if youre playing the witcher for the combat then best to quit right now. not to say its bad, but it never gets better than serviceable. that isnt why the game has garnered so much praise and its not going to be apparent why its recieved a majority of that praise in just a few hours of gameplay.

you cant really compare this game to the souls-like games,. they are VERY different in what they are trying to do.

Crossbow is more a utility weapon.
This. TC, while the bow can get headshots for OHKOs (there's even an achievement on this against a certain enemy), it's best used for killing underwater foes, where it only takes a few shots -- at least on enemies around or under your level. When you're using a boat, you can also use the bow to shoot enemies clinging to your craft, staving off damage. Many players never learned this, so be sure to put it to work, lest ye sink in the middle of nowhere and have to swim.

My absolute favorite part of the game so far are the dialogue options. Theyre as fleshed out as fallout new Vegas but got the animations of fallout 4.

fuck being nice to rude NPCs. Theyre getting the fist

Is there no way to parry monsters? Can you only parry humans?

also are all monsters and animals weak to silver?

idk about animals, but yea, you should be using the silver sword on monsters.

but there are specific oils that help you hurt specific monsters a lot more than you would otherwise

Running through the game on Switch. I forgot how slow the beginning of this game was. Just got to Velen. Leveling in the beginning is such a pain in the ass.

Animals should be iron.

I remember in the expansions you can parry some things, like boars in Hearts of Stone. Don't honestly remember about monsters in the base game though.

Idk if Im doing something wrong but majority of enemies I face are red lettered which I assume are over leveled for me

but yeah, most enemies seem to be sponges and Im finding myself having to frequently retreat and heal

i picked death and broken bones as my difficulty level

Im only level 2 and I just finished killing the griffin

I've started Witcher 3 like five times and always stop an hour or two in. Dunno why. I really need to give it an honest attempt but it doesn't grab me from the jump.

Combat works decently enough. Its very floaty but you just need to know how to dodge properly.

Also build choice matters a lot. I recommend combat/alchemy split build at DM difficulty. The DLC is really the best part of this game, both of them.

Yes, red means they're stronger level than you. Just means you should avoid that area until you gain a few levels yourself, not much else you can do about that.

If the enemy is at your level or lower then you shouldn't have problems defeating them; when facing groups it helps to use signs, especially Quen, to give yourself that extra advantage.

It is a pain in the beginning but you'll be thankful you went with a harder difficulty if you think the combat is bad now.

Note that just because an enemy is higher level than you, doesn't mean you can't defeat it. You just need to play smart, either by knowing their tactics (enemy types will have their own unique AI and rhythms) or preparing beforehand with decoctions and oils. I remember when I first played, I took down a high-level griffin or something guarding a treasure chest in Velen...after thirty minutes. Liberal use of Quen can save n00b Geralts, so be sure to use that if you're having trouble.

Speaking of fighting enemies, your gear will often be turned into garbage. I don't recommend wasting time repairing that stuff in the early going, as loot in this game is almost always levelled. You can often soldier on with powered-down weapons and then just replace it when you find something slightly better.

...and speaking of finding gear, you may have noticed that some chests give you decoction/oil/etc. recipes instead of (or sometimes in addition to) other stuff. These chests are fixed locations, and I don't believe they give duplicates, so always seek 'em out. I made a map of those located in White Orchard if you want it.

It's really not too hard to figure out enemies' attack patterns after several encounters. For instance, I think drowner types will do a hop step backwards before lunging forward. Part of survival is just keeping the throngs in your POV, as some (like wolves) will try to flank you.

She's described as pale skinned in the books.

The actress in the TV series is too dark, she's half Indian I believe. And her face is too young and weak. And her voice too. Everytime she acts mean and badass, it just makes me cringe.

She's nothing like the yennefer we know.

I think Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor and Middle Earth Shadow of War have better combat but The Witcher 3 is ok. Just started it myself and been exploring the map, have not seen anything that really impressed me yet but the story seems interesting.

Being an RPG though combat is not suppose to be the focus, choices, characters, and story are.

I never had an issue with the combat but I'm fine with the criticism, it's just personal preference. I always thought Geralt should be swift and nimble. I love dodging (not rolling) just about every attack, I love all those near misses and staying on my toes.
After I started noticing the patterns I would purposefully try to get to the middle of enemy encampments to trigger full agro. Man it's fun taking down 5-6 tightly packed enemies, but you also gotta learn when you're gonna need a few yrden spells to slow enemies down. And that is what I like best of the Witcher, you have to know what to use and when. Or you can play on a lower difficulty and spin to win, whatever, that's not my thing but if you absolutely hate the combat go ahead it's your story.

Also Quen will be your friend when you need the heals (eventually).

Depending on what difficulty you play on, you can recover health (IIRC) by meditating. After a battle, just chill out for an hour and you're good to go. There's also some kind of perk that prolongs healing potions or something, so that's good when you're on higher difficulties.

Does it really matter though?

seems like an easy game to not worry too much about what you upgrade

what are considered to be the must have skills?

My difficulty doesnt do healing on meditation

I attempted a level 6 quest at level 3 and literally every single enemy was a red skull and my weapons were doing shit damage to them. So this statement seems to be false

What you upgrade doesn't really matter that much, but I think it's more fun with builds. I played through the base game with combat/signs but then for the DLC I focused almost entirely on Alchemy.
