Let's exclude classic arcade style games where the idea is to keep doing this...

I just started KOTOR again for what must be the sixth or seventh time, and I never get much further than becoming a Jedi. I think it's been a different reason every time...either getting tired of hiccups playing on the 360, realizing I don't like my build, having the laptop I was playing on die...

Final Fantasy XII, every time I start it I tell myself "Maybe this'll be the time it clicks for me" and it just doesn't. I've started it like 5 times and gotten to various points.

And yes I will most likely being getting the HD version to once again try and see if it clicks.

Final Fantasy Tactics. I've finished it a good deal due to sheer number of playthroughs attempted, but I tend to not care to actually play the game out once my team is all setup and a few of the more key difficult midgame battles have been hit.

I'm guessing you don't mean open world games where "beating" the game isn't very well defined.

Unfortunately, other than the Elder Scrolls series, I can't think of any games I've started multiple times and only beaten a few.

...Well, actually, I've started KOTOR several times myself and haven't even beaten it once, so let's go with that.

FFVII maybe. I've played it at least three times without technically beating it. My main attempt I got to the final boss and died, so I went to grind a bit and then I just moved on to something else and never went back. Other times I just never made it that far again.

Though I watched my brother beat it once so I still saw the ending.

Does it have to be a game I have never finished, or just one that I abandon a lot of playthroughs? I thought the former but some people interpret it as the second

Anyway, my answer is Fire Emblem 7. I've even gotten to the final boss but never finished it. Have probably started it 5 or 6 times

The title is ambiguous because it could mean you start a lot of playthroughs that don't finish, even if you have beaten the game before. As you can see Lopen interpreted it that way

FFIV or Fallout 2.

FFIV because the old SNES cartridge would reset around the time I got to the last fifth of the game or so. I only got to the Final Boss on one playthrough. I probably played through it 3-4 times for that reason, I had far more patience back then, since I really don't even consider it among my favorite games.

Half Life 1. 7 or 8 times. I think it's the best traditional shooter ever, but it gets kinda repetitive for me. Then again, I really dislike shooters, so the fact that I managed to sit around for hours playing one even though I didn't finish it probably says something about the quality of the game.

FFVIII i've only beaten once and is probably the game i've tried to replay the most times since then without beating it. at least 5 times for sure, maybe more like 10? can't really remember.

Well, I'm officially further in KOTOR than I've been before; as in, I finally got past the Jedi planet and can actually, like, explore. I'm also doing the Dark Side this time (I usually play the good guy in games like these the first time), which is a lot more interesting.

I'm embarrassed to admit that not only do I not finish the majority of the games I start, but this includes several games that I actually consider favorites. Age of Mythology is in my top 5, maybe even top 2 games of all time, and I have never beaten the campaign (and I'm primarily an sp person in rts'). I've probably started it a dozen times, but have never gotten beyond about the 2/3 mark, mostly due to difficulty. On the PS2, I love and have never beaten Destroy All Humans!, Mercenaries, and Dark Cloud 1, despite having started them all several times. I've also never beaten Spider-Man 2 on Gamecube despite several play-throughs (though I've gotten to the final boss), and on the DS have never finished HeartGold despite having played it twice (once stopping shortly after the halfway point with the Elite Four, and once after getting 12 or 13 badges (though the latter save still exists and could theoretically be continued).

Donkey Kong 64 is probably my closest. Not in the way that I completely restart it, but since I got it when I was like 10, I've gone back to it and gotten back into it and inched closer to finally finishing it like five times over the course of 15 years. Though at this point, I'm beyond giving up on that shit.
