There are tons of LGBTQ youth that suffered abuse. That was never called into question.

I'm saying that this comic shows a woman (she looks to be a full grown adult, but I'm sure she's supposed to be in her teens) coming out to her parents like she has no idea that her father would be against it -- and then he brutally attacks her.

If you've made it to 16, and you've lived with your father, you have a reasonable idea of who he is and how he's going to react. Will he get mad if you bring home a boyfriend or girlfriend of another ethnic group? Will he get mad if you bring home someone of the same sex? Will he hit you with the back end of his hand if he sent you to get groceries and you forgot to pick up limes? By whatever age she's drawn to be, she should have an idea of who he is and what's coming. It's written like she expects no backlash and this is the first time he's reacted violently.

He's so casual about getting the gun out - like he's reaching for an Axe spray or some chicklets.

"I need some gum. My mouth is dry. Oh, and where's my gun? I need to shoot this guy while I'm at it."

I could easily ask the same of you.

I think you're trying to pick a fight where there isn't one to be had. I'm not saying homophobia doesn't exist. I'm saying that was sloppy writing.

She comes out to him in good faith as though she full expects him to accept her for who she is. He immediately responds with violence. The part that is unrealistic is not that a father would be abusive, but that there would have been no warning signs growing up. If you have a parent who is capable of violence, you know to walk around on eggshells. You don't challenge their views if you can avoid doing so and, when forced to, you approach with caution - with self-preservation in mind. The only way this scenario plays out is if he'd been an ideal father all the days that she was growing up and then snapped the moment he found out she was gay.

I've seen better indictments of anti-LBTQ violence in 90s comic. An issue of Shadow Man immediately comes to mind. Men with bats chase a gay man into an alleyway only to be confronted by the eponymous hero of the comic. That is something that did happen. Also, the comic focuses on a hate-spewing radio talk personality which emboldened bigots to violence. Again, that happens. I bet 60% of the anti-Asian violence in American can be pinned on Donald Trump with his accusations of "kung flu" and "China virus."

What doesn't happen is for a seemingly nice father to act with immediate violence upon finding out someone is gay. (Or, conversely, for the child of an abusive parent to expect acceptance.) There are always warning signs for that kind of behavior.

Kicking her out of the house? Demanding her go to church and pray the gay away? Threatening to cut her out of the inheritance? That, I believe. Hitting her with the chip bowl feels like the most extreme kind of hate. It's like coming out to your father only to realize in that exact instant that he's the secret love-child of Adolf Hitler and Myra Hindley.

She wouldn't have come out to him if he had shown previous warning signs of violence or extreme prejudice. It's all about the psychology - not the unlikelihood that monsters to exist.

Even for the 90s, hitting her with the chip bowl seems like an extreme overreaction. Comics aren't exactly known for their subtlety though.

Yeah, no. You can't do that.

I just watched a YouTube review of a shoot 'em up on the Sega CD.

This is the first time I've really been hit with the fact that, someday, my reflexes will slow and I might not be able to beat games like Lifeforce or Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Battletoads remains the one game I never beat (legitimately). I made it half-way through before giving up. Then my cartridge gave up when I tried to return to it a few years ago.

I really need to play that one again and beat it while I still can. It makes me wonder what else I need to do before fast reflex gameplay is a thing of the past.
