Are you disappointed that this movie didn't "bomb"?

Despite a huge disappointment in China and no theatres opening for the film in thousands of markets and anti-China sentiments over Mulan that has plagued the film's release, it looks to finally be a WIN for Disney as it appears 30% of Disney+ users and counting have purchased Mulan earning it a whopping 261 MILLION Profit!!.

The high cost of the film at 27 dollars a pop was thought to be a turn off for most moviegoers..except it appeared it wasn't as 30% of US Households purchased the film and these numbers are just estimates as we know that there are 9 million US households with Disney+ now and it didn't even include data from foreign markets.

Disney was pleased with the results after opting out of theatrical release and combined with theatre grosses from foreign countries it has somewhere in the 300M gross in which case it was enough to keep the film from losing money

This could be the new standard for how studios release big tent films that have been largely shut out this summer thanks to COVID-19 as the big release of Tenet is proving to be a big gamble and a big loss for Warner Brothers which has only made 30M in 14 days to date

Are you disappointed that this movie did not bomb?

Uh...those numbers don't remotely add up. I'm also willing to bet there is literally no movie ever thats had even close to 30% viewership. At 27 bucks a pop 270 million profit would be 10 mil purchases. Obviously the movie cost some money to make but even if it was another 270 million dollars (which would be ludicrous) it'd still have only hit 20 million purchases. Theres 328 million people (120 million households) in the US so that wouldn't have even broken 20% by the most absolutely generous standards. Realistically it was probably seen by FAR less than that.

Your first mistake is basing your calculations off of info that duckbear provided.

Not saying you're wrong, only that you might want to get more accurate figures from a more reliable source

And it's a terrible movie, too.
Like, it's not even some must-see once in a generation masterpiece, but utter garbage.
It's not even the "movie theater experience" it's literally paying triple just to not have to wait like 2 months to see it.

Pathetic.

Opening the floodgates for 100 dollar games.

That's been happening for a while. Ostensibly, the price of games hasn't increased, but the average revenue game companies are making per copy sold is well over $100 at this point for most AAA titles. Between carving games up to sell critical stuff as DLC (that's not all DLC, but the practice definitely happens) and long-term monetization strategies in the form of microtransactions and the like, games are not designed to merely cost $60 anymore. Those users that do resist the extra stuff and only spend $60 often end up with an inferior product for doing so, and there aren't enough of them to keep the whales from inflating the average.

Mad? No. A little disappointed? Maybe, though not entirely for how many bothered to pour money into the film. Now then, this says 261 mil in profit, but what was the budget used for making the film?

I'm not disappointed people bought mulan. It's whatever. I'm more disappointed that they bought it while it had a $30 price tag. That's going to tell Disney and other studios that it's okay to charge that much.

Source for the claim? Because I can't seem to find a citation.

Otherwise like I'd said at the outset, given the outrageously high rental fee, it'd be hard for them not to make a good chunk of cash. And while this is a small fraction of the money it would have made in theaters (other recent Disney live-action remakes did over $1b), whatever it makes on its own platform is presumably pure profit.

Also 30% of Americans =/= 30% of Disney+ users. [EDIT: Had some other math, but then I realized Ducky's claims were all jumbled so I'm not sure what's what at this point.]

I don't know anything about it being Chinese propaganda, but I just can't get over that people are dumb enough to pay so much for Disney+ to begin with, then pay so much extra to see one shitty movie. Especially with how incredibly easy it would be to find it for free.

Good question!!

On one hand it proves a movie can be a success without having it released in theaters, which I see as a huge step forward in the entertainment biz

But on the other hand, yeah, I'm disappointed Mulan, with its China controversy, was a hit

The user reviews for it are mostly bad.

It probably only succeeded since people can't really use word of mouth for movies right now.

Overlooking that I'm not sure how big of a success it actually was (considering that the other Disney LA remakes did a lot more), that arrangement is kinda shitty for the industry in general.
