| MrMallard 01/14/20 5:56:35 AM #11 | Oh god, The Meg was shit. Shit acting, shit effects, shit story. It was basically just a Syfy turd dolled up to a 100 million+ budget and cooked in a server farm in China, the same way The Great Wall was. Chucky 2019 was a decent standalone romp. The original canon still exists with that upcoming TV show, and the concept was a neat spin. That movie had potential to be a massive pile of dogshit, but it was a decent enough watch. The only major downside I had was casting Aubrey Plaza as a single mother, because she still looks so young. Not even the handwave explanation was that satisfying. Otherwise, a fine enough popcorn muncher. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |
| Topic | Joe Rogan: What Do You Do About Old Racist Media? |
| MrMallard 01/14/20 12:30:07 AM #18 | Why did they have to pick Song of the South for the thumbnail, though? There are plenty of wartime cartoons like Looney Tunes that featured extreme racism, and with those you can look at the circumstances around them to add meaning to them. They're absolutely fucking horrible, but they exist within a valid historical context that's worth talking about. Song of the South is Disney basically depicting black people as being happy with slavery, laughing and being jolly at their lot in life, while their stories are repackaged for a white crowd with a noticeable lilt of ebonics in the voiceover. I just mentioned Looney Tunes and how their wartime cartoons had additional meaning through the circumstances of their creation that made them worth discussing, but one cartoon that didn't have to exist was an Elmer Fudd/Bugs Bunny cartoon where Elmer Fudd was replaced with an extremely racist depiction of a black man. He drawled like he had 50 IQ points or lower, he had a massive forehead, his lips were massive. The only humor this character offered was "look at how stupid black people are! What a slow buffoon!" - and it's disgusting. You might have people defending something racist if it's funny, but this character drags the cartoon to a standstill - his antics, whether he was black or white, slowed the cartoon down to a fucking crawl. The only selling point was to have a grossly stereotyped black person, and it's a shitty cartoon because of it. Song of the South is trash at best. It paves over the injustices that black people suffered by depicting a jolly, smiling black man who serves as a guilt-free depiction of happiness in servitude. After all, that's his standing in life, right? Might as well be jolly about it. There's no greater context except "white people wanted to enjoy black folklore without acknowledging slavery or racism, so they created a black figure who was okay with it to feel better". It's wrong, and there's no circumstances that make it worth talking about except as a product of racism. Just like that trash cartoon that took a perfectly serviceable Elmer Fudd story and replaced it with severe racism. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

| MrMallard 01/13/20 10:21:11 PM #18 | MGSV has some of the best gameplay in the series, but it has the worst story hands down. With the tired twist, declining cutscene quality as the game goes on, Huey as a whole and Boring Ocelot? It's a really bad Metal Gear game, and while I disagree with the assertion that it's a trash game that isn't worth playing, I understand why some fans are butthurt by it. I got the PS3 version on launch day for $90 AUD, and I didn't feel like I got a raw deal. I logged about 150 hours into it before my last PS3 shit itself and lost my save. Personally I really enjoyed it as a game, but I didn't like the story at all and it was a disappointing endnote to the Metal Gear series. Also, Konami fucked up the in-game currency with patches - they moved like 80% of your resources online, including anything you made before the patch rolled out. I found this out by booting up my game in offline mode, and instantly being plunged into the red with no resources to use. I lost like 5 soldiers who up and quit due to lack of resources, because Konami fucked up my currency. And the worst part is that when you spent your currency, it would burn through your offline stash first before digging into your online stash. Eventually you could only spend your online GMP on online items, and your offline GMP would go into the negatives instead of spending the online GMP. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

Well, this story was tonal whiplash. I only learned about the protest a few hours ago. According to the linked article, Wilson Gavin also spoke on behalf of the Australian Monarchists Party. I think his politics were abhorrent, and yesterday's actions were total shit. But I don't think he deserved to die, and I feel extremely bad for his family. Having to bury a family member like that is fucking awful - especially someone who's this young. Surprising, but heartening, is the fact that the group he slandered yesterday extended their well-wishes to the family of the man. I think it rings true that even with a garbage streak to his behavior, this death is senseless and traumatic to his family and they deserve whatever support they can get right now. In the wake of his death, I can't help but wonder if yesterday's actions were a cry for help - an extreme action taken by a person with nothing left to lose. But I can't comment on the circumstances with any sort of objectivity, and even on my best day I would never have been able to affect this outcome through the sheer force of the distance between us. | Topic | Another question about Pokemon SwSh DLC... |
| MrMallard 01/12/20 10:31:37 AM #1 | When the DLC got announced people got all shitty about the returning Pokemon being locked behind a paywall, before other people clarified that the Pokemon would be added in a free update separate from the DLC. This claim was eventually countered with the assertion that the 200 returning Pokemon would be confined strictly to the DLC areas, and only made available via trading between DLC and vanilla versions of the game. Did the Nintendo Direct ever state that the returning Pokemon would be tied to the DLC? Because while rebalancing the entire game to include the new Pokemon isn't feasible, SwSh could just as easily add the new Pokemon to the Wild Area and rebalance the spawns there. The different weather patterns spawn different Pokemon related to those weather patterns, and while those weather patterns have a decent crop of Pokemon dedicated to them per area, there's nothing saying that the Wild Area spawns have to stay consistent or that there isn't fat to be trimmed in regards to overlapping spawns. Game Freak could write it off as a "biome shift" or something that attracts new Pokemon. If the Direct stated that the new areas are the exclusive home to returning Pokemon, that's one thing. It's a whole other thing entirely to assume the returning Pokemon won't be coming to the vanilla release due to spawn rates. The devs won't go out of their way to retcon the returning Pokemon into the wider Galar region, but without 100% confirmation it seems stupid to write off the Wild Area as a potential home for the returning Pokemon. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

