I've only played GAA1, not 2, and I'll hope off the topic once you get there, but if we're only taking into account the first game, he is very unimpressive and boring. He also has the worst 'surprised' animation of every prosecutor, where he just clutches his heart. And that includes von Karma just kind of raising his head slightly.

The two of them, and the DID serial killer, all feel like fair picks for the bottom of the list.

I was just joking about Himiko. She's in the bottom four for sure, and so is Hiyoko. I'd put Toko higher, but only if you account for UDG and her swearing off being a murderer. Still not high, though.

When I first saw Kazuma, I was like "oh my god, how dead can you be?" I've never been surer a character would die early than him, but I expected it to be some kind of conspiracy instead of a random event. No trial threw me for a loop; I kept expecting the ship to dock somewhere for an emergency trial with a new judge, but it never happened.

It's actually kind of interesting how Naruhodo doesn't get a unique minigame about his skills, like the Magatama, Bracelet, Psychology, or Logic. The first case kind of implied that him having a super memory would be important, but it never comes up again.

Personality-wise, Sonia is pretty much the best. Lets even set aside the fact that she loves reading about serial killers, which is an interest I also share (I actually like reading about bizarre crimes, but serial killers fall into that broad category), and bad horror movies, which I love (little aside, Ive seen every Friday the 13th except the one where Jason is a slug, which I had to turn off because it was just unbearable). Lets also set aside how, as I said earlier, she has all the cool attributes of princesses, but doesnt imply the annoying divide between them and normal people that the rest of them do. Just looking at Sonia as a normal person irrespective of her princessness, shes just a cool person with easily relatable interests. She likes occult stuff, but she likes the kind of weird dark gothic murder-y occult stuff, and not astrology and tarot cards (my sister is into those things, so I know just enough about them to be annoyed). And as a princess, shes really good at just issuing commands and having them obeyed, which is great. Really, if I was going to criticize her in any significant way, it would be that she went on a fun roller coaster ride where she screamed in joy less than a day after three of her friends died.

Its also important that Sonia is written to have the perfect kind of I dont quite speak the language perfectly, so all of my dialogue is written slightly cutely kind of demeanor. Cute girls innocently saying horrible things because they dont quite have command of the language is always great. The important thing about Sonia is that shes a rare perfect fusion between adorable waifus and regal waifus, and unlike other princesses who try to do that, Sonia is very consistently both of those things, as opposed to a normally regal princess who occasionally slips up. Although, part of that is just because she imperfectly speaks Japanese and keeps saying silly things.

And as for Girlfriendness, again, I already covered this a bit, but Ill say it again: all the advantages of princesses, none of the disadvantages. A lot of this comes down to the fact that shes not the princess of a giant empire or anything, shes merely from a small country. How small? The game never says, but she mentions that its left off of maps a lot, so Im imagining like a Lichtenstein or something. I basically always just assumed that Novoselic wasnt particularly important on the grand stage, and is just sort of riding around, being a weird little place. And thats perfect, because it minimizes the inherent difference in class between the two of you. Also, really, can you imagine talking to your friends, and they ask what your girlfriend does for a living, and you say that shes a literal princess? The conversation is just over at that point. Youve won any girlfriend discussions forever, unless you have a friend whos dating an astronaut, and even then, you still have the advantage. And thats before you get into how Sonia is amazed and thrilled by extremely normal things like building sandcastles, or specifically wants to see what its like to have someone rest their head in her lap. Point is, despite being a princess, its not going to be some horribly complicated thing to get on her good side.

I actually deducted a few points from Sonia because she mentions that as a princess, shes occasionally kidnapped by terrorists, and hey, thats just a thing you have to deal with. Honestly, I want to know, how many times in history has a princess been kidnapped? It has to be pretty low, right? Because it comes up nonstop in fiction.

