Arti 02/20/18 10:12:37 PM #44 | 6. Night in the Woods Infinite Fall PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, Switch Released February 21, 2017 So originally, I wasn't going to buy this game until it went on sale on PS4, but when I found out Tiny Metal wasn't all it was hyped up to be, I took the money I was going to spend on that and bought Night in the Woods instead. It was definitely a great decision. Night in the Woods tells the story of Mae, a college dropout who comes back to her home of Possum Springs to reconnect with her old friends, finding out how much has changed since she left. The highlight of the game is the story and the characters, and it's presented in a way that makes you want to explore and find all there is to do in this small town. I always appreciate trophy lists that go the extra mile to have you look for extra dialogue, similar to how Grim Fandango Remastered did it. Night in the Woods follows suit, putting practically every extra event (except the ones added in the Weird Autumn update) connected to at least one trophy. Even the extra roguelike game on the computer has two trophies tied to it. It's a great way to make everyone go the extra distance and find all the game has to offer, and this game really rewards you with its extra scenes. So far, I've only done Gregg's route (and I'll freely admit that Bane's Discord avatar factored into this decision). I'll definitely go through again on Bea's route and then try to get the other trophies for the platinum as well. There's a lot of extra events that I have yet to see and I'm excited to find out what is still in the game. My only problem with the game is that third song in the band practice, I still can't seem to get the hang of it, even with all the rhythm game experience I have. I'll try again in the 3rd play through since in the 2nd I'll be failing them all for another trophy. also gregg rulz ok. Arti 02/17/18 9:16:47 PM #40 | 7. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony Spike Chunsoft / NIS America PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, PC Released September 26, 2017 Fun fact: the above 2016 list in the poll has eight games I played on handhelds (which did not include INSIDE and FFXV). This is the only game on the 2017 top 10 list I played on a handheld, so if you're expecting to see Fire Emblem, DW Godseekers or Fate/extella, sorry about that. After the disaster that was Ultra Despair Girls, we finally get another regular Danganronpa game. V3 is very good in that regard, which is always a plus. It (thankfully) does not take much from either UDG or the spinoff anime, relying mainly on just references to the first two games, though it's perfectly fine to be played as a first game in the series. Overall, including the ending, I felt that the story and characters were much better than the other two games. One of the weakest features in the previous Danganronpa games was the postgame stuff, which was usually just an extra mode to max out the bonds. Danganronpa 2 also had a Monomi minigame which is just as annoying to play through. While V3 also has the bond maxing mode, the casino also can be played outside of the story mode which has some interesting minigames in it. The real prize is the board game and dungeon crawling combo - you use cards of the characters from all three games to traverse a dungeon while training them in the board game. The nice thing about the board game is it has special events between characters from all the games, which is cool to see them interact if you've played through all of them. It's probably the best VN of this year and is an absolute must if you've played and liked the previous two games in the series. Also, I'm not sure if the PlayStation 4 or PC versions add anything significant either, but it's perfectly playable on the Vita (though you need to download an extra patch for better voice quality) and cheaper there as well :) --- insert something about BKSheikah here http://backloggery.com/articuno2001/sig.gif |

Arti 02/11/18 4:37:41 PM #21 | 9. Puyo Puyo Tetris Sega PlayStation 4, Switch, PC Released April 25, 2017 It's been quite a while since a Puyo Puyo game has been released overseas. Not counting the Puyo Puyo minigame in Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX, it's been 13 years since one has been released. Combining it with Tetris just makes it more challenging and a better game overall. Like most Puyo Puyo games, it has a very funny story mode. This one has the three Puyo Puyo protagonists teaming up with some Tetris characters in order to fix a bunch of problems in both of their respective universes. The adventure mode gives a good introduction to all modes using both types of play. Versus mode is the standard for each, Party mode adds in powerups and is pretty unexciting overall, Big Bang is the quick-clear mode used to clear as much puyos or tetriminos that are preset in a way that makes them easy to clear (and is the way I won most of my online matches with Puyo Puyo Big Bang), Swap swaps between both a puyo board and a tetris board, and Fusion puts them together on a single board where tetriminos get pushed down below puyos. While I took many hours to grind out 100,000 puyos in Big Bang mode for the platinum trophy and did not have much fun doing that, I did enjoy playing through the adventure mode, especially the extra levels where the story turns into a few comedy storylines. The multiplayer modes are also very well done, and I had a good amount of plays due to the trophy requirement for playing ranked matches. Some of the Japanese players I played were extremely crazy at the game, though. I'll never be that good at either mode. If you like puzzle games, there's no real reason to pass up on Puyo Puyo Tetris, and with its release on PC later this month, you already have a platform to play it on as well! --- insert something about BKSheikah here http://backloggery.com/articuno2001/sig.gif |

