This has kind of been common sense since day one.

It's been pointed out by multiple people that the main reason masks aren't 100% effective at protecting against infection is because you can be infected through other openings (ie, eyes and ears). So it seems relatively logical that giant glass shields in front of your eyes that minimize the ability of particulates to get into your juicy orbs could potentially help lower infection risk even more.

Pretty much. It's nice to have concrete evidence that that presumption is true (though n=276 is a bit on the small size, as was noted above), but this is a pretty intuitive, unsurprising finding.

One can hope. As much as exclusivity deals are generally bad for consumers, first- and second-party exclusives actually tend to be pretty good, since the platform owner is relying on them to convince people to buy their console and therefore tends to put more emphasis on making good games than on squeezing every penny they can get out of each release. A lot of Bethesda's recent bad PR has been a consequence of churning out their usual bug-laden messes, but without the decent games that are usually buried amidst those bugs because they were just trying to make cheap, heavily-monetized cash-ins. Get rid of that pressure to sacrifice quality for monetization, and maybe we'll see a return to the usual bug-laden messes that are still fun once some amateur fixes all of their problems for free three days after launch.

It actually might be. The whole console dynamic has changed a ton over the last few years

It's true. Microsoft has generally been pretty tight with Nintendo this generation, being considerably more willing than Sony to share IP's and establish cross-play. Of course, the Xbone has been pretty undeniably lagging behind the PS4, so that's probably less Microsoft actually looking for collaborative opportunities and more them not being as arrogant as companies tend to be when they're winning the console market (which we've seen with all three), and trying to make Sony's life more difficult. If they end up in a stronger position next gen, that dynamic may very well change.

On one hand, they're unambiguously providing a lesser service, especially when you look at the more prestigious schools who can really only justify their inflated costs with the networking opportunities they aren't currently able to offer. On the other hand, though, their operating costs haven't really changed (they're saving some money because buildings aren't being used, but organizing online learning takes some extra resources, so I expect they roughly break even), so they still need normal amounts of revenue to sustain themselves.

So while online classes probably shouldn't cost the same amount as in-person ones, I can understand that the university kind of needs to charge the same amount, and to that end, I think it's okay. Provided students won't be penalized for skipping this year if they decide the online experience isn't worth the full cost, a solution to the problem is already available.

I always kind of feel that fancy pizza and classic pizza are two different types of food. They're just such different experiences that it's hard to make direct comparisons, even if they're both technically pizza.

I think there's court cases in America that ruled against the people instead of the restaurants.

When the customer has explained their allergies and asked if it's safe for them to eat there? I can see it for cases where the people assumed they'd be safe and ended up eating something they were allergic to because they didn't do their due diligence, but if they say "I'm allergic to X" and the restaurant still serves them X, I can't see how that would be on the customer. Willingly doing something that you know will endanger somebody's life rarely goes in your favour, after all.

WhiskeyDisk posted...
there's no reasonable expectation or obligation on the part of the propietor to expect perfectly normal foodstuffs to kill someone.

Eh, that's debatable. Food allergies are becoming quite common, such that anyone running a restaurant can reasonably expect that some of their customers will have allergies. To that end, it's pretty reasonable to expect them to proactively announce at least common allergens that are in their food, especially when those things aren't readily obvious (e.g. you can expect gluten in a loaf of bread, but you might not expect sesame oil or mustard seed). In Canada, food manufacturers are required to specifically identify certain common allergens (such as nuts, eggs, milk, and soy) in their ingredient list, which is really a pretty reasonable expectation to help customers with allergies make informed choices. Food service establishments aren't required to label their products like that, but when it's feasible (such as when there's extra space on the menu and they're in the process of redesigning it anyway), it seems reasonable to me to expect them to do so.

It's not uncommon for restaurants to turn people with serious food allergies away, but they do have the responsibility to do so if they can't/don't want to accommodate them. When restaurants do accommodate allergies, it's for the good PR/to keep people's business, not because they're forced to. If they are informed that a customer has allergies, and they neither refuse their business nor take reasonable precautions to avoid triggering said allergies, then they very much should be held liable for the ensuing reaction.

Yes, I did refrain from commenting on obvious common sense. Preparing whatever is possible to order to avoid preparing too much is something everyone who has ever tried to limit their food waste learned immediately upon starting to think about it. That's also not worth highlighting as though it's something special.

Of course, being a day or two old doesn't exactly make an appreciable difference when you're dealing with veggies that are getting cooked, especially in an oven (which tends to dry them out a bit anyway). Raw? Sure. But on that time scale, all that's going to happen to the pepper is some drying around the cut edges, which is completely negated if you cook moisture out of or into it. In a blind taste test, I can just about guarantee you couldn't tell the difference between a slice of pizza made with fresh-cut peppers and a slice made with ones that were cut yesterday. Trying to maximize the freshness of ingredients is still best practice (for FIFO purposes, if nothing else), but it doesn't always make a huge difference.

