I'm pointing out your hypocrisy and once again you didn't answer my question.

Why are you so insistent that people shouldn't care about this movie because "it's for little girls"
There is no hypocrisy here. Both Disney and Nintendo are two different companies with different marketing strategies to their products. The topic doesn't even have anything at all to do with Nintendo so I don't know why you're focusing on it so much.

Disney makes a variety of products and those products all have different target demographics in mind. They make movies for little girls, movies for little boys, and movies for adults. Sure they may aim for cross appeal but that doesn't mean that there isn't a main demographic in mind when they make a specific movie. The Little Mermaid is a franchise where the target demographic is little girls. Middle aged men can whine and cry until they're blue in the face but that's completely irrelevant to Disney because they never set out to make The Little Mermaid to appeal to you. They made it to appeal to your daughter and your little sister, and all of their creative changes will be made to reflect the opinions of their target demographic.

The men in their 30s may have strong opinions about this movie, but this movie was never meant to be enjoyed with them in mind. So any changes to the lyrics aren't going to reflect the whims and sensibilities to men in their 30s and what they feel about non-verbal consent, it's going to be made to appeal to the opinions of little girls and what they feel about non-verbal consent and touching. As you can already tell from the discussion occurring in this topic, men in their 30s feel a whole lot different regarding non-verbal consent and initiating contact than little girls do. But since Disney never made this movie with 30 year old men as their target demographic in mind they're going to change it with the opinions of little girls instead. Opinions and attitudes change over time and it's been 34 years since the movie made its original debut, and people think a lot differently about consent now than they did when this movie first came out.

Also, people are getting very angry about this change and they don't even know what the change even is. Maybe it'll be a change of perspective, and instead of the lyrics focusing solely on Sbastien trying to convince Eric to kiss Ariel without affirming her consent while the song completely ignores what she actually wants then maybe the song will include some lines that include Ariel's actual thoughts and opinions on the matter as well.

You don't even know what's changed. You're reacting to a headline and absolutely nothing else. Why not wait to see what they do with the song before you automatically declare how terrible it is?

I didn't say a word about the quality of the song. I took exception to the notion that the first song was somehow dubious in its consent.

What were the original lyrics and what are the new ones?

There you see her
Sitting there across the way
She don't got a lot to say
But there's something about her
And you don't know why
But you're dying to try
You wanna kiss the girl
Yes, you want her
Look at her, you know you do
Possible she wants you too
There is one way to ask her
It don't take a word
Not a single word
Go on and kiss the girl
Sing with me now
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
My oh my
Look like the boy too shy
Ain't gonna kiss the girl
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Ain't that sad?
Ain't it a shame?
Too bad, he gonna miss the girl
Now's your moment (ya, ya, ya)
Floating in a blue lagoon (ya, ya, ya)
Boy, you better do it soon
No time will be better (ya, ya, ya, ya, ya, ya)
She don't say a word
And she won't say a word
Until you kiss the girl
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Don't be scared (sha-la, sha-la-la ya, ya, ya)
You got the mood prepared (woah, woah)
Go on and kiss the girl
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Don't stop now (sha-la, sha-la-la ya, ya, ya)
Don't try to hide it how
You want to kiss the girl (woah, woah)
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Float along (sha-la, sha-la-la)
And listen to the song
The song say kiss the girl (woah, woah)
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
The music play (ya, ya, ya, ya, ya, ya)
Do what the music say
You got to kiss the girl
You've got to kiss the girl
Oh, don't you wanna kiss the girl
You've gotta kiss the girl
Go on and kiss the girl

We don't know what the new lyrics are. Whatever they are they could be a little bit better when read in a vacuum.

Yeah but it's so different now. It's not conservative prudes driving the censorship train anymore, but the liberal progressives that fought against them at the time. It's literally living long enough to see yourself become the villain. >_>

Trust me, I'm not one of those people, but it's still noticeable. >_> The biggest example would be the new puritanism of "sexy = bad". But whereas the prudes of old wanted to censor that because "it was against God" the new ones are against because "male gaze is bad". I guess I still remember the days where there was a nice middle ground. "Sexy is good! But not a person's entire worth" nah mean?

But sexy character designs isn't consent? Even when women draw them? Like I get unrealistic beauty standards are harmful, but I don't think completely getting rid of attractive women in media is an answer either. There's room for both Aloys and Tifas lol

They are changing Ursala's lyrics to not be as mean. It fits the trend where Disney is not letting their bad guys be bad guys now.

Media literacy seems to be getting worse and worse. I'm not sure if it's a chicken or egg problem but Disney is probably correct that a stupid review would complain "Ursala is problematic" if they didn't change it.

I thought this post was missing the /s tag until I saw the posts after it. Thinking that progressives are trying to now censor women being sexy is kind of missing the entire point. No one is trying to say women being sexy is bad, but that the societal pressure at play that forces women into the mindset of having to present a certain way is bad.

There's really no comparing modern progressives challenging societal expectations of beauty to old stuffy conservative moms having a come apart because they think rock music is going to summon the literal devil lol

Depends on the media. Movies and television, yeah. Games, not so much. Western ones anyway. There's a trend of de-beautifying women in games in the name of "realism" but then they act like realistic beauty doesn't exist. Like they actively "uglify" the models they used like in Horizon and Last of Us. The Resident Evil remakes are a good example of keeping realistic beauty of the models.

Gwynevere posted...

I get that. I do. I think it's good that every female character design isn't a caked up doll anymore. I just think they might have leaned too far into the other direction. >_>

I suppose the conservative prudes were worse. They didn't just stop at sexy after all. Rock music, metal, D&D, Harry Potter, anime, their list of targets were way longer.

Fuck the lyrics, they're inventing new characters too.

Queen Selina? Triton's distrust/hatred/resentment of humans is in large part due to the way his wife died. What are they thinking?

Oh, yeah, I know what they're thinking. They're 'including' another powerful female character when the whole story is about how powerful a woman is (Ariel, Ursula) and the kind of odds they can overcome (particularly in the original fable, holy shit).