Arti 02/09/18 10:52:06 PM #18 | 10. What Remains of Edith Finch Giant Sparrow PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC Released April 25, 2017 I played The Unfinished Swan for the first time back in 2016 thanks to the Game of the Month topic here on Board 8, and I liked the storyline and gameplay (as well as its unique control scheme when using a Vita's remote play with the PS4). So, when downloading What Remains of Edith Finch, I expected a good storyline, and got a very good one in response. What Remains of Edith Finch stars the titular character who explores the Finch house, learning about the lives and deaths of her many family members throughout the last five generations. Each person's story is told in a different way, from a comic-book style to a camera session in the wilderness. Each story ends in the death or disappearance of each family member, which Edith records and narrates over the course of the game. I found that while I definitely thought some stories include were well done, some just go off the deep end, like Molly's story. I especially like how both Barbara's and Lewis' stories were told, however, the latter of those two being the true highlight of the game. It was also nice to see the prior game, The Unfinished Swan, get a reference As a final note, that house is the craziest thing ever. Each person has their own bedroom and it is never repurposed, so the house just keeps growing as more people enter the family. The later rooms in the house are built on what is already a really large house just adds to how crazy this game reaches for, but it still works very well and has one of the best stories of 2017. --- insert something about BKSheikah here http://backloggery.com/articuno2001/sig.gif |

Arti 02/08/18 7:46:50 PM #16 | So I was going to post the next part of the topic last night. Instead, I fell asleep and woke up at 2 AM. 'whoops' Well, let's get this list on the way. Honorable Mentions Everybody's Golf (2017) The latest entry in the Hot Shots Golf series, rebranded into its overseas name and given a pretty nice opening song by Owl City. Originally, I liked the game and enjoyed playing through the new courses, but two things dragged this down. It's actually way too easy compared to previous titles - the last course in World Invitational is an absolute monster to get good scores. With custom clubs in this game, the courses become nothing too hard to do well on. Second, it takes a lot of grinding to get to the better parts of the game - the last course is locked until you beat the game, and you're stuck on the first course for too long. With only five courses not counting DLC, you'll be sick of the easy first course way before you get out of there. The game should have been more open from the start. Still, it's a fun way to spend a little time once you get past that point. Fate/grand order The mobile Fate game finally comes over two years after the Japanese release, and so far I've enjoyed my time with it. It's got a more in-depth story than any other F2P mobile game that I've played, which is a nice change of pace from my usual rhythm mobile game. I've also been lucky at drawing some good Servants in the beginning, like Waver (though I missed Gilgamesh and Okita). Another thing this game does well is regular big-scale events. Some require a lot of grinding, but it gives you an excuse to keep playing the game, something some mobile games have yet to do. I've cleared all the story up to this point and am interested on their take on America's history in the next Singularity. Seeing them butcher it should be fun. God Wars: Future Past This relatively unknown title is a strategy RPG taking place in feudal Japan. However, the game almost completely borrows its level up system from Final Fantasy Tactics, having job points and an advanced job tree for getting to the powerful jobs (the main character even has Throw Stone and a self-heal in his beginning skills). The only thing different is that you can't recruit your own characters, but you get up to four pretty quickly and one is a fucking bear. That alone is a great reason to play this. Also, each character can equip three jobs at once - one is locked towards each character's special class, but the other two are freely customizable. It's nice to be able to level two up at once. Life is Strange: Before the Storm This prequel to the original Life is Strange uncovers how Chloe and Rachel met before the events in Life is Strange happens. Just like the original game, there are several choices that create a different storyline when you play the game multiple times. There's also collectibles - Chloe doesn't use a camera so she instead takes out a marker and writes graffiti on various objects. There was a change in the voice actors from the original game, but it's honestly not a big deal - I only really noticed Chloe (but her new VA still does a great job) and David from my run through. Splatoon 2 It's Splatoon, on the Switch! I really enjoyed my time with Splatoon on the Wii U so this was an easy purchase. However, it's honestly seems like just an expansion to the original Splatoon, and I actually prefer the map on the second screen the way the Wii U did it. I participated in a few Splatfests until I felt I had my fill again, and shelved the game for another day. I might pick it up in the future, though. #10 tomorrow. --- insert something about BKSheikah here http://backloggery.com/articuno2001/sig.gif |
