It was real good. Dont know if Id go THAT far, but definitely one of my favorite 2019 releases. Itd go behind Sekiro and Luigis Mansion 3 for me, at least.

Done! Really liked it. Few nitpicks but overall a fun experience with good character work and some really neat ideas. That final battle was a trip.

That said, I was thinking Id try to 100% the game, but seeing that there is no NG+ or unlockables of any sort, Im not sure Im super compelled to play through everything again to pick up some more trinkets. I wanted to get all my upgrades, though! I just wish there was any incentive.

^It sure did. The sequence where Hugo and Nicholas stalk you around was mad creepy. Boss fight there was a little unwieldy, but darn cool.

Halfway through what sure feels like the grand finale RIP Rodrick :(

One thing that has really pleasantly surprised me, given how insanely grim the opening chapter was, is how heartfelt the story is overall and the bond of the friends you make along the way. This little band of plucky kids against an unfathomably dark presence reminds me just a hair of It in that way. I was kinda worried it would just be torture porn, albeit hella ambient torture porn, for the first couple chapters.

Ah I know just the one. Yeah that level itself did feel too long for sure. There's probably 1 other part of the game I feel the same about, but that's not bad overall.
Still to come or am I past it?

the main problem with the one I mentioned is not only is it long in terms of sheer minutes, but its also basically 100% crouching and hiding under tables with the somewhat suspect stealth detection, and waiting for patrol patterns. No tools, no real puzzles, nothing until you find Beatrice which, like, youre almost done by then.

Glad you're enjoying it. IMO the length felt pretty ideal. Enough stuff opens up as you go along to keep it fresh. Doesn't overstay its welcome.
Mhm. I think a few of the individual levels feel a hair overlong (that last one I mentioned where you control Hugo felt positively endless) but the overall story and campaign has felt about right.

Finished Chapter 4. Luring the pig to feed him to the rats... feels bad man :(

Hugo is sort of annoying sometimes but considering you're pretty much permanently chained to a five year old, he's pretty unobtrusive as escort quests go. Voice acting thus far is excellent and the game is fucking gorgeous on ultra.

I don't know, I really enjoyed The Park but it was *just* over 2 hours long so you couldn't qualify for a refund through Steam.
That's a good example of being TOO short, imo. Though, I guess it depends on the price. How much was it originally?

Right now it's under $10, and that's all good. I think a game that takes you two hours to play through once and has very little incentive to play through it again should probably come in at around $15. Maybe $20. A trip to the movies.

Pretty sure those fall into big game category tho. They take most people 40+ hours first playthrough. I imagine TC means short like Halo to Last of Us type short.

I agree, but I still won't pay 60$ or something I won't get 40+ hours out of on first playthrough. I'll wait til that's at least halved.
I don't think FromSoft's games are 40 hour investments unless you're doing NG+, especially Sekiro, but even if they don't count, I'm still with ya. Give me a tight well-crafted campaign with excellent gameplay. Then I can decide if I want to engage in new game plus content, go for 100% completion, or move on with my life.

I kind of agree. I think there's a point where a game can be "too short" to merit a $60 price tag, certainly, but more and more as I get older, I find myself more drawn to playing a game like Sekiro or a Soulsborne 3-4 times than I am to playing a huge open world game once.

I keep wanting to get sucked into one of these massive, sprawling worlds, because they can be really impressive, but I guess I sorta like a clear set of goals and relatively tight parameters.

1) I stopped following AC's modern day story sometime around AC2 Brotherhood. Will this game catch me up well enough to understand what's going on? I seem to recall hearing about some kind of soft reset to that storyline at some point, or taking it out of focus, or something.

2) Are the sidequests meaty/worth doing or mostly busy work? So far I've just been doing enough side quests to hit recommended levels for the next main story event, and they've been okay but not remarkable.

Or, if you'd rather, what's your "minimum FPS" where you'll chase quality up to that point?

I know some people are purists for FPS, but even with a 144hz monitor, I usually find that if I can pull off 1440p on full ultra settings and still get consistently 30-60fps, I prefer it to going low enough to push above 100. I find it kinda difficult to notice as big of a gulf between 30fps and 60fps as I do between medium/high and ultra, though I'm not much of a shooter guy and my understanding is that's where it really comes into play.

EDIT: Probably worth noting I have a freesync monitor, which may be why I don't really notice much if it drops from 60 to around 45-50 under stress.

The Christmas sales got me and I added a bunch of games to my already expansive backlog like a CHUMP

Recent additions:
-Witcher 3
-Red Dead Redemption 2
-Spiderman (PS4)
-Rise of the Tomb Raider
-Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Notables already in the backlog:
-AC Origins
-AC Odyssey
-Breath of the Wild (kinda, I put in a ton of hours when this first launched but mostly just fucked around and didn't accomplish anything in the story, then real life stuff happened and I got distracted)
-Divinity: Original Sin II
-Skyrim (at this point I'm kinda doubting if I'll ever get around to this one, I try like once a year and it never seems to grab me, but I've never given it a ton of time)
-Fallout 4
-Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

It is objectively extremely smartly written, but I'll admit it took me until about halfway through the first act to "get it." I don't mean that in a you just don't understaaaand way, I mean the tone of the show and the self-awareness of some of the stuff that comes off as cringier at the jump. Kinda had to get into it.

The wordcraft throughout as well as the use of recurring musical themes and motifs is just fucking legendary, though, and I'm still catching new stuff a couple years on.

Yeah, this has been a hard part of growing up for me seeing companies like Blizzard become more corporate... still overall good and polished but missing some soul along the way. FromSofts games (along with Hollow Knight) kind of filled the Diablo-sized hole in my heart, despite being very different in gameplay. FromSoft might someday fade too, and Ill hope for someone to replace them.

Yeah, I think that's safe to say. No developer has so consistently transported me like FromSoft has in years and years. Their games remind me of being a kid, getting totally absorbed in a world. So good and not an ounce of cynicism (for lack of a better word) in their games. There's something really pure about it. DS1, DS3, BB, and Sekiro are all in a shortlist of my favorite games since 2010.

Big ups to Team Cherry as well for Hollow Knight, for similar reasons, but that's just one game. Nintendo remains very very strong too.