It's usually waived for kids. I don't know of specific regulations to that effect, and in practice I think it is technically illegal and you get the occasional turbo-Karen calling the cops on kids riding their bikes on her sidewalk, but it's generally accepted that if you can't ride appreciably faster than a jogger would be going, the sidewalk's safe enough.

LinkPizza posted...
Well, even pedestrians shouldnt do that...

They shouldn't, but if they do, pedestrians are usually moving slowly enough that there's time to react. Bikes, on the other hand, typically move 3-5 times faster than pedestrians (at least on the sidewalk, since it's harder to go fast there), so if they do that, it's likely to cause some problems.

Signs between the road and the cyclist lane only apply to the road, unless I am completely misremembering for now.

Bearing in mind that the Netherlands generally have some of the most bike-friendly cycling laws in the world and actually have the infrastructure for separate signage to be reasonable. I can't say I've ever seen a stop sign in North America that explicitly didn't apply to the bike lane.

I imagine it varies a bit from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but generally, bikes are required to obey all applicable traffic laws, including coming to a complete stop at stop signs. In practice, I personally end up doing rolling stops pretty frequently because it's kind of a pain to come to a complete stop on a bike, and the fact that I'm going relatively slowly and have no blind spots means I can pretty comfortably be certain that nobody is coming without having to fully stop. That is against the letter of the law, but it at least follows the spirit of it in that I do not ignore stop signs and I do yield right of way appropriately whenever I encounter one (I come to a complete stop if I can't go right away when I get there). You may be seeing cyclists doing that, in which case, it's probably altogether legal, but it is safe and I'd say that's okay.

Now, the ones that ignore stop signs and blow through them, cutting off people that have right of way? They're just terrible and don't belong on the road and give competent ones a bad name. Treat them accordingly.

LinkPizza posted...
Depends on if they are on the road or not. If they're on the sidewalk, I don't think the same rules apply. But on the road, they do...

I've never lived anywhere where bikes are even allowed on the sidewalk, though that very frequently gets ignored. If they are on the sidewalk, the expectation is that they dismount and walk across crosswalks according to the rules that govern pedestrians, so while it's not technically wrong to say they don't have to obey stop signs, they still are not permitted to ignore the intersection entirely and zip out with no regard for oncoming traffic (for obvious reasons).

Saw a recipe that says I need a candy thermometer (which I don't have)

You can use pretty much any thermometer that goes up to 350F as a candy thermometer. It won't be quite as convenient as being able to clip it to the side of the pot and ignore it, and if the probe is on the shorter side you need to be extremely careful not to touch the hot sugar, but it'll do the job.

That said, you really don't need a candy thermometer for caramel. Other sugar boiling, sure, but with caramel, you're going primarily by colour/smell, and the window between starting to caramelize and burning is so short that taking the time to check a thermometer once you think it might be done is going to result in it burning while you're looking away (and nobody wants to clean burnt sugar out of the bottom of a pot). If you've got an appetizing amber colour, you're golden (pun not intended), no thermometer needed. If you get more practice, you'll start to get a feel for how different colours of caramel taste and adjust how you cook it accordingly, but for now, just trust that you know what colour caramel is supposed to be and stop the cooking at that point.

That's exactly what having an abortion on a fetus that is 5+ months old is: The killing of another person.

Which is why most people don't advocate for abortions of fully-viable fetuses (although personhood generally doesn't get applied until delivery). At that point, you can just induce labour and put the kid up for adoption, really. Late-term abortion requests aren't exactly common anyway. Most people know within a few weeks of learning that they're pregnant whether or not they want to keep the baby.

That said, when there's a time limit placed on abortions, it's not uncommon for local governments that want abortion to be illegal to introduce a bunch of red tape people have to wade through to get them such that women spend 3-4 months just doing that. In that way, those governments are making it practically illegal, so while "it shouldn't be legal after this reasonable point" sounds reasonable on paper (and generally is), it's often used as a means of making abortions unavailable without explicitly making them illegal. That's something to watch out for.

You need some aging to get to that point, and calling it "freshly made" at that point is kind of misunderstanding what those two words mean when paired together. That, or you're smelling it just as the hops have been added and are boiling, in which case it's a solid week out from being done and "freshly made" still isn't accurate (though you could identify it as an IPA).

Between carving games up to sell critical stuff as DLC (that's not all DLC, but the practice definitely happens) and long-term monetization strategies in the form of microtransactions and the like, games are not designed to merely cost $60 anymore. Those users that do resist the extra stuff and only spend $60 often end up with an inferior product for doing so, and there aren't enough of them to keep the whales from inflating the average.

It varies a lot by the size of the establishment, how many other options there are on the menu, and what sort of restaurant it is. For a small place that isn't focused on pizza, especially with covid restrictions on seating, 20 on a Wednesday night isn't bad.

