The American Civil Liberties Union is challenging the state of Michigan over its handling of the state's sex offender registry. In 2016, the 6th Circuit Court ruled that aspects of Michigans Sex Offender Registry Act, SORA, were unconstitutional. The courts opinion specifically noted portions of the act which allowed the state to retroactively impose punishments on individuals without due process. The state of Michigan appealed the circuit court's ruling, sending Does vs Snyder to the U.S. Supreme Court. In October 2017, the Supreme Court decided not to take up the case, upholding the 6th Circuit Court's unanimous decision. It has now been nearly two years since the original ruling and the Legislature has failed to make any reforms to the law.

At the end of June, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against Michigan to force the state to finally make changes to its sex offender registry. Miriam Aukerman, senior staff attorney for ACLU-Michigan, and state Senator Rick Jones, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee joined Statesides Lester Graham to discuss what changes they think are necessary and why nothing has changed. The states Sex Offender Registry Act was first enacted in 1994. Aukerman said the original law established a confidential law-enforcement database of individuals' addresses, and simply required that those individuals update law enforcement if they moved.

Aukerman says that there have been various changes to the law throughout the years, but the most extreme changes came in 2006 and 2011. In 2006, the Legislature passed a statute prohibiting individuals on the registry from living, working, or loitering within 1,000 feet of a school. So what this statute does is it makes much of the state unavailable for where people can live, where they can work, and it makes it a crime to do things like go to your childs graduation or a school play or sports event," explained Aukerman. It can also be a challenge for individuals to locate where those 1,000 foot zones begin and end. In Grand Rapids, about 50% of the city is off limits to people who are on the registry, but nobody can tell you where that is, Aukerman said. So people live in constant fear of not knowing can I take my child to this park? My employer has sent me to go work in this other office today, can I actually go work there? The 2011 additions to the law created a three-tier system based entirely on offenses, and many individuals were required to register for life. Before 2011, roughly a quarter of people were on the registry for life. After 2011, 3/4 of the people on the registry were.

Ive also now forwarded this information to Federal services and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, an organization who pushes for the laws to be passed in states that requires techs to relay information found on digital devices to be turned into the local police. I talked with a live rep and after providing details on his case informed me that they take these reports seriously and will be contacting Mr. Cavanaughs local authorities and prosecutors in the case to directly inquire on the these new found pieces of information.

That's how bullying was dealt with for most kids in the late 90's early 2000's, now kids are afraid to deliver that ass beating or to fight dirty when tormented.

Sad and it's even sadder we have kids killing themselves over bullying instead of lashing out in anger and violence against these bullies, modern kids need to take a page from "Cobra Kai" and fight.

My guess is maybe they don't want to get suspended. Other kids were bullied and fought back and it was always the same. It doesn't matter who started it you both fought so you both get in trouble. In my situation the security guard didn't see him hit me and the other guy was bleeding so I ended up being only one in trouble.

What did he have on his PC?

Nothing that was his actually. He doesn't even know what was there. He was fixing someone's computer and he had their HD in his and they didn't delete anything before giving it to him. The weird thing is that the police never actually told him what they found because they said it got corrupted or something. I think he also said that they legally they didn't have a right to search his property anyway.

It's pretty stupid. The law has a lot of laws that actually protect pedophiles which is fucking disgusting. Not only are they protected but they get hardly any time locked up. Even when you rape a fucking innocent kid the laws are more lenient on you than they are with other crimes that don't have nearly the same impact on a person's life.

He copped to a plea because of the timing of it. They did it like that on purpose it seems. Because they mismanaged things it seems like he can get it removed from his record either this year or early next year. The case itself seems more like an embarrassment and inconvenience to him than real punishment.
