https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/17/politics/cuomo-ron-kim-nursing-home/index.html

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been pleading with lawmakers for support and even threatening political retribution against Democrats who have criticized him in an aggressive effort to contain political fallout from revelations that his administration had concealed the full extent of nursing home-related deaths during the Covid pandemic. Describing an alleged exchange with the governor that has not been previously reported, Democratic Assemblyman Ron Kim told CNN that he received a call on his cell phone from the governor last week as he was bathing his children at home. "Gov. Cuomo called me directly on Thursday to threaten my career if I did not cover up for Melissa [DeRosa] and what she said. He tried to pressure me to issue a statement, and it was a very traumatizing experience," Kim said. Cuomo proceeded to tell the assemblyman that "we're in this business together and we don't cross certain lines and he said I hadn't seen his wrath and that he can destroy me," according to Kim. DeRosa is a top aide to the governor who came under fire last week after she told state lawmakers in a private virtual meeting that the state had delayed sharing with the legislature the full scope of the Covid-related death toll of New York's nursing home residents because of concerns about a potential federal investigation by the Department of Justice. (The governor's office has since released a partial transcript of the call.)

Kim, a progressive representing Queens who has been among the most vocal critics of Cuomo's handling of nursing homes during the pandemic and believes his own uncle died from a presumed case of Covid in a nursing home last year, participated in that virtual call. During the meeting, Kim said he called on the governor to apologize to family members of those who died in assisted living facilities. When the New York Post first reported on DeRosa's controversial comments, he was one of the participants quoted in the piece criticizing those remarks. "No man has ever spoken to me like that in my entire life," Kim said of his phone call with Cuomo. "At some point he tried to humiliate me, asking: 'Are you a lawyer? I didn't think so. You're not a lawyer.' It almost felt like in retrospect he was trying to bait me and anger me and say something inappropriate. I'm glad I didn't." Kim's wife told CNN that she had overheard parts of Kim's phone call with Cuomo last week, and described the governor as "loud" and "angry." She said she heard Cuomo say, "Who do you think you are?" as well as the words, "my wrath," and that immediately after the phone call, her husband told her: "The governor threatened to destroy my life."

More than 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients in New York state were released from hospitals into nursing homes early in the pandemic under a controversial directive that was scrapped amid criticism it accelerated outbreaks, according to new records obtained by The Associated Press. The new number of 9,056 recovering patients sent to hundreds of nursing homes is more than 40% higher than what the state health department previously released. And it raises new questions as to whether a March 25 directive from Gov. Andrew Cuomos administration helped spread sickness and death among residents, a charge the state disputes. The lack of transparency and the meting out of bits of important data has undermined our ability to both recognize the scope and severity of whats going on and address it, said Richard Mollot, the executive director of the Long Term Care Community Coalition, a residents advocacy group.

The new figures come as the Cuomo administration has been forced in recent weeks to acknowledge it has been underreporting the overall number of COVID-19 deaths among long-term care residents. It is now nearly 15,000 up from the 8,500 previously disclosed. The Cuomo administrations March 25 directive barred nursing homes from refusing people just because they had COVID-19. It was intended to free up space in hospitals swamped in the early days of the pandemic. It came under criticism from advocates for nursing home residents and their relatives, who said it had the potential to spread the virus in a state that at the time already had the nations highest nursing home death toll. State health officials contend that asymptomatic nursing home employees, not recovering COVID-19 patients, were the driving factor in nursing home outbreaks. And they have repeatedly noted that by law, nursing homes werent supposed to accept anyone they couldnt adequately care for. A leader of a California group of nursing home clinicians and administrators, however, sees New York officials as seeking to shift blame. There has never been any question in my mind that sending COVID-19 patients into completely unprepared, understaffed and underresourced nursing homes both increased transmission and led to a greater number of deaths, said Dr. Michael Wasserman, president of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine

