Pretty much. I feel a little bad for such people, as well as for any parents that named their kid Karen 2-3 years ago (presumably, the name's popularity has plummeted in the past year), but the term is not racist or misogynist in any way because it describes behaviour, not race or sex. That the stereotypical Karen is a white woman is a consequence of that being the largest demographic of Karens, not any inherent racist or sexist sentiment.

Then you're reading the graph wrong

Not at all. The graph shows that, adjusting for inflation, games are being sold for less now than they ever have been. As such, according to that graph, increasing MSRP to account for that inflation would be reasonable.

Of course, as others have alluded to, there are a lot more factors at play here than simple inflation. Personal purchasing power generally hasn't kept up with inflation, which is a more salient factor for luxury purchases like video games than inflation is. Development budgets have grown, but so have sales numbers, which negate each other to a certain extent (and I'm pretty sure the increased sales outweigh the costs). Most significantly, post-purchase monetization (DLC, microtransactions, subscription fees, etc.) has become such a huge part of so many AAA games' revenue stream that keeping a $60 MSRP really doesn't hurt any of those companies, and in fact, each copy of the game sold generates far more than $60 on average.

Could a >$60 MSRP be justified? Yeah. But somebody has to make the first move to change that paradigm, and nobody wants that bad PR, especially when the industry's revenue is very much not suffering right now and increasing MSRP would have to be paired with a compensatory decrease in monetization (which is generally worth a whole lot more than an extra $10-20 per game) to placate consumers.

A live action remake of a Disney classic is indeed a attempt to bring the animated characters to life thus should follow everything to a t. When they don't things go downhill fast. Again look at Mulan.

Mulan's issues aren't a matter of trying to change things, they're a matter of making bad changes. There's plenty of room to make an adaptation of Mulan that's truer to the original myth and less fantastical, which is what they seemed to be doing by removing the talking animals, musical numbers, and gratuitous romantic interest from the animated version. Except then they also made it into the live-action equivalent of a magical girl anime and completely undermined any chance they had of seizing that opportunity.

The fact that they made stupid changes here doesn't mean that all changes they ever make will be stupid, nor does it mean that frame-by-frame remakes are all they should be doing. That's basically what they did with Lion King, and it got panned for not doing anything to make watching it over the original worthwhile (and also that realistic lions don't exactly emote very well compared to cartoon ones).

wwinterj25 posted...
However I do find it irksome when companies change well established characters rather than build new ones.

Tinkerbell's race isn't exactly a significant part of the established character. Sure, she's been white in every well-known depiction, but that hasn't factored into her role in the story at all. Make her black, white, or purple, and nothing meaningful changes except which metaphorical crayons you use up drawing the footage. It's virtually guaranteed that Disney is doing this for SJW points and not because this actress is genuinely the best for the role, but presuming the girl they've got is reasonably competent (which is probably fair, though I don't know Grown-ish at all), this isn't going to appreciably affect the final product in any way.

It seems science and Facebook mom's are chasing themselves ouroboros style. They already wanted to wear masks in the begging but everyone told them how stupid they were for scrounging up whatever they can during the peak of the shortage.

Welcome to the front lines of science. When you're dealing with something really novel like this, it's not uncommon for recommendations to do complete 180's as the best available information changes. In the early days, available evidence suggested masks were mostly just effective for preventing transmission from infected people, not protecting healthy people, so people hoarding them for their own protection was baseless and problematic because it meant there were fewer available for use in riskier environments. Since then, there's been more than enough concrete data to conclude that masks are effective enough for personal protection to warrant using, plus the number of cases paired with the potential for asymptomatic transmission means there's a non-trivial likelihood that seemingly healthy people are infectious, so the recommendation has changed.

This is throwing people off because they don't usually get to see science working like this. Most people view science as a source of answers, not as a process of asking questions. The fact that Covid is such a pressing situation that demands immediate action has pulled back that curtain, and people are surprised to see that the whole process consists of throwing a bunch of educated guesses at a wall to see what sticks. It's understandable that many would be more inclined to distrust the science that's currently going on than you reshape their entire understanding of the process.

The way that's written, merely being present at a protest when a few anarchists, far right false-flaggers, or anyone else decide to start breaking windows or setting fires means you can get hit w/ a penalty, even if you didn't f***ing do anything,

Bonus points where the handful of people breaking windows and setting fires at some of these protests have been police. This conceivably gives police the power to arrest everybody present even if the police are the only violent ones.

On paper, it seems reasonable. Pretty much everyone can agree that rioting and other such violent behaviours are bad and deserve some degree of punishment. Consider how broad the wording is and the potential implications for overreach, though, and this should terrify everyone. Vandalism and assault are already illegal; the only reason more people aren't prosecuted for it is because of how difficult it is to single out individual antagonists in a chaotic situation like this. The solution being proposed here is to skip the step of singling out individual antagonists and instead just prosecute anyone they can get their hands on for being "associated with" (read: in the same area as) actual perpetrators. They're not making it illegal to riot, they're making it illegal to be present at a riot, and that's very much not okay.

