DragonForce - Reaching Into Infinity

Thanks to a new lead singer, I think DragonForce have gotten way better since the time when they were mostly known for "that one super hard song in Guitar Hero" and were treated like a meme rather than a band. I think this album is their best example of how much they've improved.

By any chance was Tomoyo "Madison" in the original dub? One of the few things I remembered from "Cardcaptors" was a dark haired character named Madison who skated around and had a video camera. Now I realize I must have combined her with Sakura in my memory. Did they keep the name Sakura at least?

Sakura was still Sakura in both dubs (though the original dub changed her family/last name to be less Japanese-y) and Tomoyo was indeed changed to Madison in the original dub. Also, Sakura was the one that skated around (not Tomoyo) but Tomoyo was the one who always had a camera and filmed Sakura. So you did kind of sort of combine them in your old memories by accident.

Yep, it was a mess. Nelvana wanted to market the show (and the cards as real-life merch) more to boys to try and catch the same spark that Pokemon did, so they heavily edited the show to downplay Sakura and make Syaoran (who they renamed by making Li his first name rather than his last) seem more like the main character. Because god forbid a show with a female main character try to market to anything but little girls...

You forgot a digit. Cardcaptors ran for 39 episodes while the actual Cardcaptor Sakura was 70, so they removed 31 episodes worth of content.

It's nothing amazing so far, but fairly charming and entertaining. Only about 6 episodes in. 70 episodes seems a bit long for this, I'm guessing it eventually moves away from just "clow card(s) of the week"?

It does have an overarching plot, but there's quite a bit of slice-of-life and "card of the week" in it too. In this case though, some of those episodes are among the most fun in the series. Plus, there's the fun of seeing all of the different outfits that Tomoyo puts her in throughout the series.

The original "Cardcaptors" dub from the 90's was done by Nelvana and Ocean Productions, and that's the dub that was chopped up and censored into an unrecognizable mess. The second English dub was done by Animax Asia for airing in the SEA region, and was uncut and uncensored with no name or localization changes. This second dub was later licensed for an official US release by NIS America (the only Animax dub to ever get a western release) and this dub is the one that Netflix has now. The original dub is dead, buried, and will never be seen again, as it should be.

If the original CCS were ever going to get a modern re-dub by an American studio, it would almost certainly be done by Funimation (who licensed and dubbed the CCS: Clear Card sequel series) and not by Netflix. However, considering that Funimation also added the original CCS to their library recently but chose to simply upload the Animax dub, the chances of them going back and re-dubbing it now are slim to none.

The only thing you might miss out on with VRV + Funimation is the odd Viz dub (those tend to pop up on Hulu or be exclusive to disc releases).

Viz dubs sometimes pop up on Toonami as well (like the JoJo dubs) before they end up on Hulu or Netflix for streaming later on.

Speaking of Netflix, they do get the occasional exclusive series (like Little Witch Adaemia) that's worth watching. But those are rare.

VRV combines the libraries of Crunchyroll and HiDive together (plus other miscellaneous non-anime content) into one service for a price cheaper than the two separately, so it's the best one for sheer variety of anime series for the best price. Funimation is generally considered the best specifically in regards to English dubbed anime. They have the most dubbed series and their simuldubs (when the coronavirus isn't throwing a wrench into things) are generally the fastest every season, only 2-3 episodes behind the subbed broadcasts for the same shows. If you can afford two sites, then VRV + Funimation gives you absolutely massive coverage because there's very little overlap between the shows on Funimation and the shows on Crunchyroll or HiDive, and what little overlap they have usually boils down to Funimation having the dub of a show while Crunchyroll has the sub.

I'm going to second HG/SS, the gen 5 games, and Explorers of Sky (Explorers of Time/Darkness are also great, but not as great as Sky)

For the gen 5 games, make sure to play the sequel (Black 2 or White 2) that's the same color as the one you played in the first pair, so that way you can catch all three of the cover legends and enough copies of Kyurem to have both of its new forms in B2/W2.