But as an adult, I think it becomes pretty clear to most people who is and isn't deserving of respect. You're bound to get some jackasses with an inflated sense of self worth, and it's clear that even if they have a position of power above you, they don't deserve your respect. | MrMallard 01/11/20 7:39:14 AM #1 | So in Borderlands 3, I guess I can understand if Maya stays dead after getting blown up - happened too fast, machine didn't kick in, whatever. But in Borderlands 2, Roland gets a bullet in the back and dies like a dog. Why can't he just respawn at a New-U Station? Like, I get that Borderlands isn't that deep and shit happens if shit happens. We're not talking about a franchise known for its moral complexity or close adherence to canon - Borderlands is a balls-to-the-wall franchise that does things because it's funny. Still, though. It could be argued that since they're the Resistance, they've been expunged from the New-U Station. But the Vault Hunters in Borderlands 2 are a part of that resistance too, and as main characters you can respawn despite being an enemy of Hyperion. I guess it's just "you're the player character so you respawn, they're NPCs now so they die". Still, though. As far as I'm concerned, GameFAQs and Tumblr are as close to the old internet as you're gonna see going forward. | MrMallard 01/09/20 11:15:49 PM #69 | People who see her perform say that she's keeping up a full head of steam for solid hour and a half shows. Dancing, playing instruments and singing the whole time. While being overweight might have its health effects, there are perfectly healthy people who carry more weight than what we count as the norm. If Lizzo's quality of performance was suffering due to her weight, that would be one thing. But she isn't slipping. That's the thing - you'll get washed up celebrities who've packed on a bunch of weight and don't perform as well as they used to, but Lizzo is keeping up with that sort of personality at their prime. She's a heavy-set woman who isn't mired in obesity and bad living - she's athletic enough to be an active stage presence, and for her weight not to slow her down. All signs are pointing towards her actually being pretty athletic and healthy for her weight. The current Lizzo discourse feels like it falls into the same trap as the faux-concern trolls tend to exhibit for fat people as a way to mock and bully them. People think they get a free pass to talk shit on a fat person because they're just trying to motivate them to be healthier, to be a better role model. But Lizzo has shown herself to be an active showman, and have stamina beyond what just about any keyboard warrior criticizing her would have. Sometimes fat people are healthy at the weight they're at - they have frames that can support that weight, they're actually quite strong beyond what critics see as blubber. So this criticism that Lizzo is an obese landwhale who needs to lose some weight instead of promoting her evil lifestyle or whatever? It's small dick energy. It's focusing in on one visible aspect of this artist, and riding it under the guise of well-intentioned concern. But of course critics of Lizzo are going to go that route, because her music is ultimately about uplifting people and feeling good while you do it. Of course the backlash against songs about feeling good at the club and partying it up to make the people around you feel good too is going to be met with shame and derision for an external factor of the artist. Can't be fun and positive if the artist is promoting some sort of deviant lifestyle. People who actually like and listen to Lizzo respond with what they've seen at her concerts, that she's an active, athletic showman for hour and a half shows. Detractors harp on her weight and call her a bad influence on society, like they do with every remotely fat person they can sink their hooks into. If Lizzo can carry her weight and still lead an active, empowering career, then that should be good enough. Zaltera posted... She appears to be not just obese but morbidly obese.Motherfucker, do you know what morbidly obese even means? | Topic | Pokemon Gen 8 DLC has $30 DLC |
| MrMallard 01/09/20 10:28:09 AM #18 | Not a big fan. I didn't think I would miss the endgame content, but I kind of did for the first time in a Pokemon game. I trained a second team up to level 50, but it didn't feel balanced at all the second time through. I had a brief period where I got into EV stuff, but eventually I just dropped the game like a sack of shit. If the DLC goes over well, I'll consider getting it. Otherwise I'm fine for the time being. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |
