https://www.texastribune.org/2020/07/07/texas-prison-coronavirus-deaths/

James Allen Smith was only supposed to be at a Texas prison for a matter of months, sentenced to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program after he pled guilty to a repeat DWI offense in January. But in May, while in a Huntsville prison where Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials halted almost all movement as inmates and employees fell ill with the new coronavirus, the 73-year-old retired teacher from Bastrop also contracted the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease. Instead of coming home to his family after completing a short program, Smith died in prison custody on June 11. We never thought this would happen, Lani Davis, Smiths 26-year-old granddaughter, told The Texas Tribune last week, shock still evident in her voice. He was going to get out, he was being fine. He was only sentenced to six months.

At least 84 Texas state prisoners have died after catching the new coronavirus, according to TDCJ reports. The death toll, which the agencys leader called unprecedented, is the second highest among state prison systems. Those who have died include men serving life sentences, a man who was days away from his release date, and others, like Smith, who were only supposed to be locked up for a short time. But while some states have moved to release more parole-eligible prisoners or those nearing the end of their sentences, Texas practices have gone unchanged. The spread of COVID in the prison system has shown that a period of incarceration for a number of people has turned into a death sentence, said Peter Steffensen, a staff attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project. That doesnt change the fact that the parole board and the governor are both empowered to take a number of different steps that they could have and should have months ago. Nearly 9,500 of about 131,000 people in Texas state prisons have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to TDCJ reports. Though the number of confirmed active cases went down in recent weeks, the agency continues to report more deaths.

TopicThe fight once there is a coronavirus vaccine will get ugly
BlueTigerLion
07/09/20 2:28:40 AM

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-07-08/the-global-fight-over-covid-19-vaccines-will-get-very-ugly

For most people, a vaccine against the coronavirus cant come soon enough, as it will be the only tolerable way to achieve herd immunity. And yet, theres still a danger that humanity will fail in its quest to control Covid-19. The culprit wouldnt necessarily be the medical complexity, fiendish as it is, of engineering a vaccine. It could also be the ensuing politics surrounding inoculation. The fights will be intense, irrational and sometimes nasty. The first problem is that even after we become confident that a particular vaccine is effective and safe, there wont be enough for everyone. So well have to decide: Who should get the shots first? Who wont get any? These questions will come up between countries, and within them. Given the right leadership, the world would overcome these difficulties with dignity and wisdom. Forty years ago, for example, as the world shivered in a Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, humanity nonetheless managed to unite and eradicate smallpox. Today, however, the odds for health-care multilateralism are bad. Rich nations will try to outbid poor ones in securing supplies of the vaccine. And someone like U.S. President Donald Trump may not necessarily share a scarce vaccine invented and made in America with other countries.

If these dilemmas are political dynamite, they may end up looking trivial next to whats sure to be the biggest showdown: the standoff between scientific rationality and conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories have already led to anti-vaxxers refusing to get shots against measles, thus compromising the already-achieved herd immunity and causing new outbreaks of this deadly disease. The same could happen when a coronavirus vaccine becomes available. The threshold for herd immunity against Covid-19 is estimated at between 55% and 82% of a given population. But only about 50% of Americans say theyd get vaccinated.
