| CasanovaZelos 09/08/17 4:18:33 PM #5 | It's a National album alright. I gave it an 8.7/10, which is the same I gave Alligator and Trouble Will Find Me. I gave High Violet a 9.5 and Boxer a 9.3. | CasanovaZelos 08/18/17 11:34:32 AM #172 | I think people need to realize how these ideologies spread. It (at this stage) isn't through mass media. Most people who fall into this level of toxic racism are convinced through people they personally know. It's really easy to convince people that white supremacy is the way; and one of the biggest tools of racist groups is being able to spread the idea that 'most people secretly believe in this, but they're being PC.' Fighting back until they are covered in the news for weeks and forcing right-leaning government officials to make explicit statements against their beliefs makes that statement harder to spread. It brings forward a national discussion where condemnation of white supremacy becomes clear. Many people teetering on the edge will hopefully see the responses that wouldn't be there without the protests. They would likely still hold their racist beliefs, but it's falling into the belief that 'this is what the nation really wants' that escalates many people into joining these groups. Except it's a term that means whatever the individual using it wants it to mean. We once had emo, then hipster, now we have SJW as that term that lost any actual meaning and just refers to people who have different views (but where hipster was used for views on art and entertainment, SJW is used for politics). SJW used to specifically refer to people who took social issues too far ('stop romance-coding the phrase 'in love',' etc), which most people could agree was a negative thing. The real difference is it's a horror that has no intent on being 'scary.' Which sounds odd, but a lot of classic horrors are the same. It's kind of like 1915 in cinema; of course games existed before 1985, but this is where the industry really began to take shape into what we know today. It's not the NES launch as much as it being the beginning of the modern era (which even stands out to me as someone born years after the fact). There's a reason we had vote-ins for the years before 1985 specifically (SBAllen is totally doing this contest this year because it's the last he can do a 32-entrant bracket starting from the 'beginning' of modern gaming with each year since getting a spot). | CasanovaZelos 04/07/17 3:37:14 PM #15 | Content warnings are important; it's nice to have a reference of what you're getting into, and if it is particularly effecting to someone, it's good to give them the option to not engage with that particular work. It doesn't really work outside the context of art and entertainment, and it's too often used as a form of censorship online. If merely hearing the title of a work about suicide is triggering, your trigger is too common to be properly protected against. The problem is, triggers are an actual thing some people have, but a bunch of assholes who don't have triggers have started using the phrase to shut down discussion of things that make them uncomfortable (which is different than a trigger). Hopefully, people will someday realize that triggers are an actual element of certain disorders and the result tends to be a whole lot more visceral than discomfort. It's the same thing as gluten allergies; the sudden explosion of misuse harms the few people who actually suffer from the condition.
