https://www.thedailybeast.com/jay-z-takes-on-capitalism-and-eat-the-rich-critics-in-twitter-space-interview

... In a snippet being circulated on social media, Jay-Z addresses those who have criticized his business ventures and pro-capitalist approach to activism throughout his career.

We not gone stop, the musician said. Hip-hop is young. We still growing. We not falling for that trick-nology the public puts out there now. Before it was the American Dream. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You can make it in Americaall these lies that America told us our whole life. And then when we start getting it, they try to lock us out of it. They start inventing words like capitalist and things like that. Weve been called [n-words] and monkeys and shit. I dont care what words yall come up with. Yall gotta come with stronger words.

He added: We went our alternative route, we made this music, we did our thing. You know, we hustled, we fucking killed ourselves to get to this space and now its like, eat the rich. Man, were not stopping.

The internet seemed both perplexed and humored by Jay-Zs comments, particularly his belief that capitalist is some illegitimate or derogatory term invented to bring down the Black community. Additionally, folks pointed out the disparity between Jays conservative economic views and his admiration for radical, anti-capitalist Black leaders such as Malcolm X and Fred Hampton in his lyrics.

Despite most famous musicians partaking in capitalist ventures and flaunting their riches, Jay-Z has become an especially controversial figure over the past few years for his emphasis on money-making as a path to Black liberation. This ideology has long been embedded in his music but has come under more scrutiny as his fanbase evolves politically. For instance, the rapper was sharply criticized when he announced a partnership with the NFL amid the leagues countless racism scandals and even criticized Colin Kaepernickwhom he once supported in a songfor his method of protesting the league. He also infamously encouraged Black people to engage in gentrification in a song he performed in a tribute for slain rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Most recently, Jay-Z came under fire for a financial literacy program he launched with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey called The Bitcoin Academy for residents of Brooklyns Marcy Houses, the public housing complex where he grew up. Amid growing backlash against the use of cryptocurrencyparticularly, celebrities promoting the financially risky digital currency to their followersthe program was met with sharp criticism on social media. Residents of Marcy Houses also criticized the rapper for being out of touch with his former community in an article for The Guardian.

TopicGoogle Employee who protested contract with Israeli military quits company
Antifar

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/30/technology/google-employee-israel.html
A Google employee who became the most visible opponent of a company contract with the Israeli military said on Tuesday that she would resign after claiming Google had tried to retaliate against her for her activism.

The employee, Ariel Koren, a marketing manager for Googles educational products arm who has worked for the company for seven years, wrote a memo to colleagues announcing her plan to leave Google at the end of the week.

She spent more than a year organizing against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion agreement for Google and Amazon to supply Israel and its military with artificial intelligence tools and other computing services. Ms. Koren, 28, helped circulate petitions and lobby executives, and she talked to news organizations, all in an effort to get Google to reconsider the deal.

Then, in November, she said, came a surprising ultimatum from Google: Agree to move to So Paulo, Brazil, within 17 business days or lose your job.

Ms. Koren marketed educational products to Latin America and was based in Mexico City before moving to San Francisco during the pandemic. But, she said, there was not a clear business justification for the mandated move or its urgency, and a supervisor in Brazil told her that employees in So Paulo were working from home because of the pandemic.

Google and the National Labor Relations Board investigated her complaint and found no wrongdoing.

Fifteen other Google employees posted audio testimonies to YouTube on Tuesday asking the company not to work with Israel and criticizing Googles treatment of Palestinians and its censorship of employees who support them. All but two of the workers spoke anonymously. They released their remarks to coincide with Ms. Korens departure from the company.

Google systematically silences Palestinian, Jewish, Arab and Muslim voices concerned about Googles complicity in violations of Palestinian human rights to the point of formally retaliating against workers and creating an environment of fear, Ms. Koren wrote in the letter explaining her decision to resign.

Shannon Newberry, a Google spokeswoman, said in a statement that we prohibit retaliation in the workplace and publicly share our very clear policy.

We thoroughly investigated this employees claim, as we do when any concerns are raised, she added.

Ms. Koren is the latest in a string of Google employees who have accused the company of retaliation for their activism. Two, Claire Stapleton and Meredith Whittaker, resigned in 2019 and said they had faced retribution after organizing a worker walkout in 2018 to protest the companys sexual misconduct policies.

