Not just because of the story (it is perfectly selfcontained), but especially the atmosphere is unrivaled. No other movie has been able to capture that feel of dread that the first one gave, Kyle Reese was pants-shittingly terrified and the entire movie the T-800 felt like an unstoppable machine. The first movie is kind of a horror/slasher movie but it doesn't actually feel like one. Kyle obviously has PTSD and it shows.
