Phantom Breaker: Omnia (PS4)

This game is apparently the first game in its series, and after playing Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds twice I still had no idea what was going on in it - this game did a good job of filling in the gaps of what was actually happening there. The English dub is also a welcome surprise as most games like this would never get one.

As for the fighting game itself, I'm not very good at fighting games and with the multiple modes that each character can use I did get confused pretty quickly. I eventually did get most of the trophies and finished two of the story modes, as well as the arcade mode, in less than five hours. The platinum doesn't seem that difficult either, so I might grab that as well.

Superdimension Neptune VS Sega Hard Girls (Vita)

Another spinoff of the Neptunia series, this is a crossover with Sega's own series of console girls known as the Sega Hard Girls. Only the Neptunia characters from Planeptune are represented here, each paired with one of the Sega characters that correspond with them (like Nepgear and Game Gear are paired together, for instance). IF and a Sega maker are the MCs of the game, going through the different eras and recruiting the CPUs and Hard Girls throughout history.

As for the game itself, if you've played any Neptunia game you've probably seen a good number of the levels already. The only difference is the medals and baseballs hidden away in each level to encourage exploration, which is a pretty good addition. Some dungeons show up in multiple eras and offer some different routes through the stage, which can be interesting - though most of these just end up being copies of themselves and just make you run through the same dungeon again.

I was impressed with the combat system and the job system in this game, probably the best of any of the games in the series that I've played so far - though you can argue it's more simplistic and easy to break (which is technically correct). Either way, it was a enjoyable fifteen hours. I'll be getting the platinum so add another ten hours onto that to probably finish it.

Since River City Girls 2 is already out, I thought I would get a move on and beat this game already. It's a good beat-em-up and I enjoyed my time playing through it, even if I saw the game over screen on average every five minutes. Haven't bought the sequel but might try it out later.

TOEM: A Photo Adventure (PS5)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80277479

TOEM: A Photo Adventure was one of the PS5 games included in PS+ Essential back in September. Finally went and played it this month, and was impressed. It's a very relaxing game, not one that I would have picked up otherwise if it wasn't on PS+. The basic premise is that the main character is tasked with finding TOEM, which is said to be at the top of a mountain peak. To get there, the main character helps out various characters throughout a number of towns with tasks using a camera, collecting stamps that can be used for a free bus ride. Game took around four hours to complete, and there's also a short DLC as well which I will probably finish sometime later.

Return of the Obra Dinn (PS4)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80273659

Return of the Obra Dinn is another indie title made by Lucas Pope after Papers, Please. I always liked Papers, Please so I thought I would also enjoy this title as well. And for a while, I think it was very interesting progressing through the mystery and finding out the certain fates of the crew members onboard. However, as the game progressed, I found many things to be annoying; mainly the inability to look at a specific death scene whenever possible (and when loading it up, the audio plays while moving in the scene, which is incredibly distracting). Also to note is the minimalist art style makes it very hard to see certain death scenes or pinpoint a cause of death - I had many people with the wrong cause of death for a good amount of time because I just couldn't see what the game wanted me to. Finally, I'll admit that I brute forced a bunch of the puzzles as some of the hints were really obtuse - I looked at the ways you were 'supposed' to figure out everyone without guessing and there was no way I was figuring some of these out, especially coupled with the art style. I did find the game to be interesting enough throughout, but in the end I was somewhat disappointed overall. I do recommend playing it at least once though - maybe at a steep discount though.

Unpacking (PS4)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80267965

An indie game where you unpack boxes with items over a person's life, from a child in 1997 and progressing through the many years of their life. It is interesting to see which items keep coming back every move, like the pig plushie which appears in all of the levels. My only complaint is how inflexible the game can get with placing certain items - there were multiple times where I completely disagreed with where the game wanted me to put some items. The platinum requires doing a few extra tasks in each year such as flushing all the toilets to unlock stickers on the menu screen, each one corresponding to a certain trophy.

It's not a very in-depth game, but it was a good four hours of content, and that's good enough for me!

Crazy Chicken Kart 2 (PS4)

Here's another in the same series above, this is a simple kart racer. There's only eight tracks and two championships so there isn't much to be done here - the only reason the platinum takes a while is that you need to play 100 races and lose at least 50 of them. Kind of dumb, but I finished it and it's done.