Yeah, this kinda baffles me. There's no way ordinary dumpster-diving would find them quickly enough to make resale a sustainable business, even without considering the further costs involved in repackaging them. Condoms are very much not a high-value item, unless they're a lot harder to come by in Vietnam than I'm realizing (and therefore more expensive), so you'd need one person to be able to collect an enormous volume in order to turn enough profit to make such a criminal venture worthwhile. I'm really not sure how that's possible.

Who's required to pay for it? If the mother, this seems like a thinly-veiled attempt to discourage abortions (since there will be additional costs if the procedure goes wrong). If the doctor, that's potentially reasonable, given that it was the doctor's failure to perform the procedure correctly that resulted in the need for care, but that's going to discourage doctors from offering abortions because of the potential costs. If the government, then that shouldn't affect abortions' availability, but the notion of a republican US government offering to pay for abortion-related health care seems somewhat less than plausible.

Oh, absolutely. You just often see tiny house living kind of romanticized as a way to get the perks of conventional home ownership (namely the ownership part) for a fraction of the cost, without considering the reality that purchasing such a house will yield basically no return on investment because you won't be able to sell it later. That's not to say it doesn't have advantages over conventional home ownership, but in terms of the finances and return on investment, it's best to think of it as an alternative to renting instead of to buying a house.

Living in such a tiny space can wear on you after a while, especially in a relationship (even the best relationships benefit from a little physical space from time to time), and if you ever want kids, you'll basically have to rebuild the entire thing (to say nothing of the fact that they'll need more space and privacy as they grow). It's doable, but make sure you go into it with a long-term plan that considers how the finances play out relative to your other options, bearing in mind that any money you spent on your tiny house is probably going to be gone forever.

Accountability goes further than throwing money at mistakes, it includes facing criminal charges for the commission of crimes and the removal of cops that shouldn't be cops from positions of power.

Quite simply, every single time a cop fires their gun (or exercises any other form of violence), they should ask themselves if it's truly justifiable to do so, and proceed only if they're sure. For that matter, so should everyone else. That is the basic responsibility of anyone that is taking the life of another person into their hands like that, and anyone who doesn't accept that responsibility should not be allowed to have that power.

Yep. Presuming the rest of the series is anything like 1 (which I understand is the case), the real meat of the game is in the postgame grinding to absurd levels. IIRC, the final boss of 1 was level 85, which was reasonable for how much you'd level just going through the story, but then there was at least one superboss that was 6000 or 8000 (and you wouldn't stand a chance without a buttload of reincarnations and some Item World-boosted gear, so it wasn't even just the levels). The fact that the announcement trailer for 6 made specific mention of the fact that damage could go into the quadrillions really kind of reflects the series focus on gratuitously large numbers.

Basically a free 6-day rental. Dunno how many people are out there that are interested in this that don't already own the game, given that it's five years old, but I figure it can't hurt to get the word out.

A word of caution: Tiny homes tend not to hold their value well at all, which will likely be an issue in the future. There are plenty of stories out there of families that thought building a tiny home was a great idea and invested a sizable amount of money into doing so (less than a full home, obviously, but still not a trivial amount), only to later decide that they'd outgrown it (whether because of kids or just because they wanted something bigger) and wanted to upgrade, but basically having to start from scratch because their tiny home was worth next to nothing. In some ways, that's no different from renting, so they can be considered a viable alternative to that, but don't go into it thinking that it's a step toward owning a proper home.

Last I heard, they'd issued voluntary evacuation notices for people living along some of Nova Scotia's coastal regions. Some of those areas are expecting 8-10 metre waves (~26-32 feet).

Sure, but the vast majority of masked sneezes I've experienced haven't been particularly juicy (they're either caused by the sun, or by the fact that the nerves in my mouth have been screwed up since my jaw surgery and I can sometimes make myself sneeze if my tongue hits the wrong part of the roof of my mouth), so it's not a big deal. I still sneeze into my elbow even with the mask on.

So.... you're suggesting that we privatize police so taxpayers don't foot the bill?

Nah, that'd just turn into what would effectively be rich people hiring mercenary armies to invade poorer neighbourhoods. The issue there is that taxpayers pay the full price of whatever mistakes the cops made, rather than cops being held properly accountable to incentivize making fewer mistakes in the future.

Zeus_LLC posted...
in so many of these cases, involve s*** we shouldn't have cops doing in the first place. No-knock raids are a f***ing terrible policy that frequently results in unnecessary injury or death

This is also very true. I don't know who thought no-knock warrants were a good idea, but I have to admire the flexibility needed to shove their head far enough up their own ass to make such a decision.

Cops screw up, somebody dies, taxpayers pay the bill, cops continue screwing up without learning any sort of lessons. What a great cycle that definitely doesn't need reform in any way.

Overlooking that "Actual people" claim is a disingenuous claim, I'm citing SPECIFIC acts of violence that people (usually not you, although you're kinda doing it now) have handwaved.

Actual people: "Yeah violence is bad they shouldn't be doing that. Can we focus on the actual issue motivating the protests now?"
Zeus: "Look at these guys defending specific acts of violence!"