Anyway, one of her FTEs involves telling you that her husband legally needs to speak thirty foreign languages and understand economics, international law, and diagnostic medicine, and capture a legendary animal thats impossible to find, so that sounds like a lot of work. I hope she wont mind me padding the ol resume by saying that my knowledge of Spanish also lets me communicate in Portuguese and Italian. And even then, she says that even a legendary hero can only establish something resembling order and prosperity, so even in the worst case scenario, it sounds like her people will be satisfied if Im just sort of vaguely competent at what I do, rather than being actually worthy of being a king. Do you become a king if you marry a queen? I know in Britain, the husband of a queen is still just a prince. Is that a Britain thing or a Monarchy thing? Im too lazy to check. And if you marry a princess, do you have to live in her country? I ask because no matter what, it sounds like Novoselic is much smaller than Los Angeles. Its fine, though. Assuming its part of the EU, itll be super easy to go to other European countries as a tourist, right? Everything is so compact over there. The only country you can just go on a daytrip to here is Mexico, and to be perfectly blunt with you, Tijuana is worth visiting a maximum of one time. Its probably not even worth that.

All of that, and I didnt even mention that I assume princesses are super rich. I mean, she never states how wealthy her country is, but I have to believe that money is never an issue, right?

Okay, so basically, to sum it all up: Sonias one of the best waifus ever. Part of that might just be the result of being a side character, which means that she can basically have whatever wacky attributes the writer wants to give her, as opposed to actually important characters who need to have important elements that contribute to the story, and she just happened to get all of the great ones that make her a ridiculously solid waifu. I guess what it comes down to is that if you can nullify all of the negative elements of being a princess and master being cute and innocent while saying obscene things, then you really just cannot be reasonably beaten in a waifu ranking.

And so, it comes to this: a secondary character of no particular importance, who does not affect the games story in any meaningful way. Briefly scanning the waifu list, the last girl whos less important than Sonia is Tae Takemi, who clawed her way up based on the strength of being a doctor. And yet, despite or perhaps because Sonia is really, truly not important to her game (and dont say shes the heart of the group or whatever), shes still the best waifu in the series and on this list. Its not even by a small amount, too. Shes almost three full points above the #2 girl.

Before I go on, I just want to say something that I love about Danganronpa and anime in general. I love the concept of a school for the most talented people on Earth, and then 47/48 of them are Japanese, and no one ever discusses it, because of course all the best people in the world are from Japan. Sonias the only exception, and I have to believe that its because they needed her to be a princess and didnt want to use a Japanese one. And dont bring up the black guy in the anime who dies in the first episode. Even I was shocked at how fast that guy bites it.

I was also going to make a joke about ranking video game Sonias, but to be honest, the only other one I can think of is Sonya Blade, whom I know nothing about besides her series. Ive played like eight minutes of Mortal Kombat in my entire life.

Normally, princesses fall into two categories. The first is princesses who are very regal and dont seem like normal people. The second is princesses who are rebellious and seem like normal people, but not that much like princesses. And note that a princess can be rebellious but still princess-y, like Garnet from FFIX. Part of Sonias extremely powerful waifu game is that she somehow merges both types without being rebellious at all: shes a princess and that informs everything about her, but there isnt that divide between her and a normal person (i.e. boring people like you and me). She has all the strengths of royal waifus, and all the strengths of normal people, and none of the weaknesses of either. Id say that makes her the perfect multiclass, but really, all of this is appropriate for someone explicitly titled as the Ultimate Princess.

I guess this goes without saying, but Sonia is, of course, physically exactly my type: tallish, blonde, a huge weeaboo, and hates plums. Shes nowhere near the hottest Danganronpa girl, and she doesnt even make it into the top 10 girls by attractiveness on this list, but she still really brings it. Ill say this, though: Sonia wears three outfits in the course of the series besides her swimsuit, and her normal clothes are by far the best. Im not even sure why, because they arent, like, particularly attractive. If anything, Id say that Sonias default outfit is kind of unattractive? Might be the color. And Im not sure whether this appropriately goes in Attractiveness or Personality, but Sonia has an extremely powerful expression game. Every face she makes is pure gold, every way she holds her hands is perfect. Sonia has perfectly mastered the cute, comedic, and vulnerable-but-not-helpless style of presenting herself.

