function.

My main problem with Fakin' It is my husband and I can usually call each other out immediately with 100% certainty. When I play with just friends, it usually works better, but anyone who lives with you simply knows whether some statements are blatantly false (quicker than I think the game intends).

I did my first stream of this last night with a bunch of other online friends. I need to do it more.

Kokichi's laugh is the standout sound to me, I think in large part because it sounds like an exaggerated version of one of my friend's laughs.

Ultimate Identity: Princess
Endearing Character Trait: Likes guns

Sonia is a pretty decent survivor, all things considered. Like most of the DR2 survivors, she doesn't really have much presence. What puts her ahead of people like Kazuichi and Akane is her interactions with other characters: her weird chemistry with Gundham, the way she shuts down advances from Kazuichi and Teruteru, even the way she's kind to that piece of garbage Hiyoko. Sonia is like a teammate who's not that special on their own, but makes people around them better.

She's also a walking talking Nirvana reference, so that doesn't hurt either. Truly a worthy heir to the four devas of destruction.

Next: Don't go thinking yer so bad just cause you wuz in SOLDIER.

Does Sonia not have much presence? The game really makes her look suspicious through at least two trials, and her relationship with Gundham is fantastic. She gets some of the best dialogue in the game. Most importantly, she delivers the strongest specific moment of any trial as she refuses to believe the truth of case 5.

Shame about American Dream; I think we have to opposite opinion on it. I think the beginning is kinda slow, with tracks 3 and 4 being the weakest, but then it hits How Do You Sleep and goes on a phenomenal 4-track high. Though even being a low for me on this album means I still like those two songs...

I like imagining a world where Danganronpa became the next Beatles. Danganmania.

That's also why I don't take the ending as personally as some people seem to...it's not about us, the actual audience, but the way some things that become popular are sometimes broken down into their most basic elements, missing the original intent. The world of Danganronpa V3 is just as much of a dystopia as the original arc; it just looks closer to ours. Tsumugi's claims about why the audience engages with it are not actually the true reason most of us care about this series.

The implanted memories bit was obvious for both me and a friend who has been telling me his thoughts as he plays; the exact circumstances weren't clear, but I was certain from the opening scene that the whole thing was being invented in some capacity (same as the digital door in the opening scene DR2).

As far as Tsumugi cosplaying as Kaede, Kaede isn't a fictional character, but a "real fictional" character. In the context of this world, Kaede is essentially a created person. Their background and memories are created, but as all the characters are saying at the end, their experiences and interpretations of the world are signs that they are real, living humans. Tsumugi being unable to cosplay as Kaede supports the idea that they are real.