Dr. Dave Chokshi said in a statement that he was recently tested for COVID-19 and received a positive diagnosis. "I now have mild symptoms, but they are manageable," Chokshi said, adding that he has been in touch with city contact tracers. Chokshi was named New York City health commissioner in August 2020 after Mayor Bill de Blasio clashed with the previous commissioner, Dr. Oxiris Barbot.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/30/biden-covid-vaccine-states-463953

Joe Biden promised hed bring in a competent, tested team to run the pandemic response, set ambitious vaccination targets and impose strict public health guidelines. His team arrived at the White House with a 200-page response plan ready to roll out. But instead, they have spent much of the last week trying to wrap their hands around the mushrooming crisis a process officials acknowledge has been humbling, and triggered a concerted effort to temper expectations about how quickly they might get the nation back to normal. After a week on the job, Bidens team is still trying to locate upwards of 20 million vaccine doses that have been sent to states a mystery that has hampered plans to speed up the national vaccination effort. They're searching for new ways to boost production of a vaccine stockpile that they've discovered is mostly empty. And they're nervously eyeing a series of new Covid-19 strains that threaten to derail the response.

Its the Mike Tyson quote: Everybodys got a plan until they get punched in the mouth, said one person with knowledge of the vaccine effort whos not authorized to discuss the work. They are planning. They are competent. Its just the weight of everything when you sit down in that chair. Its heavy. Biden officials leading the coronavirus response launched a series of regular briefings this week to keep the public informed on the state of the pandemic and government efforts to contain it and rush vaccines out to as many Americans as possible. But the briefings were short on details. And behind the scenes, officials say, the team was still struggling to get a handle on basic information, liaise with the career government workers who have been running the response and build out a long-term strategy for bringing and then keeping the virus under control.

Why do people feel the need to count something done under Trump admin to defend something under the a new administration. Biden said 2,000. If he wanted to count the Trump bucks he would have said 1,400 checks will go out. But the thing being forgotten is we also got 1,200 under Trump and no one thinks that should be counted in the total. For the same reason the 600 shoudn't it was a different admin that gave it.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/30/politics/stephen-lynch-tests-positive-covid/index.html

Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts, who has been vaccinated for Covid-19, tested positive for the virus on Friday afternoon and remains asymptomatic, according to his spokeswoman. "This afternoon U.S. Representative Stephen F. Lynch received a positive test result for COVID-19 after a staff member in the Congressman's Boston office had tested positive earlier in the week," Lynch's spokeswoman Molly Rose Tarpey said in a statement Friday. The Massachusetts Democrat plans to isolate and will vote by proxy in Congress over the coming week, according to Tarpey. The congressman had received a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine and had tested negative for Covid-19 before attending President Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20, Tarpey said.

Covid-19 vaccines prevent illness, but do not necessarily prevent infection. If someone tests positive and doesn't get sick, the vaccine has worked as intended. If someone tests positive within a few weeks of receiving the second dose, it may be because the vaccine hasn't yet fully kicked in.

https://www.polygon.com/movies/2021/1/29/22256360/amc-stock-price-reddit-rally-robinhood-debt-conversion

This weeks bizarre meme stock rally, which has delivered lottery-like windfalls for holders of GameStop stock, also wiped out $600 million in debt owed by the AMC theater chain. Thats because, on Wednesday, a private equity firm named Silver Lake and private equity firms are popularly considered the bad guys in this snobs-versus-slobs drama elected to convert the corporate bonds it held into AMC Entertainment Holdings stock. Although the theater chains stock price has tumbled and soared since the move, the debt relief is permanent. Just Monday, AMC was warning investors that there is substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern. The reason is obvious: the COVID-19 pandemic has savaged the movie theater business, and the broader stimulus, payroll, and recovery actions by the U.S. government have done little to prop it up.

Wiping out more than half-a-billion dollars in debt, though, should take a lot of pressure off AMC in the short term. A week ago, it was not crazy to think this company was doomed, Bloombergs Matt Levine wrote on Thursday. Now it is entirely possible that it will survive and thrive and show movies in movie theaters for decades to come because everyone went nuts and bought meme stocks this week.

Lmao
