I agree. Shit happens, most stories never end on a happy note, that's just life.

Like, I know some people will lose their shit with Attack on Titan's ending in the anime for example, but I honestly loved it in the manga. I think it sometimes depends on how relatable you consider the characters, and almost everyone is an asshole in AoT, hard to really care for any of them in my case.

Happy endings are best when they are earned.

However, happy endings are so expected due to being the norm that writers try to create tension by stacking the odds so high that any resolution has to be either masterful, or not earned in the slightest. A lot of writers can't pull off the first, and so we get a lot of unsatisfying happy endings.

The audience gets built up with this visceral fear or sadness, and a happy ending unleashes a wave of euphoria, giving them something to talk about and look back on those negative feelings before the payoff. Happy endings in perfectly happy stories just blend in. There's no conflict.

The best endings make me feel good. They reward characters who stuck to their convictions or saw the errors in their ways. I like a story that is merciful, hopeful, and satisfying.

My favorite example of a good ending is Naruto. The last few chapters of the original manga were exactly what I wanted them to be.

Leaving the Boruto series out of it, since I haven't read it or watched it, the ending of Naruto is amazing.

I mean, it's not quite that simple, but on average, I agree.

I hate endings where everything just magically works out and contrived bullshit happens to give every character a happy ending. It just sort of takes me out of the entire experience when everything neatly falls into place in a way that doesn't feel earned. A lot of happy endings are just too generic, too, and are just really forgettable.

However, there are bad endings that are, well, bad as well. I've definitely seen stories that just kind of go for shock value bad endings that aren't interesting or engaging at all. Arbitrarily killing off most or all of the characters just to try to be shocking or edgy isn't an interesting story route.

With that said, I feel like a lot of bad endings feel more earned than that and reflect that a lot of the problems in the story can't just be neatly wrapped up by defeating any one given bad guy or something. Life isn't that easy and a lot of problems don't just go away when you cut off the source. There are also just more interesting routes that you can take with bad or bittersweet endings depending on the nature of the story, reflecting ongoing problems that give the reader/viewer/player more to think about after the story ends instead of just "Okay, story over, everyone is happy, and that's it unless there's a sequel. Yay."

Basically, the story has to earn its ending either way, but I do probably enjoy bad endings more than good ones as a whole.

With certain genre of movies nowadays though, it seems that bad/grey endings are the norm though, so there's the same aspect of "it's not earned".

Like I remember a string of horror movies getting released that tried to make it a "twist" that there was a bad ending and it was like...you all have bad endings, I would be more surprised if someone survived.

Adventure Time has a happy ending, though it's not perfectly happy.
Steven Universe ends a little too neatly, but The Movie and Future, whatever their flaws, complicate the picture beautifully. The fact that Steven, specifically, doesn't know what to do with himself now that no one needs his help anymore is a fantastic concept, and the fact that they actually confront how goddamned traumatized he was/would realistically be by everything that happened makes it pretty unique.

Depends on the movie/game/book/etc. Generally I like happy endings, but if done right a bittersweet to even bad can be great.

I'd say Chinatown (spoilers just in case) has one of the best endings of a movie ever and it's a super downer ending.

The Wire has some good endings for some characters, some horrible endings for some characters, and bittersweet ones as well. They all feel correct even if we don't like seeing those characters end up that way. A show like that having one big happy ending would make no sense.

I'm also with the idea of good endings being earned. A lot are just lazy.