I just cleared stage 15 for the first time with a team of Sigurd, Shion, Sarah, and Angela. I got Sigurd this Dauntless Charge skill where he charges into battle before turn 1 and stuns a few enemies, and Angela fires 2 laser shots (1 from her weapon, 1 from a skill I got her) before turn 1 and basically decimates any enemy that starts the battle in the same row as her. It's not as broken as what @legendarylemur got earlier (how far did you end up going with that team btw?) but I think I've got myself a good setup this run. EDIT: And then I immediately get gangbanged in stage 16 by a dozen Fuma shadow clones and lose. Because of course.

So I've heard ppl on fb groups and subreddit for Battle Divas that they just play Infinite War all day and get a bunch of sets and forbidden weapons for characters. I think that's actually the best way to use your gems right now. Alright, gonna stop gushing about the game now.

I might start trying to do that too now that I've kind of hit the wall in terms of story/event progress. I've only played Infinite War through the free chances we've been given so far and the farthest I've made it was stage 14.

which is really sad considering gen 6 onwards is also unplayable

I'd still consider Emerald (mostly for the Battle Frontier) and OR/AS (for having a lot of the best additions that X/Y brought without many of the other flaws that X/Y had) to be good enough to still be playable/enjoyable today. But yeah, gen 4-5 was the golden age of Pokemon games IMO.

It's pretty common knowledge NFL teams are extremely wary of any player that is labeled as a "circus". They are weirdly protective of keeping their "locker rooms" free of controversy.

Right, because doing things like driving drunk, beating your wife and/or children, and running a literal dogfighting ring aren't bad enough to be labeled as a "circus" and keep someone out of the league, yet kneeling during a song as a non-violent protest somehow is.

Three years after NFL team owners closed the doors of their franchises to Colin Kaepernick, the leagues former head of communications who was often in the center of the storm has asserted what many have long suspected: A kneeling Kaepernick was bounced from the NFL in 2017 because he was bad for business.

Thats one of the massive takeaways from the column written by CNN political analyst Joe Lockhart, who was the NFLs vice president of communications when Kaepernick ignited a social justice movement that rippled through teams and shook the leagues ownership ranks.

In Lockharts own words from a column from early Saturday morning: No teams wanted to sign a player even one as talented as Kaepernick whom they saw as controversial, and, therefore, bad for business.

That line bears repeating once, twice or a thousand times because it forever puts a spate of intellectually dishonest and long-running canards to bed. So lets stop and shout this for a moment, so everyone in the back can hear it:

Colin Kaepernick was not bounced by NFL team owners because of his skill. He was not bounced because of salary demands. And he was not bounced because he wanted a starting job. No, he was rejected by NFL team owners because he became a financial liability, kneeling for social justice and igniting a telling firestorm with President Donald Trump.

We can finally all be honest about that now. Colin Kaepernick lost his job forever because he became a wildly uncomfortable inflection point between franchise owners and players. He lost his job because he wouldnt turn down the volume on his anger or rhetoric. And he lost his job because a segment of fans were furious about all of it, refused to listen to any of it, and never bothered to understand where it might be coming from.

Now a multitude of cities are burning at night following the death of George Floyd in custody of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. And what were seeing each day is a level of discord, exhaustion and outright defiance that comes from the very marrow of Kaepernicks message. A message that might have been worth preserving in the league or at least tolerating if only for the fact that it was a window into a brand of pressure and dehumanization that has been building for years, if not decades or lifetimes.

That opportunity for the NFL was lost, arguably creating an even bigger platform for Kaepernick in the process. A platform that will only grow in these coming weeks, as Floyds fruitless pleas for his life echo in the publics ear, leading a few people (and maybe many) to look back on the why behind Kaepernicks kneeling. A why that was lied about, grossly distorted or simply used to fuel a political machine that is now falling into catastrophic failure as we near one of the most explosive elections in American history.

An election that will happen during another NFL season without Kaepernick, whose career has been buried to the point of no return.

It's a magical girl isekai spin-off (wtf) of the long-running Cardfight Vanguard franchise, and the first episode aired today after being delayed by over a month due to the pandemic. I've never watched a second of CFVG before (my experience with card game anime is just Yu-Gi-Oh and WIXOSS) and I only started watching this for the magical girls and the idea of mixing card game anime and magical girl anime together. The comedy was an unexpected surprise though, because I thought the first episode was hilarious.