We're currently getting the start of the rain from Teddy. It currently looks like Cape Breton (the island that makes up the northern ~1/4 of the province) will be taking the brunt of it, but we're still expecting potentially 100+ mm of rain here in Halifax, and some pretty sizable winds. We've had worse (Dorian arrived as an actual hurricane last year and made a mess of things), but this should still be a fun time.

rare is the most successful they've ever been and have complete autonomy

sounds like microsoft buying them was a great thing for them on the whole

For them, sure, but he was pretty clearly talking about the consumer side of things. Given that Rare's produced like two games that the core gamer market would consider decent since the purchase 17 years ago (one of which was just a compilation of their pre-purchase titles), I'd say that assessment was accurate enough. New Rare may be doing better for itself than Old Rare did, but the reasons people liked Old Rare did not survive Microsoft buying the studio.

Now, the primary reason for Rare's massive drop in quality was that a sizable chunk of their development staff - many of whom were responsible for some of their best titles - left the studio after Microsoft bought them, largely due to irreconcilable differences with the pro-sale folks. That wasn't actually Microsoft ruining them so much as it was them ruining themselves over being bought by Microsoft, such that treating them as a harbinger of doom for any other studio Microsoft buys isn't altogether reasonable.

lets actually break this down

if he is hiring a good personal chef for even 1 meal a day you can count on him dropping 2.5k per month on it (more likely he gets lunch and breakfast too. that number is likely closer to 3.5k or 4k, but im being conservative)

entertaining ladies? throwing dinner parties? shit is expensive, and im willing to guess that mr renner probably does so at least once a month, and i would guess that he spends at least 1000 on the affair

leaving him with about 2k per month, or about $500 per week for food and "other household supplies"

personally i would speculate that a good chunk of that $500 is probably going toward recreational substances. booze, marijuana, coke, who knows what mr renner gets into.

One high priced bottle of scotch per week could easily knock $100 off of that total, bringing us to 400 per week.

I could easily spend that amount on groceries in a given week if i thought the money was never going to stop rolling
in.

dont get me wrong, if you make that kind of money you should be setting yourself to be able to retire at the drop of a hat. if he were actually broke, then he is a fucking idiot, but then so is most of hollywood.

It's conceivable, but still seems positively absurd, especially where $1000 dinner parties aren't exactly commonplace in an era where having outsiders in your home is legally prohibited. The exact wording was also "for groceries," which I wouldn't think would include a chef's salary, but I know better than to put that much weight in Duckbear's word choices. It seems we agree on "what a moron," so let's leave it at that.

When you can afford things, you tend to fall into a lot of things most people consider luxuries and it's worth noting that some things we consider luxuries are actually important for helping an entertainer's career. In this case, an actor's public image and public profile can help them secure jobs.

Sure, I get that he'd have a whole lot more dry cleaning than most people, but an entire wardrobe, such that you always have to pay dry cleaning prices no matter what you're wearing? Actors can maintain their public image just fine with clothes that can go in a regular washing machine.

Alimony is never reasonable. It should not exist.

Eh, I can see some defense for it. In many ways, it's a relic of a time when most households were single-income: By the nature of that relationship, the non-working spouse becomes completely financially dependent on the other, and alimony ensures that divorce won't completely screw them over. With double-income households being more common these days, that's less of a concern, but there's still generally going to be enough of a difference in income that a divorce is going to introduce financial hardship for one party, and it's generally bad for people to be stuck in bad marriages because of that.

Now, does it need work? Absolutely. The extreme differences in income that you see in any trophy spouse situation should not result in similarly extreme alimony. There should be reasonable caps on it based on reasonable estimates of costs of living, rather than basing it on maintaining their current lifestyle. It should also probably have a time limit imposed on it (3-5 years is plenty of time to become independent), as well as adjusting it according to any changes in income level (whether due to employment or finding a new person to depend on). It also really needs to stop favouring women so much (again, that's a relic of the "man=breadwinner" dynamic of yore and has no place in today's world), though that's a broader cultural issue. Despite the numerous issues, though, I think the fundamental concept is sound.

That said, a lot of the issues alimony aims to solve can be solved with pre-nups instead, generally more amicably and efficiently than trying to sort out something "fair" in courts. Rather than trying to fix all the problems alimony has, it'd probably be more reasonable to promote a cultural shift to have pre-nups become normal (and possibly to revisit the agreements every few years to update them as needed to account for changes in the relationship dynamic), so that more couples are comfortable discussing them.

Wake me up when Gamepass actually come to Switch

I doubt that'll happen. As a service, Gamepass is meant to be an incentive for people to choose a system. It's on Xbox to make Xbox more attractive, and it's on PC's to make Windows 10 more attractive (less necessary now that prior versions of Windows are no longer supported), but Microsoft really doesn't benefit from making the Switch more attractive. Most of Microsoft's support of Nintendo has boiled down to making life harder for Sony, rather than helping Nintendo compete with the Xbox. Gamepass on Switch would generally fall more into the latter camp than the former.
