*Designs Sharpedo as an ultimate glass cannon with 40 def and special def and 70 health, basically getting OHKO'd by anything*

*Gives it 120 physical attack, despite having no physical STAB*

Game design!

Not as bad as Sneasel. Give it a high attack, but both its types are Special and it has a piss-poor Sp. Attack stat.

And this is why they started splitting moves into physical/special based on the moves themselves (and not their types) starting with gen 4

Gen 4 was boring trash in many regards.

But the physical/special split was the smartest thing they did.

Sure.

But Sharpedo was designed for a game where that wasn't the case, in a franchise where it had never been the case.

It's also horribly balanced. I'm sure it's difficult to balance a game that has so many angles but it's like... what's even the point of some of these Pokemon's existence? I'm not talking Pokemon that can be placed on lower tiers and do some interesting stuff there. Like a good 40% of the Pokemon base is just flat out worthless even in their tiers\

But also I thought the topic was gonna be about making such a low tier effort lacking game with all their money

I'd still consider Emerald (mostly for the Battle Frontier) and OR/AS (for having a lot of the best additions that X/Y brought without many of the other flaws that X/Y had) to be good enough to still be playable/enjoyable today. But yeah, gen 4-5 was the golden age of Pokemon games IMO.

The game design is fine. I think you just focus mainly on the combat.

Some people raise Poke'mon in game because they like putting together a crew or having a cute buddy that is good at doing a specific task (poison or sleep an opponent).

If the game's combat was perfectly balanced, the game would not feel dynamic, it would be very predictable. Having strong Poke'mon and weak Poke'mon allows for more diverse battles and scenarios.

For example a fast Jigglypuff could perform Sing, it would land and sleep the enemy before the stronger enemy has a chance to damage and faint Jigglypuff.

Gyarados has a flying physical stab (its shitty flying movepool not withstanding) in the early gens and both it and Feraligatr have some decent bulk and decent damage even without stab. Sharpedo is designed to be a glass cannon but they took out the cannon part by not designing with physical and special move limitations in mind.

It didn't have a single flying type move lol although in Gen 1 its special was pretty good anyway. Sharpedo's special attack wasn't that bad either. There's also Gengar who somehow made do solely through its amazing typing.

Gyarados' Flying movepool pre-Gen 4 was more than shitty; it outright didn't exist.

The closest to that that it gets is Bounce. Starting with Platinum, it gets Bounce via Magikarp and Move Tutors.

I dunno, in my case I hadn't played and beat a Pokemon game since the first 2 gens, and I recently bought Ultra Sun to give the series another try. And the jump for me is pretty crazy. Especially since I was replaying Crystal after many years of not playing a main series Pokemon game.

Plus, I don't care about the competitive side. So while the game seems very text heavy so far, I'm kinda enjoying it.

doesn't the Pokemon Company host events every year where you can win money from winning a Pokemon tournament? How isn't the game designed for that kind of stuff if they're making tournaments out of it?
