The Shape of Water got 13 nominations, it's easily the frontrunner.

The biggest surprise is definitely Logan getting an Adapted Screenplay nomination, which is awesome. First superhero movie ever to do so and one of only two comic/graphic novel adaptations ever to do so, the other being A History of Violence.

I wish they'd open this up to video-on-demand stuff as well. Carla Gugino deserves a best actress nom for Gerald's Game. Kinda like how Essie Davis deserved a nomination for The Babadook, and even that had a limited theatrical release.

Dunkirk and The Shape of Water are the only two that can even win Best Picture. You have to be nominated for Best Director and Best Film Editing to have a shot, and those were the only two. There have been rare exceptions to this rule. The last 5 times it happened was Birdman for Film Editing in 2014, Argo for Director in 2012, Driving Miss Daisy for Director in 1989, Ordinary People for Film Editing in 1980, and Annie Hall for Film Editing in 1977.

"I voted based on what my kids liked."

I didn't but know what happened; I'm saying it's misguided to preemptively blame something on politics when the movie you're talking about also has the highest score in its category on Metacritic. Especially when you're reasoning apparently boils down to 'because it features a woman.'

It's not new paintings in the sense that they start from scratch on a different canvas. The movie is like a living painting. As the frames move, you can see the brush strokes painting over top of the stuff. It's quite a watch.

Loving Vincent actually sounded pretty cool and I'd wish I'd gone to see it. My parents actually did watch it and they both said it was really good.

Also, in other news I hope The Shape of Water does well because that was a really good movie. I haven't seen most of its competition so I can't really say which I think is the most deserving, but I'll root for the one I have seen which I loved at least.