In November 2019, Google fired four employees who had been involved in a variety of organizing efforts at the company. A fifth worker was fired soon after for creating a pop-up message on Googles corporate network notifying workers of their protected right to organize. The National Labor Relations Board said Google had illegally fired two of the workers, and illegally surveilled and retaliated against others.

The company also pushed out two artificial intelligence researchers, Timnit Gebru and Margaret Mitchell. Both had been part of the companys Ethical A.I. team and had criticized Googles technology in a research paper. Ms. Gebru had separately said the companys diversity efforts were insufficient.

When asked about the firings, Google reiterated previous statements that it had not retaliated against the workers, and it said that, in some instances, the dismissed employees had violated data security policies.

Google made news recently for a different type of firing letting go of an engineer, Blake Lemoine, in July after he claimed the companys A.I. was sentient and leaked corporate documents.

Googles growing reputation for punishing employees who are publicly critical of the company is a notable change for an employer that once nourished an outspoken workplace culture. Google had long welcomed wide-ranging dialogue on its internal, online message boards and encouraged employees to debate executives decisions in companywide meetings and other forums.

Google has drawn enough of a line in the sand of either youre with us and youre on board or youre out, Ms. Stapleton said in a recent interview.

https://time.com/6209104/pakistan-flooding-deaths-near-1000/

Flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains across much of Pakistan have killed nearly 1,000 people and injured and displaced thousands more since mid-June, officials said Saturday.

The new death toll came a day after Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif asked for international help in battling deadly flood damage in the impoverished Islamic nation.

The monsoon season, which began earlier than normal this year, has lashed Pakistan with particularly heavy rains and rescuers have struggled to evacuate thousands of marooned people from flood-hit areas. The crisis forced the government to declare a state of emergency.

In northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, flooding destroyed the gates of a major water control system at the Swat River, leading to flooding in the districts of Charsadda and Nowshera, said Sania Safi, a top administrator in Charsadda.

We preempted the situation and warned and forced hesitating residents to leave their homes for safety and move to relief camps established at government buildings in safe places, she said.

Safi said there was concern of further rising of the Swat and Kabul rivers, adding to the misery of residents who have already suffered the loss of lives and property.
...
Thousands whose homes were swept away now live in tents, miles away from their inundated villages and towns, after being rescued by soldiers, local disaster workers and volunteers, authorities said.

In Baluchistan, Asadullah Nasir, a spokesperson at the provincial disaster management authority, said all 34 districts of the impoverished province were badly affected by heavy rain and flooding. He said road networks were destroyed and bridges washed away and relief was only possible by deploying helicopters, which are not often able to operate because of bad weather. He said provincial officials have confirmed 235 deaths but the number was expected to increase significantly after communications are restored.

In eastern Punjab province, the Rajan Pur district appeared to be the hardest hit along with the district of Dera Ghazi Khan. Thousands of mud and brick houses were inundated by water, most of them completely demolished or at least partly destroyed.

Residents made homeless by the flood took shelter on higher ground, where they waited for relief goods and other help.

Rahim Hasan, 52, said he lost his home and two children a daughter and a son ages 14 and 16, respectively.

I have nothing left in life, my home was destroyed and my children swept away by gushing water and now we are lying helpless on this road under open sky where soldiers are feeding us, he said.

The National Disaster Management Authority in its latest overnight report said 45 people were killed in flood-related incidents from Friday to Saturday. That brought the death toll since mid-June to 982 with 1,456 injured.

Monsoon rains were expected to continue this week, mainly in the south and southwest. The season usually runs from July to mid September in Pakistan.

Heavy rains and subsequent flash floods have damaged bridges and road networks across Pakistan, disrupting the supply of fruit and vegetables to markets and causing a hike in prices.
...
Much of neighboring Afghanistan was also hit by heavy rain and flooding. Mohammad Nasim Haqqani, spokesman for the countrys National Disaster Management Ministry, said at least seven people were killed in eastern Nangarhar province over a 24-hour period, and more than 600 others were rescued by Defense Ministry helicopters. The seven in addition to 182 fatalities announced dead earlier in the week.