Also, I like her hairbow with the shiny flecks in it. Sue me.

Also also, this didnt affect her rating, but in the time since I started this list, Danganronpa announced a new spinoff title where everyone just goes to the beach, and showed the sprites for all of the characters in swimsuits, and boy oh boy, Sonia has crazy wide hips. Am I insane for thinking that her hips are unusually wide in this image?

Mid-tier as far as the series goes, I'd say. I did enjoy the setting. A million unanswered questions about everything, which I have to assume will be dealt with in the sequel. The ending made me realize how much weaker Naruhodo's objection is than Phoenix's. van Ziecks is mid-tier as well, but for all I know, he shows up in the sequel and does more good stuff, so I won't do a ranking or anything until I finish GAA2.

I've never played RE games, so you'll have to tell me if it's this single line or if there's more to it. If it's a one-off line, it sounds like the guy is both a cross-dresser and a freak, so I don't see the problem or how this constitutes homophobia. If you're stapling the two words together, as though to say the implication is that all crossdressers are freaks, ehh, maybe, but I don't hear this and think homophobia in the slightest. There's something more than this, right? You wouldn't have brought it up if it was just this one-off line, would you?

No, I'm just joking around for fun. Claire does insult Alfred more than that, but that's the only line where she complains about his crossdressing. Although, she's clearly really creeped out by it in other scenes.

Man you nailed pretty much everything though, great stuff! Especially how caring she is, that's always been my favorite aspect of her personality. And she's easily the most consistent main character of the series, even if Rev 2 was a little rocky in that department, it definitely wasn't enough to derail her entire personality. Plus she's older in that game so it's reasonable to assume she changed a bit.

Yeah, of the core five characters, I think Claire is the best. It could have been Leon, but he's just all over the ****ing place in terms of consistency.

When I started this list, I figured Claire would end up in the mid-high range. Somewhere in the 20-30 area. But the more I really thought about her, the more I realized what a high tier waifu she really is. The more I thought about Claire, the more pro-Claire I became. Slowly, I came to realize that I was all-aboard the Claire Express, even though I'd never really thought about her as a waifu ever before. Claire has almost everything I want in a waifu, except her terrible homophobia, but I guess we can work through that. I want to just address that really quickly before we go on. Claire encounters a Psycho-esque crazy guy who dresses up as his own sister, murders people, and runs an evil corporation that makes monsters, and the best insult shes got is to scream You crossdressing freak at him. So, Claire is losing a few points just based on that, Im sorry.

I should say before we go on that Ada and RE1 Jill are hotter, but Adas the most untrustworthy person in the world, and Jill is an adventurer, so Claire is still by far the best RE waifu. Jill also eventually dyes her hair blonde, in what might be the only case in the universe of a waifu being better as a brunette. Also of note: for purposes of this ranking, I used sort of a gestalt of Claires appearances, since her series ages in real time, so weve seen her from 19 to 40-something. Honestly, though, even at 40, shes still hotter than most waifus.

So, its notable that Claire got #1 in personality. The entire list, and I gave her #1. And not even by a small amount, too. Whys that? Well

I appreciate how Resident Evil gives its five main characters distinct personalities. Leons like a sarcastic prettyboy, Chris is a big dumb guy, Jill is really determined and professional but still a little empathetic, Adas just a straight femme fatale, and Claire Claire is super caring, empathetic, hardworking, and just. Like, I dont quite know how to express this, but theres this certain archetype of female character where no singular personality trait is strongly expressed compared to the others, but just the way theyre written feels very strong woman-ish? I can give examples more easily than definitions. Ashe from FFXII is another example of one. And Claire is the best example of it I can think of. Although, Ill admit that Resident Evil 2 would be far more hilarious if Leon had to take care of a little girl and Claire had to deal with an evil Bond Girl.

I guess thats another thing about Claire, shes really nurturing? Like, she instantly forms a connection with Sherry in Resident Evil 2, and is ready to risk everything for her. I respect that, thats cool. Anyway, point is, Claires good with kids. Always a good trait in a waifu.

