BlueTigerLion 01/01/20 2:29:53 PM #1 | https://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/crime/2019/12/23/salem-keizer-oregon-crime-rape-prison/2735509001/ A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to raping three Keizer teens. Joseph Myers, of Salem, was living in Keizer when he was charged with 12 counts of third-degree rape, one count of third-degree sodomy and three counts of unlawful delivery of marijuana to a minor. According to court records, Myers caught the attention of Keizer police after his father called dispatch to report that his son had sex with "half a dozen underage girls." He said he tried to help his son and get him to stop, but he called police after catching Myers, then 20 years old, talking on the phone to a 12-year-old girl. The call led the Keizer Police Department to conduct a months-long investigation into Myers, eventually uncovering the disclosures of six different underage girls. An indictment was later filed naming three different victims. According to court records, Myers targeted young runaways and would supply the teens with marijuana. He met one of his victims when she was 15. Another was 14. A third was 13 years old when Myers first had sexual intercourse with her. Due to the victims being under 16, the acts were considered third-degree rape. Myers reportedly had sex with the girls multiple times, starting in January 2017 and continuing until April 2018. When questioned about the conduct, Myers at first said his victims had "crushes" on him and denied doing anything illegal. But when police confronted him with physical evidence text messages and photographs Myers said, "I wish it never took place ... there is not much explaining I can do," according to court records. Contact with some of his victims continued after Myers' arrest and release from jail, with one teen telling police she messaged Myers through others' accounts and met with him at a park. According to court records, Myers could have faced more than 12 years in prison. Habekost said Myers is amenable to treatment, and probation would serve the "community safety interest by promoting offender reformation." He said that Myers readily admits to his crimes and "understands that he caused emotional hurt and betrayed trust because of his sexual activities." Prosecutor Alexandra Overton argued for a prison sentence of four years. She cited Myers' numerous victims both named and unnamed as well as his continued disregard for the law he demonstrated while awaiting trial. Overton's described Myers' actions as "egregious and said he was not a good candidate for probation. "(He) admittedly victimized three separate victims in this matter," she said in a sentencing memorandum. "Numerous times. When he knew it was wrong. So wrong, in fact, that he continued to manipulate these victims, ask them to 'cover for him,' and continued to prey on them." Overton added that the victims had difficulties at home and were all runaways. She said Myers preyed on their vulnerabilities and naivety in addition to giving them marijuana and a place to hide-out when the ran away from home, knowing "they had no one else to turn to." She conceded that Myers' lack of criminal history warranted a shorter prison term than what could be a 150-month sentence, but said this lack of history could be attributed to the fact that he was only 20 when he was arrested. During his sentencing late last week, Marion County Judge Channing Bennett ordered Myers to be lodged in prison for 14 months and to serve five years of probation. He was ordered to register as a sex offender and enter into sex offender treatment. Under his sentence, Myers could be eligible for a reduced sentence or work release. --- Hey now. |

Topic | GameStop Sales Continue To Plummet In Its Third Quarter |
BlueTigerLion 12/21/19 8:59:39 PM #1 | https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/12/14/gamestops-q3-was-just-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-wou.aspx No one should have expected GameStop's third-quarter earnings report to contain any good news, as there are no catalysts for growth, and yet since mid-August the video game retailer's stock has doubled in value. Now that its earnings are out and they're just as bad as imagined, the market seems shocked -- shocked! -- at the outcome, as investors sent GameStop's stock 20% lower in after-hours trading. GameStop reported third-quarter currency-adjusted revenue tumbled 24.7% to $1.4 billion as hardware sales plummeted over 45%, software sales were cut by a third, and both accessories and pre-owned games were each down 13% for the period. Once again, the only segment that grew was its collectibles business: Sales increased just over 4% from last year. And GameStop has to be really upset Disney made a rare miscalculation about the popularity of its new Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian, because there are no Funko POP "Baby Yoda" action figures available for Christmas. The figurine is available for pre-order, but it won't be shipped till the spring. GameStop has had a long-standing relationship with Funko and its POP figurines are a big part of the retailer's collectibles business, so this segment could reasonably see a nice, well, pop itself in the fourth quarter if demand for the Baby Yoda dolls is as great as many believe. Take note, though: CEO George Sherman warns the retailer's more important game console business doesn't look hopeful for the immediate future as the useful life of existing game systems winds down. He said the cause of GameStop's dismal earnings was "the unprecedented decline in new hardware sales seen across the market as the current generation of gaming consoles reach the end of their lifecycle and consumers delay their spending in anticipation of new hardware releases." Worse, he doesn't see the retailer's fortunes improving until the fourth quarter of 2020 when the newest models from Microsoft and Sony get launched. There was no reason for GameStop's stock to rise like it did over the past few months, as there was never any hope of improvement, and the third-quarter report shows there was reason to be skeptical. Now investors have been put on notice a recovery is unlikely until late next year. RIP Gamestop --- Hey now. |

BlueTigerLion 12/21/19 4:53:09 PM #1 | https://www.wbay.com/content/news/Church-intern-arrested-on-child-pornography-charges-566184131.html A Green Bay man who said he wants to become a pastor was charged Friday with three counts of possession of child pornography. Gaston Parker Pechholt, 20, appeared in Brown County court Friday afternoon, where bond was set at $25,000. Each charge carries up to 25 years in prison if convicted, with a mandatory minimum prison time of 3 years. According to the criminal complaint: Brown County Sheriff's Office investigators found three videos on an iPad belonging to Pechholt. The videos were prepubescent girls, including one who appears to be 6 to 8 years old, showing off their naked bodies and genitals. It appeared each girl made the video herself. Kik, which makes instant messaging software, alerted law enforcement that a user shared an image of child pornography back in January. The tip made its way to the Brown County Sheriff's Office, which used a search warrant to trace the user's IP address to an iPad at a rented Green Bay home. Sheriff's investigators went to the home. The man who answered the door said he didn't own an iPad but his roommate did. His roommate, Pechholz, was at work at Celebration Church, where he was an intern. Pechholz let investigators look at the contents of his iPad and eventually admitted he has a pornography addiction. He said Instagram and Kik both canceled his accounts because of his pornography activity. He said he started looking at child porn when he was 15, first because he imagined himself to be a vigilante, but then became aroused by it. He said he never produced any images or videos of child pornography but knew it was illegal to possess or view it. He also said he would cooperate with investigators and give them information about the websites where he found child pornography. Celebration Church Pastor Mark Gungor provided Action 2 News with this statement: We were very saddened to hear about the arrest of an intern associated with Celebration Church on the charges of possessing child pornography. (He actually was an intern for Transition One, an organization supported by the church. He did not work directly for the church.) Pornography is a terrible poison that is affecting the lives of millions of men and women, creating addictions, destroying marriages, and often times leading to destructive behaviors. --- Hey now. |
