You pay a fee, answer some simple multi choice questions and if you pass the quiz you don't get points on your license and the infraction doesn't affect your insurance rates. But not all infractions qualify for traffic school and at least here in California you can't take it too often. You have to wait a certain amount of time before you can do it again. It's a scam to entice you to just pay the fine to avoid risking an increase in insurance rates. I put on a good act, told the officer I was sorry but I was just trying to make it to a restroom before I crapped my pants. He let me go. He was still behind me when the next off ramp came up so I took it.
