I'm one of the few that actually played Demon's Souls before Dark Souls was a thing, and I found Dark Souls to be way, way easier. But I've always wondered if that was primarily because I was used to the "Souls" style. Demon's Souls was much more unforgiving - you had to navigate an entire area without dying - none of those bonfires that make Dark Souls more manageable.

That said, Demon's Souls was more exploitable. One of the bosses could literally be sniped to death without even having to fight it.

This. there's nothing inherently difficult about Dark Souls that a good amount of practice and memorization won't get you. The first truly difficult boss fight is O+S. Even Capra Demon isn't that bad.

Actually, this is precisely what I loved so much about Bloodborne.

You do legitimately have to "go in guns blazing" but with the same cleverness and preparation the Souls games require. The ability to regen the health you've lost added a lot to the combat.

There is nothing more satisfying than the first time you beat Father Gascoigne. God I hope Bloodborne comes to PC. It's too good of a game to languish at 720p 30fps.

Father Gascoigne is an extremely well-designed fight because it's the first fight in the game that really hits home that you can't play Bloodborne like other Souls games. The previous enemies and even the Cleric Beast can be defeated with defensive play, but Gascoigne is all about riposting and keeping momentum.

It's a testament to the game's design that he seems so "hard" initially but then if you go back and fight him after learning the game's mechanics, he's almost comically easy.

I'll think you'll find that most fans of the souls series will agree that the first game you play is the hardest one. Precisely because, like you suggest, you have gotten use to the combat system.

I really wish they would've expanded upon that PVP boss from the Tower of Latria in Demon's Souls. That was an exceptionally clever boss fight - pulling another player from their game and making them literally the final boss of that area.

Not to change the subject, but I really appreciated the influences Dark Souls III took from Bloodborne. I think the fusion of the two game designs made Dark Souls III feel really fresh without destroying what makes the Souls series different from Bloodborne.

one thing I wish was a thing for all the Souls games was this

just make a boss rush mode. or a "pick a boss" mode. this would be done from the main menu maybe. and you can fight any boss anytime you want just to practice or for fun. as much as I suck at Dark Souls I love attempting the bosses but hate everything else in the game. I wish the game was just the boss fights. also I could probably get better at the bosses if I could just fight them over and over instantly for practice instead of having to keep making my way to them each time I die

I think the boss that I am the most conflicted over is the "final" final boss in Demon's Souls. Without spoilers, at first I was super disappointed but after reading the lore, I think it's one of the best bosses ever. The point it's trying to convey is so well executed.

Don't listen to the people telling you it's the hardest game ever. Definitely don't listen to the meme drones saying "git gud", if you ask for advice and get that response instead it really gets you wondering if you're at the part where the wheels have come off and the game's abandoned trying to be fair and it's all one big prank on you.

The game is for the most part (There's this one boss) fair and manageable. If you can find a way to win that's good enough. Just get a feel for how your character moves, how fast attacks come out and how much stamina they use. A lot of the time the game's a lot more about positioning and adaptability more than execution.
Hope you enjoy the game, definitely one of the best games that's come out in a long time now.

I'm enjoying it so far, though obviously I'm only at the beginning. Movement feels a little clunky. Most of my gaming has been on Monster Hunter: World, where movement feels much smoother and more intuitive for me. I'm expecting I'll probably have a challenge here. I'm not a particularly good player and I've already died a few times. Tried killing Asylum Demon a couple times with the broken sword before it dawned on me that they probably didn't expect newbies to spend like 10+ minutes killing him with paper cuts.

Gravelord servants are a covenant players can join, and they can make stronger enemies appear in other people's games. I forgot the specifics of it, but IIRC it's not something you have to worry about since I think they only affect players that are on a New Game+ (or higher) run.

That message about them comes up whenever another player has entered the Gravelord servant's world and killed them.

Btw, with Ornstein and Smough you can use features of the area map to keep them separated.

Yeah I always find the arguments on "it needs difficulty modes" disingenuous because it isn't actually that hard. We're not talking like NES games with pixel perfect jumps and twitch reflexes, it's a game that you use patience and learning to overcome. There is a video of a bedridden elderly Japanese man playing Dark Souls. He can't get out of bed, his hands more slowly and yet he can beat the game because he can be patient and learn how to overcome different enemies/bosses.
