Given 4chan tried pretty hard to put Hitler over for the first few hours of his Rivalry Rumble match and had made serious percentage cuts to get BJ and Hitler up to 45.5% before the ASV buried them and they gave up? Hitler probably wins the contest if they still care.

But after all the talk about Nazis supporting Trump and what happened in Charlottesville, there's no way Hitler will be allowed in even if the guidelines would indicate he qualifies. 4chan rallying for Hitler is not going to be seen as "in extremely poor taste but basically harmless" anymore.

Most people on this site are going to have some experience with anime but actual anime fans are a minority. We know how much this site likes the nostalgic games of its childhood; that's going to be even worse in a medium that most of the site isn't very deep into and may not have watched much of since they were a teenager. Anime being widely and legally available on streaming services over the past few years has probably helped a bit but the sheer amount of options is going to prevent anything new shown there being worth much and again, at that point we're talking 30 year olds experiencing something rather than 13-year olds.

I think anime entrants on gamefaqs would only be potentially worthwhile (everything outside DBZ and Pokemon might still turn out to be fodder) if they had mass exposure on television in people's formative years when the biggest mainstream hits (Pokemon/Digimon/DragonBallZ/Sailor Moon/Yu-Gi-Oh) were available on your local station and Toonami was a popular mainstream thing. If it wasn't on U.S. TV in the decade or so between Pokemon/DBZ/Sailor Moon and Death Note, I think it's practically guaranteed to be almost worthless. Anything that requires you to have watched it online or on DVD is probably an instant-lose. I'd strongly consider taking CATS over Haruhi and Jojo.

Assuming you don't count Pokemon characters or similar examples, then yeah, DBZ would have most of the top manga/anime characters for sure.

Think gamefaqs is too old for Naruto to be worth much. First episode didn't air on U.S. television until 2005, by which point the average gamefaqs user as of last year's age poll was 17. And I don't think much of the site are hardcore enough fans that you can expect them to have watched one particular show as an adult for hundreds of episodes, no matter how popular.

I'd figure Sailor Moon, Yami Yugi, or Spike Spiegel would be the contenders for top non-DBZ anime characters? They could all potentially flop hard too; depends on what this site would value in a non-gaming medium over a dozen years since most have been seriously into any of their franchises. Also how widely watched Cowboy Bebop is here; the former two would at least have nigh-universal recognizability. Sailor Moon's probably closer to the nostalgic sweet spot for the site's demographics but I'm not sure she'd go over that well on a ~90% male site.

Sonic, Mega Man, Cloud, Sephiroth, and Crono have are all 20+ years past their heyday and their still among the strongest contests have to offer.

I'm in the minority, but I got into Mega Man through Mega Man 64, Mega Man Battle Network, and Mega Man Xtreme, which all released around the same time. I made sure to play the NES games afterwards because I loved all the other ones I played.

Nah, Crono's not 20 years past his heydey. That was probably the early 2000's. Final Fantasy Chronicles in 2001 was probably big for him, but SNES emulation getting better and more widespread over time might have been even more important.

This is pretty clearly a result of the NES never really catching on in the U.K.

This is probably also why Alucard is weak over there. Without the NES entries being particularly well known, the Castlevania name didn't mean as much and so fewer people were interested in Symphony of the Night, but SotN was big enough to make him not totally pathetic..

Mega Man X4 has about as many gamefaqs owners/ratings as X2 and X3 and it's average score is on par or better. I think most would agree it's at least better than X3.

Things do get sketchier after that, though. I still haven't quite gotten around to X5, which is supposedly at least decent.