Crazy Chicken: Jump 'n' Run - Traps and Treasures (PS5)

An old budget 2D platformer that's been remade from a game released back in 2005, this has you cotrol a chicken through various forest and ruins levels to find a magical amulet. To get all the trophies and unlock the bonus levels, you need to collect all coins and artifacts hidden in the game, plus defeat all enemies. I did manage to collect all the items and defeat every enemy in around three hours. Still had a few problems, like this one artifact that seemed slightly out of reach (somehow jumping while punching worked). There's a second game that's been released on the Switch but not on PS4/PS5, but based on this one I probably won't buy it.

Samurai Warriors 4 (Vita)

I originally beat Samurai Warriors: Chronicles 3 last year, which focuses on a created character going through the story, with branching alternating scenarios that lead to endings that didn't actually happen in recorded history. This game tries instead to keep what actually happened during the Warring States period true, and focuses on many of the warlords of different kingdoms during this time throughout the entire Japan region. It's a lot of battles - my time in-game was close to forty hours, but it was still a fun title to go through.

Gameplay is basic Warriors gameplay, but Samurai Warriors uses the triangle button for Hyper Attacks which are ideal for clearing out large groups of mooks. The attacks bounce off of officers though, so you can't use them all the time!

There's also Chronicle Mode which I haven't done much with yet, which tasks you with creating a biography of every officer in the game. This is where most of the trophies I haven't gotten yet are found, so I'll have to go through it to complete this!

A basic third-person shooter about a bunch of schoolgirls fighting against a horde of zombies that have appeared in their school. It's apparently set in the Oneechanbara universe, as one of the characters from those games also appears in this one. Pretty basic and took around eight hours to finish all the story missions.

Granblue Fantasy: Versus (PS4)

It's the fighting game based on the gacha RPG that was given out on PS+ Essential a few months ago. It has its own story mode that would probably make more sense if I actually played Granblue Fantasy, but I don't. The story mode uses RPG stats, so it was basically just making numbers going up so you just overpower all the enemies, which is easy enough.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below (PS4)

I first started this game in 2015, played a bit around with it. Got about halfway through the story and then put it aside to play other games, wasn't very impressed with the fusion of action gameplay and Dragon Quest mechanics. Fast forward to this year, and two TrueTrophies challenges, Warboats PvP and Leap Frog finally pushed it all the way to the end. Really enjoyed using Terry who was easily the most overpowered character in the game. Still not sold on it completely, but maybe Dragon Quest Heroes 2 is better?

Four years ago I finished all the new content in Golden except for the extended epilogue, and having played the original Persona 4 already, I was satisfied and put the game down at that point. I am Setsuna (PS4)

The game is fine. It takes most of its story interpretation from Final Fantasy X and its battle system from Chrono Trigger, and fails to live up to either of those games for a few reasons. The boring, white background that persists through the entire game is a weird artistic choice that makes the game annoying to traverse, plus the game hides items that are extremely hard to see as shiny spots within the white areas. Secondly, there's really nothing else to do in the game until you get right before the end boss, at that point the first sidequests in the game appear, and by that time you're probably already wanting to get it over with, like I was. Finally, the game is a real old-time RPG with its mechanics, as in there's no HP heal after battles or saving anywhere. And the enemies in the final dungeon really enjoy casting Freeze, which counts as a KO'd party member. I did lose several hours of progress due to this.

Still, it was still mostly an enjoyable experience. I did enjoy linking attacks between my party members and creating fluxations to power up each character. It is definitely not worth the $40 price tag the game asks for, but it goes on sale pretty often.

Spirit Hunter: NG (Vita)

The second game in the series after Death Mark, this game has a similar premise where the main character is cursed by a spirit and has to defeat other spirits to eventually remove the curse on him. There's plenty of references to the first game as well. My main complaint is that the areas for exploration are extremely small compared to the first game - you could fit the first three levels of this game in the first game's initial level, which is disappointing. In a horror adventure game where investigation and exploration is the main gameplay it comes off as a weaker title overall than its predecessor. Hopefully the next game, Death Mark II, fixes a few of these problems.

This game takes the 30 hour plot from the second game in the series, condenses it into five hours, and replaces the strategy RPG battles with a more generic musou-like system. It really wasn't anything special, but I'll still get all the trophies as nothing seems particularly challenging. Atuy is still the best character.