What makes Claire good as both as waifu and a character is that shes actually pretty relatable. In a series where everyone is like a soldier or a cop or a spy or a mercenary or something, and in a list with an endless supply of princesses and adventurers, Claire is just a normal person. Even when she decides to fight monsters, her strategy is just to join an anti-bioterrorism organization and campaign against stuff. So, she wins a lot of points for being someone whom you, as a normal person, can conceivably keep up with. I also get the feeling that if a zombie apocalypse happens, Claire as my girlfriend has a realistic chance of getting me out of there? Whereas with Jill, Im definitely dying in the first act, despite Jill being better at fighting. And I say this knowing that of Claires three games, her boyfriends die in two of them Ill admit, though, Claire does sort of return the feelings of a seventeen-year-old when shes in her twenties. Thats not a good look on her.

If Claire has a weakness, its her job. Anti-bioterrorism activist is not on the same level as doctors and princesses, Im sad to say. Im not even 100% clear whos signing her paychecks. But its a fine, respectable job that only got Claire kidnapped by evil organizations twice. Ill concede that 83 might be high for something like that, but Im also factoring in things like Claire having the balls to enter a zombie city to rescue her brother, who is way stronger than she is, without hesitation. That earns her some girlfriend points, since Im assuming shed extend the same Im gonna rescue someone hand to her boyfriend as well. Yeah, a lot of waifus on the list would also do that, and I took that into consideration for most of them, but Claire in particular has the advantage of having actually done it and having a real world context for it. Its much easier to judge how waifus from the real world would behave in a situation than waifus from fantasy worlds would. The more 'real world' you are, the easier it is to judge you.

To be clear: Claire is the correct type of strong waifu, both in terms of being able to take care of herself in a crisis situation and having a strong will. She feels way more like a real person than 90% of the list. Shes not some kind of ridiculous anime character, and I say that having put a ridiculous anime character above her.

One problem with Claire as a girlfriend is the memes. In my mind, Chris Redfield is the meme version of himself, where hes constantly trying to get Leon or Ethan to **** his sister. I said this in my Resident Evil topic a while ago, but Ill say it again: Chris isnt a very compelling character, but hes easily the most memeable person in the series. Wesker is nothing compared to him. Can I just say, by the way, that Resident Evil has a serious problem with its protagonists being superheroes? Claire is the most normal of the main characters, and when she gets kidnapped and taken to an evil monster island in Revelations 2, her response is basically just to be annoyed at the inconvenience. The only time in that entire game that she shows fear is when mercenaries point normal guns at her. Thats scarier to her than literal monsters.

Anyway, Claire. Smart, capable, goodhearted, pretty, good with kids, likes ponytails, able to run around in Antarctica in skinny jeans a biker jacket, likes motorcycles, homophobic, owns a grenade launcher. Most of those things appeal to me.

Case 3 beated, spoilers incoming

I'm glad to see the tradition of confetti being dropped on not guilty verdicts originated in Britain, and America just ported it over later.

It's interesting. Gameplay-wise, this of course is just another AA game. But narratively, it's been completely different from the other games in the series, so I'm still enjoying it a lot.

I remember Leonhart claiming Susato was a high tier teenage girl assistant, though. So far, she's been nothing special at all. Her only big moments have been tossing you around in the ship and fangirling over Herlock Sholmes. She'd better pick it up in the last two cases.

Did not expect a pink-haired little girl inventor at the end. I think there's been one little boy in this series, and how many little girls? Definitely over five.

So, I'm halfway through the third case (I assume), and briefly, I forgot how much more consistent this series is than Danganronpa and Zero Escape. AA always delivers a really consistent tone and has solid writing that doesn't waver too much in quality, even if it has some weak cases. Very clear why this is the gold standard of mystery game series.

Unrelated: I really enjoy how all of the Japanese characters have black hair while the Europeans have colorful hair, because the game needs to emphasize the difference, but previous games had Japanese characters with all kinds of wacky anime hair.