Though, I think it probably looks weirder when someone is picking a lock that hacking one. Like, with a smart lock, my neighbors might think I have someone access to my house rather than someone hacking. But if they see someone picking the lock, that might give them more pause...

As I understand, hacking a smart lock mostly consists of waiting nearby until somebody uses it, then intercepting the bluetooth signal sent between the lock and the "key" and replicating it to make a key of your own. Once you've got that, you can walk in without looking like you're doing anything nefarious at all, you just might arouse some suspicion sitting in your car while you wait for the opportunity to clone the key.

Suspicion aside, that does bring up a very important difference in the locks' relative insecurities: If you want to break into a smart lock, you have to commit to doing so. That's not going to be a casual, opportunistic "hey let's see if I can break into this house," it's going to be a targeted decision to break into a specific house, which is much rarer than opportunistic break-ins. That helps to make them more secure, even if the break-in itself isn't going to arouse as much suspicion.

The track currently has it ultimately hitting Nova Scotia in Canada, though probably only at Category 1 or 2.

Yeah, people here are starting to get concerned about it. It's been a while since a hurricane has made landfall here while still at hurricane status. It's expected to hit us on Tuesday.

I know I just kinda wanted to highlight how surprisingly easy it is to pick really heavy duty seeming locks in like 10 seconds with pretty basic tools.

It's why I kind of have to laugh at the paranoia surrounding smart locks and whatnot. People freak out that anyone with access to $50 software can intercept the bluetooth transmission while the lock is being opened and use that information to break in, while ignoring that anyone with access to a $20 set of lockpicks and a bit of practice can already get into a tumbler lock just as easily. That's been true for literally centuries. Yes, the two aren't completely comparable, particularly in that it's generally a bit easier to crack a smart lock without drawing attention to yourself, but the extent to which people act like smart locks aren't secure at all while cowering behind tumbler locks is still pretty silly.

Pretty sure work wants to avoid a lost-time injury on their record and I dont blame them. Im still relatively new there as well. I took a hard road through the mountains to get to a delivery and jarred my thumb pretty bad on wheel. The washboard gravel caused by logging trucks made the road awful to drive. I lost the stick and the wheel, and the truck wasnt stopping because the tires were skipping off the ground. It wasnt fun at all.

Honestly, that doesn't even sound like it would actually warrant a worker's comp claim, except possibly for time lost going to the ER (which your work could just pay you for if they ant to avoid the blemish on their record). Presumably, you didn't have to pay to get it checked out, treatment is just splinting it and being careful for the next couple weeks, and it's unlikely you'll suffer any serious long-term consequences, so I wouldn't expect much by way of monetary costs. It's probably still not a bad idea to get the forms filled out so the whole incident is documented if you do develop long-term issues and need to seek compensation somewhere down the line, but I wouldn't think there's much rush on that.

Even brakes aren't 100% effective. Better stop putting them in cars, I guess.

Even a moderate reduction, well below 100%, would spell the difference between a disease that spreads like wildfire and one that dies out on its own without a vaccine.

Heck, even a 5% reduction would become significant in the long run, due to the exponential nature of viral spread. A 5% reduction per iteration turns into a 40% reduction by the time you reach 10 iterations (0.95^10=0.5987), which for this virus would be approximately 2-3 months. That's huge (at current US death rates, a 40% reduction over 2-3 months would save ~10 times as many lives as were lost in 9/11), and 5% is well below what empirical data (i.e. people actually looking at what's happening and not just watching one video that shows that sneezes leak around the edges) indicates masks are able to do.

Quite simply, the notion that anything less than 100% protection is pointless is insanely idiotic. No protective measure can ever provide 100% protection, short of completely avoiding the thing you're trying to be protected from. Protective measures exist to reduce risks to acceptable levels such that we can conduct the corresponding activities in reasonable safety, not to eliminate those risks entirely. Masks are no different: the only way to truly be 100% protected from Covid is to stay away from all people and never do anything, but wearing masks and maintaining distancing while in public can provide enough safety to allow people to not be hermits indefinitely.

Aerial GS in MHGU was pretty wild. Very much not optimal compared to Valor GS due to how horribly hard it was to aim charged hits, but really satisfying to play whenever the stars aligned properly to let it work well.

WhiskeyDisk posted...
Is the broadsword still slow enough to leave the room to get a beverage while the attack animates?

Presumably. That's kind of the point of GS: you rely on charged attacks that require predictive skills and careful positioning to land reliably. Honestly, as much as attacks in MH feel slow when you first start out and you're trying to chase down small monsters, once you get into the proper fights and get used to it, it's really not a slow game.

Worker's comp often covers time lost seeking medical attention, too, so if you have to take time off work to get to your doctor, I would expect that to be reimbursed. Again, though, I'd suggest contacting them directly to get that information from a more reliable source.
